For the US Dollar, that's more than a full point down in less than one week: US Dollar: 34.30 Euro: 46.595 British Pound: 51.995 Australian Dollar: 26.10 Canadian Dollar: 29.7075 The following appears in the BANGKOK POST: _____ Korn: Baht Value Hurting Exporters Published: 11/05/2009 Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said the strengthening baht has affected exporters considerably, and it is the responsibility of the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to handle this matter. The Thai currency had strengthened because of the high current account surplus, and this had obstructed the country's export growth, Mr Korn said on Monday. He said the increase of oil excise tax would not affect the general public during the earlier stages because the government would use the money from the Oil Fund to support the tax hike. However, the government would have to allow the market mechanisms to operate naturally in the long run, the minister said. He said his ministry will propose the new land and property tax bill to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the cabinet before deciding to proceed further. Quote
