Guest thrillbill Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I'd like to order some tank tops/ underwear from 10 Percent or International Male...does anyone know if things ordered through the internet websights arrive here in LOS through the local mailing system? --is there customs or anything of such? Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I have ordered a few things online. I didn't have to pay any duty on them, but the shipping costs are very high. I would only do it for things I really want and cannot get otherwise. Quote
Guest PattayaPlayers Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I'd suggest taking the catalog or the web picture of the clothing you want to purchase to a local tailor. In the end, it turns out to be far less expensive and often much better quality. Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I'd suggest taking the catalog or the web picture of the clothing you want to purchase to a local tailor. Now that's an excellent alternative and I agree with it. When it comes to clothing, unless you're not happy without the actual brand name displayed (especially all the free advertising Tommy Hilfiger gets) the local tailors and the street seamstress shops do an outstanding job of making whatever you want at a fraction of the cost. Other than the fact that the brand name label is not present, you can't tell the difference. If you are skeptical, you might try having just one item made locally. If you are satisfied with the result, now you can get all you want. Quote
Guest Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 What's the cost of this type of tailoring service? Back in Europe, I bought some nice lightweight walking trousers with zip off legs & the rare feature of zips on the pockets, which can be useful for security. Trouble is I can't find any more which meet this spec. So I'm thinking of either getting some made, or buying the closest matching product & getting it modified on the next trip to Thailand. Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 What's the cost of this type of tailoring service? I don't know about the price a tailor would charge, but the mom-and-pop seamstress shops usually charge between 300 to 400 baht per garment. Quote

With fabric I bought in Vietnam (nice cotton) I had shirts made for 200 baht each at a shop close to Tuk Com. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 If you are skeptical, you might try having just one item made locally Don't want to put a damper on this, but last year I took a business shirt made in Hong Kong to a tailor on Silom to be copied. I ordered 4 in different colours. You'd have thought there would be nothing simpler than copying a shirt millimeter by millimeter. But no! This outfit just could not get the collar and shoulders right with the result that, even after 3 fittings and several alterations, there was pronounced creasing along the shoulders. Each time, I pointed out where they had gone wrong - and they still could not get it right. I finally became so exasperated, I gave up and forfeited the small deposit. Best therefore to find a tailor that someone has already used and recommends. Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Best therefore to find a tailor that someone has already used and recommends. Many people have recommended Jim's in Pattaya. I don't recall the location, but maybe someone else knows where to find them. You can also ask Jim Lumsden at the Ambiance. I believe he knows. I've used a couple of the mom-and-pop shops and was very pleased with the results. The one I like best is on Third Road, shortly after the Central Road (Pattaya Klang) intersection heading in the direction of Pattaya Tai. I don't know how I could possibly describe where to find them, but if anyone wants to try them I'll be glad to take you there myself. Quote
Guest Geezer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 My experience has been the same as Fountainhall’s multiplied by eight (the number of tailors I have used). I have employed recommended tailors as well as random choices, all with poor to unacceptable results. I am not even much concerned about the fit, although I did object when the waists of the shorts presented were three inches too small. The tailor insisted I had gained three inches in the two weeks following the fitting. Simple things such as the placement and number of pockets are beyond their ability. I have three shorts with the fly zipper two inches too short. When using a urinal one must extend one's unit upward a couple of inches, then out through the opening, then aim it outward and down a bit, a feat for which one is not equipped. So far as I am concerned it would have been better if General Custer had wiped out all the Indians at the battle of the Little Big Horn. (If you’re not familiar with American history, don’t worry about it.) It would be wonderful to be able to use the sidewalks without having to walk around them while they are tugging at your arm. I have been told when an Indian woman is married the new husband takes a coin and scrapes off the crimson spot on her forehead to see if he has won a tailor shop in Pattaya. (By the way, to those who know me, I do have more than one outfit. It’s just that they’re all alike.) Quote

Is this allowed on this board? Besides the Indians (Native Americans) Custer fought were not ones (Indians from India) who have tailor the shops. Quote
Guest Geezer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Indians (Native Americans) Custer fought were not ones (Indians from India) who have tailor the shops. Of course not. That battle was a long time ago. They're all dead now. The ones blocking the sidewalks are their decedents. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Of course not. That battle was a long time ago, before the Civil War. They're all dead now. The ones blocking the sidewalks are their decedents. That is the most ignorant thing you could have said. Native Americans are not even the same race as Indians. The tailors are from India, not Native Americans. When you are making your racist comments you should, at least, know which group you talking about. Quote
Guest Geezer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 That is the most ignorant thing you could have said. Native Americans are not even the same race as Indians. I know that. I am a native American -- born in Chicago, reared in Chattanooga. Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 The fact is the only ones who wish to refer to them as Native Americans are others trying to be politically correct. I can tell you that when I lived in Florida, my home was virtually next door to the local Miccosukee and Seminole tribes and I became friends with many of them. Believe me, they made it crystal clear that they wish to be referred to as Indians and not as Native Americans. They bitterly resented that term. Guest lvdkeyes Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I certainly understand your point GB. I was not trying to be PC when I said Native American. I was differentiating between them and the Indians from India which Geezer appears to not know the difference between the two. Geezer: "So far as I am concerned it would have been better if General Custer had wiped out all the Indians at the battle of the Little Big Horn. (If you’re not familiar with American history, don’t worry about it.) It would be wonderful to be able to use the sidewalks without having to walk around them while they are tugging at your arm." If Custer had done so, you, if you are Indian descent, would not be here for us to be having this discussion. How nice that would be! Quote

Guest GaySacGuy Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Geezer, we know that you are only worried about the number of pockets and where they are placed...and that would be a challange for nearly any taylor!!! Also, some of these people are taking you serious....too bad!! Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Ok, then the next logical question is for Geezer. Where do you have your clothes made? Quote
Guest Geezer Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Ok, then the next logical question is for Geezer. Where do you have your clothes made? Sorry for the delay in replying; my internet connection has been down for two days. After acquiring twelve pairs of shorts with various defects I did what I always do when faced with an intractable problem. I gave it to my BF. He always deals with them adroitly. I am Bertie Wooster; my BF is Jeeves. Three weeks later he gave me two perfect pair of shorts. A trip to Bhutan required two long sleeve shirts with the same features as the short sleeve shirts I have made for traveling (seven pockets, only two of which are visible.) I asked him to take care of it. Two weeks later he gave me the shirts -- done perfectly. I have two Tilley hats (each has a pocket ) guaranteed not for life, but forever. They advise you to put them in your will. Both have been replaced for wear to the brim at no charge. They were showing signs of wear again. While they can be replaced free, I might have to pay a bribe to get the replacements through customs; I’ve had to do it before. I gave the hats to the BF and in a week he returned them good as new. I never ask how he does these things, but tonight, in order to answer GB’s question, I inquired about the shirts, pants and hat. To make the shirts and pants he located a Thai gentleman who works alone making uniforms for hotels. He always has more work than he can do, and asked my BF not to tell people about him. You could probably visit a hotel and ask who makes their uniforms. The BF found a Thai lady to do the hats. She has since married and moved from Pattaya. You should understand these are casual clothes. Tailored, wrinkle free fit is not required. As GaySacGuy implied, if the pockets are right I’m happy. The ADSL is still down, but Jeeves just connected my mobile phone to the desktop computer. I am online that way -- and it is a little faster than my ADSL ( when it is working) Quote
