Olddaddy Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 Thinking of staying here this week. Any new reviews? Are there now room safes or still leave valuables at reception? Any other hotels in that area, I'm not into the tartwawan Quote
reader Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 There’s an Ibis across the road. Stayed their once. Tiny but tidy rooms. https://ibis-sathorn.com-bangkok.com/ Olddaddy 1 Quote
floridarob Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 I stayed there once when Tarntawan was full....I commented to my friends that it is a VERY basic hotel. I would stay there again if nothing else was available. That was when at least Babylon was in the area and I could justify it. Their coffee shop is to me what Foodland is to Vinapu, I love their menu and food. But their rooms remind me of military barracks a little. What don't you like about Tarntawan that you'd be willing to go to Malaysia ....what about Furama, seems like it's gotten good reviews here...? vinapu 1 Quote

Guest Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 There are plenty of good hotels. The Quarter and Baan Silom are far closer to the gay scene than The Malaysia. If you want cheaper, I believe members have used The Red Planet. The Nantra is also cheap & well located, although their maintenance standards had slipped when some of us stopped staying there about 3~4 years ago. I have NOT UPDATED THIS LIST RECENTLY, but it gives a few ideas. Quote

No problem bringing guests up to your room - the reception is towards the back of the lobby - you enter right up to the elevators. They redid the rooms and they're really nice. Used to have very loud air-con. Nice pool on the roof and a bar, also great breakfasts. Last time I was there was about 2018. It may have changed since then, but I really enjoyed my stay then. Close to BTS station as well. I used to use the Malaysia Hotel with taxi drivers to get to Babylon since I wasn't sure if they'd understand Babylon. Never been there though, but it seems a bit out of the way. splinter1949 and vinapu 2 Quote

It is a nicer hotel (I think it's newer). But for me, it was not as convenient as Silom. You have to walk through the sois to get to the main streets. I've been staying at Furuma Silom since it was the Tower Inn - lots of fond memories there splinter1949 1 Quote
speedoo1 Posted June 25, 2022 Posted June 25, 2022 Skip Malaysia hotel. Too basic and seedy IMO. There are better choices up Soi Si Bamphen (the street that ends at Malaysia hotel, Ibis hotel and the 7/11 on the corner). Ibis is okay, the Aim Sathon is also good but I found the Tivoli hotel further up Si Bamphen (5min walking from Malaysia hotel) to have nice and quiet rooms; visitors is no issue. There are several good restaurants in this soi. joizy, tm_nyc and vinapu 3 Quote

It may be the same issue with Malysia hotel, for me it's too far from the scene requiring long walk or taxi but some may find it as advantage , further from hustle and bustle and taxi cost are miniscule in great scheme of things. I second remark by the speedo1 about good restaurants in soi Sri Bumphen joizy 1 Quote

Furama Silom is on Silom, for me easier to get to. Sathorn is located on a soi and you have to walk through several sois (with no sidewalks) to get there - not as convenient if you want to get to your hotel quickly, but you can also experience life on the sois off the main streets better. Sathorn is a newer hotel, Silom is older but renovated. In the end, both are good bets and no problems with visitors in either. splinter1949 1 Quote

Guest Posted June 26, 2022 Posted June 26, 2022 I prefer a hotel in the Sois & the less traffic, the better. The Furama Sathorn is close to several good coffee shops and I also like the Vegan restaurant. Both Furama hotels are about the same distance from the gay bars. Most importantly of all, when arriving and departing with my rucksack, Furama Sathorn is closer to Chong Nonsi BTS. Quote

I stay at Tarntawan many years ago when I first came to Bangkok. The bed cover was dirty and despite two calls to the desk it was never changed. I don't think their level of cleanliness has ever changed from what others have told me. That's my sole complaint about the place but it's enough for me to stay away. So I put the XXX on the place. xpaulo Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Gosh, I stayed at the Malaysia about 15 years ago. It was outdated then but I expect the rooms have been renovated. It felt pretty decadent with the escorts coming and going and sexy young fellows laying around the pool. The story then was it was built for American soldiers on R and R from the war in Vietnam. I enjoyed the thought of all those young soldiers having wild orgies there. But I saw a post, maybe on these forums, that tourist families have started staying there, that would feel odd. floridarob 1 Quote
