Members kjun12 Posted September 1, 2022 Members Posted September 1, 2022 Do any of you know or suspect that you suffer from Alzheimer's Disease? If you don't feel comfortable in responding here please answer with a personal message to me. I feel that I have the beginning stages of Alzheimers. Olddaddy 1 Quote
t0oL1 Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 Eat salmon and blueberries for optimum nutrition. You might want to check out Biaural Beats on YouTube. This has been shown to reduce plaque in the brain. Personally I believe the plaque is a result of infection. Smoker? I took Chantix and got incredible dreams almost all night long. REM sleep increases the “washing of the brain” and I feel great once I got used to the 1/2 dosage my doctor approved. Not always approved by your insurance. They should seriously investigate this. But you can always tell your doctor you picked up the habit and have him prescribe it for you. I also enjoy the dreams - like HBO for your dreams. Quote
PeterRS Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 I have several friends who suffered from Alzheimers, two sadly no longer with us. The early stage seems very similar in each case. We'd meet quite regularly but once the disease begins I'd notice they'd ask me several times during a lunch or coffee - "and what are you doing now?" I think we all know that it is short term memory that is the first part of the brain to be affected. I remember seeing a very touching movie about the writer Iris Murdoch beautifully performed by Dame Judi Dench with Jim Broadbent as her loving husband. In the movie, Iris mentions that she first became aware that something was wrong when she could not remember a specific word when she was writing. This sometimes concerns me as I will perhaps be watching television and want something from the fridge. When I get there, I wonder "what was it I wanted to get?" Thankfully it only takes a second or two before I remember. Friends tell me this is not uncommon as one gets older. But if it gets worse over a period of time, I will get checked. kjun12 and Ruthrieston 2 Quote
Popular Post reader Posted September 1, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 1, 2022 I was saddened to hear about your fears of memory loss. I'm in my late 70's and every time I can't grasp the word I'm looking for, that thought crosses my mind. Usually I recall it later but it still troubles me. Your writing certainly doesn't reflect any signs of it. You express yourself clearly and without repetition. The forums has become more of a sounding board for members to acknowledge fears, many associated with aging. I think that's one of the true benefits of a site like this that we can unburden ourselves of some of our fears and also describe what gives us joy. I wish you well and thank you for trusting others of us with your concerns about the disease. tassojunior, Olddaddy, traveller123 and 4 others 7 Quote
fedssocr Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 You should probably have a talk with your physician. They can do baseline testing. https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/10_signs vinapu, PeterRS and tassojunior 2 1 Quote

There are drugs to slow it down , you really should go to see a specialist to test you , I forget the names of the specialist doctors ? ( Pardon the pun😊) but are they called Geriatricians. My late father had either Alzheimer's or dementia I can't recall but when I went to visit him in the nursing home just like him there were old boxers in there , I remember the bell sound went off in my phone and they all started boxing on with each other🥊 ,wasn't until I sounded the bell again until they stopped 🤣 . True story !! Quote
Members tassojunior Posted September 2, 2022 Members Posted September 2, 2022 +1 Doc test. My handyman (who's my age) is on some very expensive drug for dementia now. I need to test. I find it's harder to multi-task and that makes me "forgetful". Something that's not important or the center of attention to me is forgotten easier, but not important things. I've always had an aversion to remembering names of people I don't know well or movie characters. That has absolutely gotten worse. Quote
