Guest fountainhall Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I guess this puts me in the 'spoilsport' category, but the Brahms Requiem without a large Brahms-style orchestra is surely something of a damp squib. OK, I'm waiting for the brickbats Quote
dapitt Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 OK, I'm waiting for the brickbats Consider one thrown! I would think one would revel in the opportunity as presented, rather than muse "well, if only they had....." Tsk, tsk..... Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Brickbat accepted! But the Requiem is a very complex, often symphonic piece with all sorts of subtleties in the orchestration that are all but completely lost in the 2-piano version. This was primarily arranged for places with excellent choirs but no symphony orchestra. Bangkok has 3 good symphony orchestras now. It's a little bit like presenting Wagner's Ring cycle with piano accompaniment - and even the Bangkok Opera uses a large orchestra for its cycle. Quote
dapitt Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 But the Requiem is a very complex...... I understand the point. I am a professional musician -- a conductor. My point remains: It might be nice to just accept opportunities as they are presented, for the intrinsic value of each. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I second that. Best to just appreciate it for what it is and not compare. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I defer to the voice of experience and the points made on this thread. I wish all who attend a most enjoyable and stimulating performance. Quote
