Korn: Baht Value Hurting Exporters

Published: 11/05/2009

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said the strengthening baht has affected exporters considerably, and it is the responsibility of the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to handle this matter.

The Thai currency had strengthened because of the high current account surplus, and this had obstructed the country's export growth, Mr Korn said on Monday.

He said the increase of oil excise tax would not affect the general public during the earlier stages because the government would use the money from the Oil Fund to support the tax hike.

However, the government would have to allow the market mechanisms to operate naturally in the long run, the minister said.

He said his ministry will propose the new land and property tax bill to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the cabinet before deciding to proceed further.
