TotallyOz Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I am looking for a good travel agent near the Sathorn or Silom area of Bangkok. Anyone know of any good and reliable agents? Quote

Guest Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I am curious why you would need a travel agency. I haven't used one since I started using the internet. Am I missing something? I like walking in an having the option to take one airline to one place and return on another. The local agents also know of all the deals on the last minute fares, etc. The prices at these Thailand travel agents are always reasonable and they do the work quick. Also, since you use the Internet on this, is there a good website that deals with Thai flights that is similar to Expedia? Quote
Bob Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I'm a bit puzzled too - I don't use travel agents anymore since it's just as easy (and cheaper) to use the internet. I'm not aware of any "bargains" available using the various airlines within Thailand so I'm not sure that any "expedia" type website would help anyway. For their promotions, go to the airlines' websites and/or get on their mailing lists. I get Air Asia email promotions at least once a month (and, of course, I'm never able to use the deals offerred). Guest fountainhall Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Anyone know of any good and reliable agents? In Thailand, isn't that an oxymoron? Seriously, in my admittedly limited experience with travel agents here, I have invariably found that it is I who end up giving them the information I have picked up on the web about the best deals! Since I travel a lot to Hong Kong and wanted a cheaper business class ticket, some years ago my travel agent came up with the usual airlines. I checked around and discovered that Finnair had 3 flights a week to HKG with business class at roughly the same price as economy on Cathay or Thai. So I took Finnair for 3 years before it discontinued the service. I felt like seeking commission from the agent who must have booked a lot of her clients on to those flight. Same with round the world fares. I have yet to find an agent who actually knows all the rules and regulations; yet, these are perfectly clear if you just read the relevant websites. More pertinently, I have found that most agents are only interested in return tickets, not one ways. Besides, agents here rarely get cheap one-way tickets into the country since these are usually available only from the issuing country. So like other posters, I use the web for almost all my travel in Asia. My last thought is - if you want to have an 'open jaw' ticket (out to one destination and back from another), you could still do a round trip with a middle sector linking those 2 destinations. However, if you don't turn up for that middle sector, the computer dumps the rest of your booking and you are screwed when you turn up at the airport to return to Bangkok. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I just find out what airlines fly to the place I want to go and use their online booking to check for the best price. Quote

Guest thaiworthy Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I agree with the majority. The best deals are the ones I find myself. It takes some effort online to find those good deals, and I doubt the travel agent is going to put that much effort into it. And I like booking the fares myself. Also, if flight is cancelled or something changes, I get an email from the airline and I can negotiate a better routing/times and I am soon back on track. Try doing that with a travel agent. If you use them, and something happens, you can't deal with the airline, the travel agent has to fix it. And if you think you're going to get an email from a travel agent when that happens, lotsa luck! Quote

Guest Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I have a few short trips to take and the time frames from taking one carrier round-trip has not been good. The Thai airlines seem to be asleep when I want to travel as I love early AM flights. When I travel Internationally I use NWA (now Delta) but I think I'll be looking for a change there too. Quote
Guest frodo Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I highly recommend http://www.naga.co.th Very professional and courteous. All info on their website. Quote
Guest jtrack33 Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I have recently been using Etihad to Europe as they have respectable departure/transit/arrival times. The planes are newish and good enough legroom, food and service. They have a new terminal for stop-over in Abu Dhabi and give you Silver membership after just 2 trips to Europe. The Silver card gives you access to all there lounges when you travel economy class(except somewhere in Germany I believe). I was checking their current on-line prices to Europe and they are less than Bht29,000 round trip with all taxes and fees included...and effective from now until March 2010. I am not sure, but I believe this is good...a lot less than I paid a few months back. Quote
