Thanx ,i really like these small bars, usually friendly host, quiet places to relax and drink.and choose a book to read.

THREE ZONE was next door to Ducs bar. Also wo read.as a great place to read.

Another small bar i used to like was LE CAGE,but it got too busy and commercial type.

no i just like the small cosy quiet bars.Somewhere to sit outside, grab a coffee and a good book,

I also enjoy Duc"s bar and a couple times a week stopped in for a drink. But my favorite place to sit and watch is just around the corner at the Green Chairs bar across from Euro.

Sounds like you're the sort of customer who is not much value to any bar business.

Drink a coffee and read a book - for how long will you be reading and nursing that coffee? It's a bar not a library!!!

How much profit is a bar going to make out of you to cover the costs of rent, electricity, staff and the rest?

True LOL,even though DUC S bar had a selection of books for customers.

I usually have to go through 3 or 4 coffees to get my caffeine fix for the day.

Hey cummon gay_grampa! Are you a bar owner? Maybe you forgot that someone else who was into books got a cafe owner let her stay for hours sipping just one cup of coffee. Of coures, she was writing rather than reading. Her name? J. K. Rowling, and she made the coffee place famous when that book became the first of the Harry Potter series. Maybe taylorsquare will turn to writing when he's fed up of reading ;)

There is an oft quoted theory about bars that goes something like this. If you go into a bar and order a soft drink or a coffee, then you are a skinflint and how can the bar possibly survive on an income derived frrom such drinkers. It is, of course, complete CRAP.

Let me stress at this point that I drink alcohol in bars, but if a bar has a coffee machine, sells coffee, has water or fizzy drinks in the fridge, and has a menu with such items on it, then I defend the right of someone to drink such things there.

Of course, if the said drink is made to last longer than 30 minutes and other customers are forced to go away because of lack of seats, then I will expect the bar staff to diplomatically request another drink is bought.

I agree with Lester ... do people really think that the mark up on a soft drink is less than that of alcoholic drink? Me thinks bar owners rub their hands with glee when someone orders a nam soda!

Actually, the markup on a soft drink is probably much more than the markup on an alcoholic drink. Observe for yourself next time you buy a drink for a boy. In most bars the boy gets a 20 baht tip from the bar when he orders a soft drink. If he orders an alcoholic drink he gets nothing.

Those of you who are somewhat financially challenged might consider Minimart 24 across Soi VC from Cocktail Boyz if you're objective is to just have a drink with a farang friend.

Archa Beer is only 20 baht; club soda only 10 baht. Thai whiskey and ice buckets are also available. Outside there is seating for about 12.

And afterward you can go back to your hotel, climb to the top floor, and fly out an open window. Meaning no disrespect to you or the no doubt fine folks at the Minimart, this post just makes me sad. I think anyone reduced to doing their socializing at the Minimart on a regular basis would be better off returning to their home country, or staying there in the first place.

None taken Captain! B)

Not sure if you're familiar with the place I mentioned but being seated in real chairs outside Mimimart 24 chatting with a farang friend is not really any different than chatting with a friend on the chairs outside Sunee Plaza Bar (Plaza Bar?).

Except that appears tacky to be outside a place called Minimart 24.

Like everything in life, the minimart has its place. . .

There are one or two beer bars in the area where you can sit with a drink and not have a smiling soul come up to you, but in the majority you will.

The smiling souls are not going to be too keen to be seen with the average farang drinking outside a minimart.

So if you fancy having a quiet drink on your own or with a farang friend, it might be an option.

Rogie, I'm not sure if by smiling face you mean a Thai boy, a farang you already know, or a farang u don't know.

If you mean a farang you already know, sometimes I'll tell a friend to meet me at Minimart 24. If one's on a bar budget of 500 baht a day (that's average so a 0 day means the next day can be 1000), it makes sense to meet up at a place where beer is 20 baht, soda is 10 baht, and no tip expected while just killing time waiting for your buddy to show up.

If you mean farangs you don't know, some guys were playing chess there and I was able to get in on their game.

It's not the only beer bar I frequent, but it does have its place.

I know some guys don't like the stigma of being outside a place called "Minimart 24" but the price difference between one beer in most beer bars and one beer at Minimart 24 is a meal to me.

Once again, for guys who don't know the place I'm talking about, it's not like sitting on the curb outside a 7/11. It has real chairs and tables.

But I walked by the place for months without it ever occurring to me that it's a place to drink.

Sorry Astrrro, when I said smiling face I had Land of Smiles in mind. So yes, a local boy. It occurred to me the minimart might be a good place to enjoy a quiet drink with or without farang company. I don't know about you, but I like the ambience of the place in its own right. Sometimes I am happy just to watch the world go by. When the time comes for some action, we all know where to go to find it. Sometimes you are happy for the action to approach you; sometimes not.
