Baan Khanitha Restaurant in Bangkok

I had some friends who wanted to try a good Thai place in Bangkok. Our hotel recommended the Baan Khanitha on Sathorn Road. It is right at the corner of Sathorn Soi 3 and across from Soi Convent. If you are at Babylon for the day, it is a very easy 10-15 min walk. If you are at Silom 4, it is an easy 10 min walk right down Soi Convent and across the street.

 

The food is Thai and the place is decorated very well. It had a great ambiance and a very quite laid back feel to a fancy place. The waiters were all speaking perfect English. The decorations were beautiful to look at and fresh flowers on every table.

 

They had a wide variety of Thai food. We tried the Shrimp Fried Rice in a Pineapple, a few other spicy foods for the Thai guys and we had a sample seafood platter. All tasted good and everything was enjoyable. It had nice spices and not too spicy for me (except the dishes they told us in advance were spicy). The price was a bit on the heavy side at about 700 baht a head and we had no liquor. It is a nice place to have a special experience or show someone around LOS who has not been here before.

 

All in all a very nice experience!

I've eaten there quite a few times and agree totally with GT's comments. The location is the corner of Sathorn and Suan Plu (the soi where the Immigration office is sited).

I will add it to my list as a place to dine, but I would like to know more about the gallery part. What are the paintings on the wall? Do they change(local artist hoping to sell),or do they always stay the same?

I am not sure if they change or not. I am sure if they sell they do. My BF did comment that the artwork in the room we ate in was more Indian Buddhism. But, they have many rooms and many places to see.

We had 4 different plates of food with a Seafood sampler, Watermelon Shake, water and a beer. It turned out for us to be 700 baht each (they included service change of 10 percent in the total). But, we are not big drinkers and did not order all the special seafood dishes (many of which were 900-1200 each), only the one which came with lobster, shrimp, calamari, etc. That was called the Seafood sampler and we ordered a half portion as we had other regular Thai dishes. For what it was, you are right, it was not cheap but I thought a decent price for a great experience. I rarely feel comfortable eating seafood in Thailand as I have a very weak stomach. I did not worry there and ate tons of it. We even had leftovers.

 

I could see if I was with someone like me who like to experiment and order some of the Chef's specials that are mostly fish and seafood that our meal would have been MUCH more. I did notice they had a great selection of wine and they were not cheap either. The table next to us ordered 4 bottles. I am sure they had a nice tab too.

 

The setting takes you out of Bangkok and puts you into a garden like feeling. I enjoyed it and while more expensive that I like to eat, I think it is great for special occasions.

I have mostly eaten there a deux ordering usual Thai fare and have never paid anything like that. I agree you can eat more cheaply elsewhere, but I think kjun12 must have ordered some pretty expensive dishes.

 

The Blue Elephant

 

For those who want a supreme dining experience in lovely elegant surroundings, perhaps for a special occasion, you won't do better than The Blue Elephant further down Sathorn and right at Surasak Skytrain station. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a lovingly restored old Thai house. The second floor is the bar area, and the third accommodates a cooking school. Dinner for 2 here would probably come to between Bt. 3,000 and 4,500 with drinks.

 

The dishes are Thai with a hint of fusion. They also have wonderfully creative desserts. So successful is the restaurant that there are now branches in places like London, Paris, Moscow and other capital cities.

 

Interestingly, they also do a limited range of frozen meals for one - a succulent Butter Chicken in a light curry sauce, etc. - which used to be available at the major supermarkets. These sell for around Bt.145 but for some reason, I have not been able to find them over the last few weeks. Probably just lousy ordering by the supermarkets - remember the time when you could not buy tonic water anywhere for months!
