TotallyOz Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 If the economy sucks, you can't tell it at Siam Paragon. I went to Bangkok yesterday with the BF as we had to go to Probike to buy some bike shorts, gloves, helmets, etc. We then went to Siam Paragon to see The Transformers and I wanted to see it on the IMax screen. We got there 4 hours early and the movie was already sold out. We got tickets for the regular movie theatre as opposed to the IMAX. It was sold out as well but we found 3 seats available. This was a 5 PM showing. It was I think the largest capacity theatre I have seen anywhere and tickets were 220 baht each. There was not one seat left. We had tickets in the balcony which required us to take a elevator up once inside the theatre. The place was gianormous. The movies were packed going in and coming out. It was like wading through a sea of sardines. The food court was also packed and seats full to capacity. All the activity was 90 percent Thai. It seems that the economy is tough but there are still many that have money to spend. Quote
Guest Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Looking at wiki for this, the screen I saw is the largest screen in Asia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siam_Paragon Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I was at that Food Court last month. Nearby is Siam Ocean World, the largest aquarium in SE Asia. Here's a pic in the Food Court of Siam/Paragon. The guys with the mallets are making a cheap candy confection which costs 10 baht. It tastes like a Butterfingers without the chocolate. I'm pretty sure it was peanut-based. Quote

I can't think of a place with more variety and decent prices. Quote

While not as extensive as Paragon, the food court in the lower level of Central Festival is quite good, also the Food Loft on the third floor. Quote

Guest Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 History is repeating itself. Don't forget that during the Great Depression of the 1930's, the one industry which thrived was the movies! A very interesting perspective. That gives me a lot to think about. One of the things I have noticed in the adult internet industry is those that sell videos, etc have been hurting for business and some have been run out of business. Those that rent the same videos have been seeing noticeable increases. Take that over to your comments, I wonder if stock like Blockbusters and companies that have theatre venues will rise in value over those that are geared toward selling hard good? Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 At the iTunes store, new HD movies are offered for sale first, then rental later. (Unless you own Appletv) I guess if you're that hard up to see the movie without making a trip to the video store or waiting for Netflix, you'll have to buy it. You're paying Apple for the convenience. Personally, there are very few movies I'd want to own, HD or not. My collection is not more than a few dozen. BTW, an iTunes HD movie is only 720p, which means it has a full-frame resolution of 1280 x 720. By contrast, a blu-ray disk is 1080i, which means it has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. I'd rather watch blu-ray, but it may be some time before street vendors are selling pirated copies in that format Right now I am trying to find out if all blu-ray movies have Thai subtitles, even those that are sold in the states. If they are, I would be more apt to buy them. If not, I would be more apt to buy them in Thailand. Another reason to buy/rent blu-ray. Wake up, Apple! Quote
