Need a doctor recommendation

Been taking Amoxicillin for almost five days and it hasn’t done anything for my upper respiratory infection. I’m assuming the French doctor ( forgot his name) is retired. I’m in Pattaya.

Amoxicillin is the cheapest/weakest antibiotic. If no effect you need to step up to Augmentin aka Co-Amoxiclav. Realistically any doctor at any hospital will make this step up but good to actually have an examination  in case there are other issues.

Rather that speculate what the problem is may I suggest you consult a specialist hospital doctor. They have the equipment and expertise to identify the problem and fix it.

If you are in Pattaya one hospital you could visit is BKK Pattaya hospital.

Dr Oliver is good ,I think it was 900 baht last time I visited him in September but he is good as in takes a interest in your health

He is up off thaipraya Rd Jomtien

He may suggest a blood test too which I recommend you get , I believe everyone should get a Full blood test every few months including sexual health blood test , ask for it if he doesn't say anything.

My dentist prescribed Amoxicillin when my gum has infection.  It worked.

Maybe I’ll do this. I was there two weeks ago and had to go back everday to the wound center. I got a painted tattoo on the beach and had an allergic reaction to it. Having a rough time since I’ve been here.

Ooooh I was looking for that last time I was back. Need a temporary tattoo to help envision if I would want the next step to honor a friend.

Upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses, so won't benefit from antibiotics. In fact, outcomes are worse for those treated with antibiotics. Amoxicillin is mainly helpful only for dental infections or strep throats. In the case of URI's, if one is at risk, it may be helpful to test for Covid and take Paxlovid (if done promptly). Otherwise, with URI's, one just has to treat the symptoms. It's not at all uncommon for URI symptoms to last 10 days.

If you go to BKK Pattaya Hospital or any Pattaya private hospitaI, I recommend that you buy any meds they prescribe at an outside pharmacy. There is a big markup on meds at the hospital pharmacy. I was at BKK Pattaya Hospital last weekend for a procedure and still a bit dizzy afterwards, I paid without checking too closely, 4850 baht for the meds. I did a bit of research afterwards and I could have purchased the meds for 40% less outside the hospital. There is a Fascino pharmacy nearby the hospital.

We never got any feedback from the OP as to how things ended up. Perhaps we can get an update?

Yes, I’m finally feeling better today. I went to Bankok/ Pattaya hospital last Monday, 9 days ago. The doctor ordered Covid test( negative), lung X-ray check for pneumonia ( clear) and a blood test. My c reactive protein was high and white blood cell slightly high.

She gave me four medicines. The main one was an antibiotic. It seems to have worked. I think it was bacterial infection of my throat. I did cocaine when younger and have scar or ulcer there and occasionally it gets infected. This was a bad one though and I could hear gurgling sounds. Besides the horrendous cough I felt lousy but no fever.

I’ve had a lot of sex so maybe that did something. At some point I’m getting comprehensive std test at pulse clinic.

luckily for me I have good health insurance from USA which covers me when in Thailand.

Assuming you've been vaccinated for diphtheria, the only bacterial infections which affect the throat, generally, are strep and gonorrhea (staph can cause an abscess, but that would be obvious), and none of those cause a cough. I'd be curious as to what the other medications were. Viral infections usually turn the corner after 10 days, so it could be just a coincidence. If one of those medications was prednisone, that could really have made a difference, especially if there's a history of asthma. Hopefully you were tested for gonorrhea (though, again, that won't cause a cough). The antibiotic may have been helpful if a sinus infection developed and was the cause. Normally, a sinus infection will cause site-specific pain under either eye, behind the nose, or near the center of either side of the forehead.

Since it doesn't appear as if a specific diagnosis was made, it would probably be prudent to recheck the hsCRP and CBC to make sure the numbers normalize when this is over. Although quite unlikely, you want to make sure something weird isn't going on (for example, leukemia, or tuberculosis). If one of the medications was prednisone, do not recheck the CBC/hsCRP until at least a week after you finish the prednisone.

Unicorn, thank you for all this information. I really believe sharing this stuff is very helpful. I can’t stand the posters who say only listen to your doctors. These are usually not proactive when it comes to their health. They wait until the doctor tells them they have some awful disease. Then before they know it they’re on dialysis etc.

The antibiotic was Cravit tab 750 mg.(Levofloxacin). It might have been a virus that ended up clearing after about ten days , so that might not have done anything . I don’t have history of asthma and I don’t think I had prednisone. Besides the Cravit, she prescribed Mucosolvan, Nac Long(Acetylcysteine)Effervescent, and a green tablet taken twice a day. I threw out the paper work because my insurance covered everything.

I believe I had the diphtheria vaccine about twenty years ago. Maybe need to get that updated, but I’ve had the Shingrix, Gardasil 9, and several Covid vaccines recently so I don’t want to overdo it.

It’s quite possible I could have gonorrhea or chlamydia in my throat but they did not test for that. I try to get tested and pay for std stuff separately from my insurance. I’m planning on getting extensive std testing done soon.

As far as leukemia, or tb, well I hope not, I don’t really want to go back again as I had a bad reaction to a painted tattoo and had to go to wound center for a week, so I’ve used my insurance quite a bit.

I was going to get the tb vaccine but decided against it as you test false positive frequently afterwards. Same as I test positive for Syphilis now because I had it before.
