Olddaddy Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Having not looked at the other gay forums for months, only to notice not as many posts as in the past. My question to older longer stay expats in Pattaya is , have you noticed less gay expats moving to Pattaya /Jomtien? If so, are all the "new" ones sociable as the ones say 20 years ago or more into their phones and more introverted? Is there any difference in this current retired gay expat generation in Pattaya? Do you think there are less gay expats retired in Pattaya than say 20 years ago or more or about the same? I know obviously many have passed on ,many we do not see post as in the past sadly which means they may have passed I did click on to read a few older posts on here and click on the posters names some of whom haven't been on the forum for years so I gather they have passed. bkkmfj2648 Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I became a new retiree in Pattaya in September 2022 - but I have been visiting since 2014 off and on. So, I cannot speak for what has happened in the last 20 years. But I can share an observation that any of us visiting or living here has probably noticed - the distribution of people on the online apps (Grindr, Hornet, HeeSay, Romeo, etc.) - which in my opinion has shifted: From Asians and Farangs TO Russians, Asians, and Farangs I would venture to say that the Russians represent between 30% to 40% of the online community in Grindr and Hornet. In Romeo - predominantly a Farang and somewhat Asian hangout place it has shrunk in popularity but has not see this big influx of Russians. Regarding HeeSay (formerly BLUED), I am a new member - and I see a small farang representation and a much bigger Asian representation. Do you all think this shift in what we see of "who is online" is representative of what is happening in Pattaya in 2024? Regarding the 3 forums - you can definitely see that they are shrinking and dying off. What they have been replaced with I am not sure that there are any other social media vehicles that fill the role that these 3 forums did (Gaybutton, Sawatdee Gay Thailand, and GayGuides). vinapu Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I can't say much about Pattaya as on last trip I was there only 2 days but week or two ago while strolling Silom it dawned on me that while say 10 years ago majority of obvious tourists were Westerners now they are replaced by Asians. There were visits in bars where I was one of very few farangs in attendance and once in Tawan even boy sitting with me noticed ' you only farang in bar". Only place when one can still see farangs en masse is soi 4. Is this good or bad? I don't care who keeps our bars running and boys employed. So as long as I have fun for me this is cosmetic change but change it is. Only negative part of that shift for some may be that boys in bars are more overdressed now than in the past. I was told that this is what Asians like. Whether it's true , I don't know. I can live with guys on the stage in sexy , fitting jeans although ones in tracksuit pants are bit too much when boys esthetics are discussed. dscrtsldnbi, Olddaddy, reader and 1 other 4 Quote

I noticed this also in Tawan on my one visit, I think I saw 2 farang and the rest were asian customers (plus me who is half asian). And like you, I really don't mind who is in the audience as long as they keep the bars running and the boys employed! vinapu 1 Quote

If I will fire Hornet in Moscow, 90% will be Russians here, 5% of Chinese and 5% Westerners. Speaking about Pattaya and TH in general. as well as about Vietnam and Goa - it is holiday time now, so many Russians flew to TH and VN for vacation. By the way: on New Year White Party this year in Bangkok about 60% were Chinese, Taiwanese, Singaporeans and Honkongers. Quote

You've only noticed it now? I've been saying this for years now. It's also been there in the official tourism statistics for over a decade. Asian tourists far outnumber westerners in both the general as well as gay traffic. And here I qualify that I am not using "asian" in the UK sense where it means indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi, but I mean the oriental Asian (what a quaint term). gerefan Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I frequently take my evening walk along the length of Dongtan Beach and back. I used to pass numerous other Brits (you could tell by the language) but this time, in the last 2 1/2 months, I haven’t heard any. Same in Jomtien generally and in Pattaya. I do pass numerous farangs but unfortunately don’t recognise their language. So not Western European (German French Dutch etc) as I would recognise them. Quote

If the term is "quaint," maybe you should just not use it at all? East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander are very commonly used these days. We're long past the time when British usage rules the world. So if those tourists are inded from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, or Korea, it's fine to describe them as East Asian. This isn't a matter of being "PC." It's a matter of being accurate and specific. 🎯 Quote
