reader Posted January 21 Posted January 21 NOTE -- Russia and the Afghanistan disagree on how many Russian citizens were on board. From The Nation Two Russian citizens were among the passengers on a charter flight destined for Moscow that went missing over Afghanistan, as reported by Russia's state-run TASS news agency on Sunday, citing a source "in the operational services." A manifest list for the plane, published by the SHOT news outlet, indicated that the entire crew were Russian nationals. Russian aviation authorities announced on Sunday that a Russian-registered plane, believed to have six individuals on board, disappeared from radar screens over Afghanistan the previous night, following reports of a crash from local Afghan police. According to Russia's RIA news agency, the flight was a medical evacuation mission from Thailand to Moscow. The Russian Consulate in Bangkok stated that the plane was conducting a medical evacuation from the Thai city of Pattaya, transporting a Russian woman accompanied by her husband. The spokesman for the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Abdul Wahid Rayan, attributed the crash to an engine problem in a statement on the social media platform no X (formerly Twitter). He also claimed that there were "seven Russians abroad" and alleged the aircraft belonged to a Moroccan firm. Four out of the six people aboard the Dassault Falcon 10 aircraft survived the crash. The jet was carrying out a medical evacuation from Thailand to Russia, traveling from Utapao airport, near Pattaya, to Moscow via India and Uzbekistan, Russia's Federal Agency for Air Transport said. Anna Evsyukova, who was urgently hospitalized in Thailand and was due to continue her treatment in Russia, and her husband Anatoly Evsyukov, were killed in the crash. The survivors arrived from Dubai to Moscow on Friday. One of the Falcon 10 pilots, Arkady Grachev, said on Friday the crash was caused by "technical problems." Co-pilot Dmitry Belyakov also said that the cause of the Falcon 10 crash was a technical malfunction, "apparently a problem with the fuel," state-run news agency Tass reported. In the aftermath of the crash, the Afghan newspaper Hasht-e Subh reported, citing sources in the region, that $1.2 million was "stolen" from the private jet. The publication reported that Mohammad Ayub Khalid, the Taliban governor for the northeastern Badakhshan province, has ordered an investigation into the matter. Quote

reader Posted January 28 Author Posted January 28 Having read various accounts of the incident, two radio calls from the pilots indicate a fuel problem and that both engines had stopped in sequence. This suggests that fuel taken on at Uzbekistan may have been contaminated or not delivered in sufficient quantity. That fire did not accompany the crash further supports the possibility of low fuel volume. I've seen a photo of the two surviving pilots who have facial injuries and of a Russian medic who also survived. A photo from the scene depicts wreckage strewn over extended, snow-covered terrain. One wonders if taking that sum out of country in cash was reported properly to the Thai authorities. I'm pretty sure there's limit of how much one can take without reporting that. Mavica 1 Quote
