PattayaMale Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Today on a Thai station they showed an old style Muay Thai fighting contest which was being held in Chiang Mai with several countries bordering competing. This is a brutal sport. No boxing gloves are used. There are strings or just tape covering the hands. So there was a lot of bloody faces. There are no judges. If both are standing at the end of the fight there is no winner. My friend told me that this is true Muay Thai. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Sounds like Clint Eastwood in one of those Any which Way films where he was a bare knuckle fighter. B) Quote

B) That would be a good way to view it. This is the first time I saw this and really thought it was no longer practiced. There were many military there. This might have been since it was held right on the Burma border. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I saw this several year ago in Phuket at a beer bar and it was extremely brutal. One guy was beaten so badly his face looked like hamburger. In the 3rd round his opponent was strutting around very cocky and the badly beaten one was staggering around. Finally, he did a round house punch and the cocky guy went splat on the mat and didn't move. The victor made his rounds around the bar and collected his money. I haven't watched another muay thai boxing match since. Too gruesome for me! Quote

I am not sure I could watch a match because of the blood and guts. Even today's muay thai boxing is a little too gruesome for me. I feel sorry for some of the young kids being beaten and kicked for the sake of sport. Funny, I do not feel the same way about American football, but I guess that is because of all the protective equipment. Quote
