rio in may 2023, a short report

Just had a quick trip to Rio, it has been a while since I went there, first time after the pandemic. Also, first time in May, all of my last visits were in Dec/Jan.

Visited new Meio Mundo on Monday, with little expectation. As I expected the guys were not really my type (muscled guys), a chill place. I think it is my first time here, although I did think about going there before. 

Visited Point 202 on Wednesday, it was similar to my previous experiences there: the guys are not really my type, though I would definitely see some guys from 117 there on Wednesday. The main issue with 202 is that it can be very social, meaning the boys would socialize with the regulars and engage less with less frequent visitors, like tourists etc. Either way I managed to have fun with two 117 guys.

Visited 117 on multiple occasions. I felt like there were a lot less hot guys at 117 compared to my previous visits. Could be because it was May this time or it could be because pandemic changed it. Before, I would see multiple really hot guys: tall, muscular and good looking, sometimes model level guys. This time, I rarely saw them. Of course, there were hot guys but not the level I used to see before pandemic. So many more frequenters can comment on that. I was a bit disappointed in my initial visit on Tuesday (clients' day) and was just chilling in the sauna. There was a tall black guy, not in good shape but had a big tool, who spoke good english. He chatted with me, so I asked a few questions and asked if he sees less guys after pandemic, he agreed. Maybe it is pandemic, who knows.

Still the rates were reasonable and I had to pay a massive fee for my air tickets so I tried a few guys whenever I visited 117. There was an airforce guy, I think his name was Austin, quite confident about himself but he wasn't really my type. Showed me his instagram and he knows it works and it worked for me. I just said, why not try an air force guy because it is cheap haha. Actually he quoted me 400 initially, and I couldnt help but laugh and said no. He was not really my type, so I said 150 with the preparation to be rejected but immediately accepted it. I think the rate was 150 these days, I paid 150 for everyone but one. He has a good attitude and even though the sex was not great, it was not bad and he at least tried his best. This is something I really like about Brazilians: their service oriented attitude. Another one was tall slim/toned actor, who looked like young wolverine(Hugh Jackman). I like his face, nothing else was my type, except maybe his size, which is on the thinner side, not huge. Again, cheap, so I went for it.  Ok sex, but good attitude, so I was happy. He kept asking me every time I am there, I kept dodging nicely lol Those are two memorable ones, I had a few more but don't remember the name, kinda tanned skin, tall typical brazilian face, sex was good in most cases, but look was not really the model like hot faces, which is something i used to see before.

The unfortunate thing is that I had two not so good experiences this time. One was with Reyzinho. Black, muscular. I kinda liked him because he would come and kiss me so passionately but his tool was too big for me, so I didn't wanna try him. But he was very persistent and told me he would go slowly etc. I think once I read here that the guys with big ones tend to know how to use it, so eventually, I agreed. But once in the room, he had a bit of an attitude. No passionate kissing and no connections. Without kissing, I can rarely take big ones and I explained to him but he doesn't speak english and google translate has its limits. He was kinda angry and started blaming me for not letting it in. I got even more pissed because without kissing, I was not able to relax or get in the mood. I explained it to him but he said he didn't understand. I am sure google translate had enough for him to understand but he just used it for his advantage and pretended not understanding. Anyway, after a few trials, I just said, we stop and leave. I paid the agreed amount full but didn't get what we agreed on, so wasn't happy but when he got the money he didnt even say thanks. Next day he came to me and asked again, I was just shocked that he had the courage to ask for another session after that experience. Weirdly, he even texts me now once a while even though I don't reply....I didn't know what I could have done, like maybe talking to the manager? I have no idea how they treat cases like this but I know they select boys carefully.  In any case, I saw some guys arguing with the manager (pay desk) when they were leaving because of overcharge so I didn't feel like talking about it with the manager. Also, next day another guy was talking about Reyzinho at the reception but no idea what it was. I suspected it was about paying drinks for him because he bought a drink for him before leaving.

Another bad apple was a guy from Sao Paolo, he frequents the Lagao apparently, short and muscular, on the pale side of skin tone. He said he kisses with tongue but when we went to room, he just had a dry kiss and went around without kissing. No more kissing. Never had this sorta attitude at 117, but i was like whatever. Anyway, maybe these two bad cases along with less guys I really liked, I didn't have the amazing experience I used to have there before. It is a lot less costly for me to go to Barcelona, which nowadays has a lot of good options, so if I include the travel cost, I ended up not really feeling like coming back to Rio. Maybe it will change but for now, i will stick to Europe for a while

Interestingly, I saw some good looking guys on online websites. Like the model looking guys I used to see at 117, even though they were not the ones I know from the saunas. I kinda thought maybe the hot ones started using the online thing rather than the saunas. Maybe experienced guys here know better and can chime in. I had one very good hire from online. I think it was only 200 at his place, including massage, so it is very similar to the sauna rate if you include the room cost. Many were advertising for 300 but I can't have so many outside hires after getting some in the sauna, so the uncertainty of quality time when hiring from online really made me explore the online part far less, maybe I should have gone for online more

Your overall impression is similar to mine. Several weeks in Rio each of past 2 winters. I need to get away from northern cold and there is always the hope that a nice volume of impressive looking trade will make the travel distance worthwhile. Fortunately, the cost of living for extended vacationing there is very manageable and nonsexual aspects are fine, though getting rather same old same old routine.

Expectations for access to guys that appeal has required some adjustment. Fewer and farther between but generally positive exchanges. Nobody that I absolutely need to repeat with. Not much evidence of “new crop” phenomena.

I no longer experience withdrawal upon return home, no longer immediately look at flights to help in coping with missing the opportunities that used to have more ‘wow factor’ and contribute to the regret of leaving. If my home base was Europe I doubt that I would go to Brazil other than for seasonal southern hemisphere climate. I have no strong desire to return to Rio. That level of indifference would have been inconceivable several years ago.

The saunas don't select they guys, so they have no control if muscle guys come or not.

It's hit or miss.... I was in Lagoa tonight and were 5 guys that I could've gone with...brought 1 back to my room, that I have never seen before, from Recife and was GREAT.

I'm not a fan of Rio, I'm more big city vampire.....SP usually fits all my needs, apartments, guys, restaurants, flights.

My thoughts exactly about São Paulo over Rio. Mind you my view is coloured by the fact I was once mugged in Rio but have been to São Paulo 9 times unscathed. 
I have not visited since Lagoa moved. Can you give me your thoughts on the “new” Lagoa and how it compares with the old?

I wish some of them would discover rentmasseur, more a happy medium between explicit labour-defining ads for them and needing to second guess and sort for us. Most of them are thematically oriented to the salutary benefits of fitness, nutrition and pampering to begin with. They have more control over what can transpire on the table. Reviews therein tend to be very cryptic and a bit better support the avoidance of unfortunate commercial sex work stigmatization.

Better location, in my eyes. Smaller, spread out on multiple floors, only a couple of "muscle" types, not as many as before, no loss for me. More expensive, like everything else ......can't believe a city the size of SP only supports 1 gay sauna like this.

But is still good most times and better than nothing and gives me a reason to visit SP

Not all of them. It is not so easy for a Brazilian to open an OF account. Indeed, reach out to those who have one, but you will miss many pearls. 

I stay in the saunas. I am not into the kind of guys many friends here are missing, and the test driving does not have competition in my book.

It was neither necessary nor rude, so half right. No shortage of throwaway comments entered by many of our peers.

Without mentioning any names, there was a prolific poster here who, although he never mentioned it on the boards, was recently (as in the past several years) mugged, robbed or physically assaulted on the streets of São Paulo on three trips in a row. He did not mention it publicly but he told friends. I am not sure why, but I suspect he didn’t discuss it here or any of the other popular gay travel boards because São Paulo is his favorite city in Brazil.

But to suggest that crime is somehow greater in Rio than in São Paulo is not exactly absurd. It is, not just perceptually, but even statistically. The homicide rate in Rio is nearly 3 times that of São Paulo. São Paulo being the economic center of South America is just a wealthier city than Rio, with a more robust police force, which helps reduce at least the perception of crime if not the reality of it.
