Gaybutton Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 I don't think too many farangs would be visiting or living in Pattaya if it weren't for the sex. There are plenty of farangs in Pattaya who both live here and are holiday makers here and the sex has little or nothing to do with it. The Chinese who fill the tour buses. Families with kids. Married couples. There are a great many farang who go to Pattaya for their holidays and live in Pattaya who never go anywhere near the bars, gay or straight. For me, sex enhances my reasons for being here and I would be lying if I said it isn't a factor, but it isn't the only factor and it isn't the primary factor. I, for one, would be in Pattaya even if there were no gay bars at all. In my opinion, not all that many people choose a place to live or choose a holiday spot with available sex as the primary factor in their decision. Some people seem to think that sex is not just a primary factor, but the only factor. I don't think so. After all, there is plenty of sex available in many other cities in Thailand, especially Bangkok. Easy sex is available virtually everywhere in Thailand. Easy sex is readily available in Phuket, but I don't particularly like Phuket. Easy sex is readily available in Chiang Mai, but I don't particularly like Chiang Mai. Easy sex is readily available in Bangkok, but I don't particularly like Bangkok. But plenty of gay farang love those cities, among others, and wouldn't dream of being anywhere else when visiting Thailand or choosing a place to live. Do you truly believe they made their decision based solely upon sex? Even for those who really are in Pattaya only because of the available sex, why should that be viewed as something negative? I think people who base their choice with sex being the primary factor are quite narrow in their decision making. I'm definitely with Shebavon on this one. Quote
Guest laurence Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 The Chinese who fill the tour buses. Families with kids. You make Pattaya sound like Disneyland and not Sin City! As for the Chinese and other East Asians, I may be wrong, I did not think they are considered "farang". Enlighten me. As far as the lovely Russians and their families, Pattaya must be a paradise for them compared to home. And GB, tell the truth, what was your reason for coming to Thailand/Pattaya in the first place? For sex followed by culture or culture followed by sex? For me it is the "birds of a feather flock together" syndrome and there sure is a lot of flocking going on. Quote

They're foreigners and they don't come to Pattaya for the sex. For the Russians, you may be right. I don't know. I have no idea what their homes are like. I've never been to any of them and I've never been to Russia. Have you? If you are right, they also didn't come here just for sex. The truth is the reason I came to Thailand in the first place was because I was invited to do a presentation at the Royal Project in Chiang Mai. I had never even heard of Pattaya until my third trip to Thailand and even then I had no idea that gay activities even existed here. All I knew at the time was that Pattaya was a resort beach town. Gaybutton Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 A toaster oven or a higher level? Three posts in one day gets you counted that day toward the contest. However, I hate to tell you, but three short, successive posts only get counted as one or may not be counted at all. However, if you need a toaster, you can have mine. My toaster oven stays with me . . . Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Let's play make believe and say that all of a sudden there were no bars in Thailand, no gay beach, and also your entire network of boys were gone including your knowledge of how to meet boys was non-existent. So if you wanted to get laid, it would be with someone about your age. I really doubt that many posters on Gay Thailand would still be living here or traveling here. Maybe we'd be in Bali or some other location where there's a gay community, affordable living, and the opportunity to be with a 20 year old boy any night you want. But OK, this is make believe and if a new regime closed every bar, the existing sexpats could stay with their extensive list of phone numbers and the gay community that already exists. Yes, I'd still be happy living with my ladyboy teerak in my very affordable furnished studio apartment with pool and free internet. Yes, the Russians would still come. But 90% of the other single male farang tourists that formerly went to Pattaya would be in Cambodia, South America, other P4P destinations or just stay home. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 All I knew at the time was that Pattaya was a resort beach town. Yesterday, at the Embassy I met an American who was with a girl from Issan and planning to get married. I told him I just came up from Pattaya for the day and he wasn't even sure where Pattaya was. I found this very surprising. But I guess it's easy to be in our own little world and think we're all here for the same reason. Quote

If this is making any sense, I apologize to the observers for this incredibly inconsiderate, posting wasting your time. I was just trying to make no point. Did I make it? Quote

Re: your hypothetical previous post, that would make Pattaya as lively for me as say Miami is now. With a comparison of the costs of equivalent living, no doubt I would still choose to live here. Gaybutton Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 Did I make it? Yep. Let's play make believe Sorry, but as for me you'll have to include me out. I don't play that kind of hypothetical game. I fail to see what purpose would be served. This thread began as a report about the latest pedophile arrest and comments about it. Next thing we knew, it became a discussion as to whether speaking out against pedophiles makes you a pedophile too. Now it's going to become "Let's play a game" and see if sex is the only reason to be in Pattaya. I've already stated my opinion. I don't see a reason to find new ways to say the same thing that's already been said. Quote

The above post by Astrrro supports my proposition that people come to Thailand (if not Pattaya) for sex. An American with an Issan girl planning to get married? If that is not about sex then just what is? He traveled half way around the world to get laid. I think he was in Thailand for same reason as most, except for the Chinese and Russian tourists, that is. Quote

These factors might give a clue as to whether it was sex or love. Quote
Gaybutton Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 He traveled half way around the world to get laid. How on earth can you make that assumption? You can't possibly know the circumstances behind their relationship, their ages, or anything else at all about either of them other than the fact that they wish to get married. That supports your proposition? There could be all kinds of different reasons why they are getting married. For all you know, getting laid had nothing to do with why this man came to Thailand. For all you know he could be someone who was here on business, met the girl, fell in love, and now wants to get married. I don't see how this supports your position in any way. It seems to me that you're merely making an assumption that this man came to Thailand just to get laid, and that's based solely on opinion without having any idea whatsoever of what the true story is. Guest Astrrro Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I don't know much about the guy in the Embassy. He didn't seem that much older than his future bride; I'd say 10 years max, therefore probably not a pedophile (keeping things on-topic). Quote
KhorTose Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I hate to bring everyone back to the topic, but I notice one elephant not mentioned. Drummond goes on about the gay community trying to act noble by condemning pedos, but not changing their sex tourist ways. Why does he not mention the fact that pedos are in his straight community. These do not get arrested, and male to female child sex--which is just as damaging to the victim--does not get mentioned or policed like male to male. It is very disingenuous of him not to go after his own community. Is he completely ignorant that this is going on---I doubt it. I also wonder what he would call 1000 sailors when the fleet comes in. Low life sex tourist? Definitely a double standard here. Quote
Guest shebavon Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I hate to bring everyone back to the topic, but I notice one elephant not mentioned. I agree. That would be fair-minded application of community norms. But too often we hold those we disagree with to higher standards than one's own. This is one instance. Quote
