Guest MonkeySee Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 According to the Bangkok Post, German billionaire Adolf Merckle took his own life recently becoming another casualty of the global economic problems. The married businessman and father of four, jumped in front of a train in southern Germany. Reports say he lost heavily in trading shares in Volkswagen. Other business interests included generic drugs and in cement. He did leave a suicide note but no details have been reported. Perhaps he had emotional and mental problems on top of the financial issues. Who knows? Another suicide that may be related to the economic downturn was Kirk Stephenson, the chief operating officier of the private equity house, Olivant. He jumped in front of a train at a rail station west of London, in September. The 47 year old husband and father of a young son stepped onto the tracks and was struck and killed. He left no suicide note, but the British coroner ruled the death a suicide. Two days before Christmas, Rene-Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet was found dead at his desk, both wrists slashed and bottle of pills nearby after his fortune and the money of his loved ones vanished along with his clients’ funds, when he lost $1.4 billion invested with Bernard Madoff. The Frenchman’s fund was among the bigger losers in the Madoff fraud, and one of a handful to get taken for more than $1 billion. “He was totally ruined,” his brother, Bertrand Magon de la Villehuchet, told the AP in Paris, last month. Bob Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 If that's the mood of the times, probably wise to wear a hardhat when walking by any of the high rise buildings in Pattaya these days! Quote
Guest Steve1903 Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 If it's the same story, the German guy who threw himself in front of a train had seen his portfolio drop from a value of $6 billion to a mere $3 billion. Now call me heartless if you like but my sympathy he ain't getting. Quote
Gaybutton Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 my sympathy he ain't getting. I can't imagine why. After all, do you think you could survive very long on only $3,000,000,000 (103,800,000,000 baht)? No wonder he jumped in front of a train! Quote
