reader Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 NOTE — Judging from the photo, the top of balcony appears well below the waist of the young man. This is not unusual in older buildings. Current codes require railing to be above center of gravity of most people, making it far less likely that some could topple forward. From Perth Now A young Australian tourist has plunged to his death in horrific circumstances at a hotel resort in Thailand. According to the Bangkok Post Joshua James Connell, 19, from Canberra, was walking along a wall near a hotel swimming pool in Phuket before falling six storeys to his death. There is CCTV which captured the incident, according to local reports. A local policeman told the Post the teenager was wearing only a pair of shorts when he slipped and fell, before landing on the kitchen roof of a nearby restaurant. He said Mr Connell and a friend had only checked in at the hotel the day prior. Staff at the restaurant were reportedly getting ready for evening dinner service when they were startled by a loud noise on the roof above the kitchen. The local policeman said some of the roof tiles were broken by the impact of the fall. caeron, vinapu, Ruthrieston and 2 others 5 Quote
spoon Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Sad story indeed. However, it seems like the guy fell due to walking on the wall, so height of balcony seems irrelevant here. Olddaddy and TMax 1 1 Quote
caeron Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Unfortunately, the brain doesn't fully mature until about 25, and the judgment parts are last. Hence young people often make dangerous, stupid choices. I'm pretty sure most of us have. Quote
vinapu Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 from what I saw over years most stupid choices were made by mature people well over 25. About dangerous I' bit more inclined to agree floridarob 1 Quote
kokopelli 2 Posted July 2, 2022 Posted July 2, 2022 It has been reported that the young man was practicing a type of "parkour" (look it up) which ended in his death. Olddaddy 1 Quote
spoon Posted July 2, 2022 Posted July 2, 2022 If he is practicing, shouldve not done it 6th floor up the building.... I guess stupid and dangerous is fitting vinapu 1 Quote

Balconies railings in Thailand usually seem far too low. Even on new buildings like the Quarter Silom, I still think they should be about 15cm taller. Quote

On another hand I was once visiting condo on top floor in one of those Jomtien high-rises and concrete railing seemed to me unnecessary high Quote
kokopelli 2 Posted July 2, 2022 Posted July 2, 2022 I doubt that the deceased young man gave any thought or care to the height of the balcony railing; those who practice parkour know the dangers they face and do all kinds of crazy moves in their pursuit of the game. Quote
