I spend a few months a year in Europe and while the laws are very much on the side of the gays, society itself hasn't caught up that much. Yes there are ways for gays to get the equivalent of marriage in Europe, but you'll hear a lot more causual homophobia there than you will in America. While it's essentially a social taboo to make comments in public about "fags" or "queers" in America you'll find people in Spain, Italy and France making those types of remarks without thinking twice.
