I always put the "do not disturb" sign at the door whenever I get in the room,with or without the boy, and only take out the sign when I leave the room.   I don't want to be disturbed even when I am alone in the room.

Tipping the house keeper?  why not? It's only a couple dollars.  You can always hunt down your house keeping maid later, or tip double/triple on the day you do want the house keeping.  It's up to you.

Always leave a tip on the pillows daily.
Then she/he knows you appreciate them and try harder for you.
Once I did this at the Malaysia and it resulted in flowers in the room most days.
Probably liberated from departing guest's rooms😂.

some people have habit of leaving tip at end of stay but that may lead to tip being harvested not by maid but receptionist checking if everything in the room is OK specially when we are leaving at time  when maid is not at work yet or already, like early morning or late at night. 

I learned that lesson from cleaner when I was first time in Siem Reap good 20 years ago.
