PattayaMale Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I imagine that this coming Monday Feb 9 most bars and entertainment venues will be closed for Makha Bucha Day. Does anyone know if any venues will be open? Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Does anyone know if any venues will be open? I believe it is optional on the part of the bars. Usually if bars are ordered to be closed, the police often don't inform them until a day in advance. My understanding, at this moment, is the bars will be open and operating normally. Banks and government offices, however, will be closed. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 There is a sign at Friendship Supermarket saying that no alcohol will be sold on Monday because of Makha Bucha Day. I don't know if this will pertain to bars as well. Quote
Guest zzrichard Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Memories Bar will be closed. From what I understand (not always too much) Makha Bucha is a National Buddhist Holiday and most venues will be closed. Quote
Guest laurence Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Thanks for the explanation zzrichard. I couldn't figure out how the ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru had anything to do with no alcohol sales in Thailand. Time for another glass of wine or maybe a new pair of glasses. Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I saw a post on another board that Krazy Dragon will be closed. I don't have any idea how many bars will close. Obviously, if they are ordered to close then they will all be closed, but I have a feeling that you'll just have to go to the bars and see, if you cant handle a one-night closing of the bars. If you're in Pattaya as a holiday maker, then look at the bright side. You'll lose the bars only for one night. Last year there were times when the bars were closed for several days in a row. Don't forget, maybe the bars will be closed and maybe they won't, but if they are there will still be plenty of boys who will be out there looking for farang. This might be a good time to experiment around and try just walking around the bar scene area, the shopping malls, etc. You can also get online and try personals sites such as Gay Romeo. I guarantee you'll find plenty of willing boys. It might be a good idea to make "arrangements" for tomorrow (Monday) today, if you are in the bars tonight. Also, if you are a drinker, then you better stock up on your booze supply today as well. Liquor will not be sold tomorrow, at least legally. I do know that several mom-and-pop shops often sell liquor anyway and even some 7-Elevens do as well. I don't know of any speakeasies in Pattaya . . . Quote

Oh yes, Machu Picchu day where the Peruvians honor the great alligator god and his teachings. Of course in Peru they also honor the god by cutting out someone's still beating heart. In Thailand they seem to be happy just lifting your wallet. Seriously, this is a great Thai holiday and it is celebrated differently everywhere you go in Thailand. Well, worth checking out the local variations. Quote

Makha Bucha is to commemorate the miracle of when 1250 monks spontaneously turned up to hear the Lord Buddha preach. Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Regarding bar closings, the latest word I have is that the bars have to wait until about midnight tonight to be informed by the police as to whether they can open tomorrow (Monday) or not. Quote
Guest buckeroo2 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 There is a sign at Friendship Supermarket saying that no alcohol will be sold on Monday because of Makha Bucha Day. I don't know if this will pertain to bars as well. I was at Friendship on Saturday evening and I read the sign about "no alcohol" sales. I read the sign twice as I found it confusing. It said that Friendship is not selling alcohol due to the holiday on Monday. I wondered why they were not selling alcohol on Saturday if the holiday was not until Monday. I thought the sign must just be poorly worded and your comment gives that thought added credence. Quote
Guest buckeroo2 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Another possibility for cruising is to walk the grounds of Wat Chai on S. Pattaya Rd. on Monday evening. Besides the religious ceremony, they have many stalls set up selling food, clothing , etc. And many of the boys will participate in the religious ceremony as well. I am not sure how long the celebration lasts, but in past years it goes on well past midnight and the grounds can be quite cruisy. But as with most occasions - the thai guys will be in groups - just make eye contact with one who catches your eye and give him a big smile. BTW, I have a dental appt. tomorrow so I know some businesses will be open. Quote
PattayaMale Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 Eric from UP2U bar said he will be open. I think this is because he serves dinner. He said his hosts would be there. This was about 11 pm Sunday night....But it might change if the police deliver a notice. Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 The information I have as of Monday noon is that in Sunee Plaza the open-air beer bars will be open, but the go-go bars will be closed. I have not heard anything at all about the Pattayaland-Boyztown bars. Quote
PattayaMale Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Some will probably be open. Oud told me his bar will be closed. Gary of Corner Bar said his bar would be closed....but it is possible that he changed his mind. Best bet will be to walk around and see what is open and what is not, I imagine. Quote
PattayaMale Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Two friends and I went out to eat in Jomtien Complex. We were going to eat at Aquarius but it was closed for the holiday so we walked around looking for a place that was open. We settled on eating at Le Bistro de ZaZa which is close to Hot Stone Grill. ZaZa has some very good roasted chicken and come with a choice of 2 soups and a small salad bar included as well as dessert. All for.........I can't remember...maybe 195 or 295. In any case the chicken was great. After dinner we went out for a drink. Most places were closed except for Dick's Cafe. They were serving alcoholic drinks and were packed! Quote
