Whether contributing members of the site own their data may be a question of copyright law and Bill's TOS. I don't know the legal answer. 1 hour ago, caeron said: Daddy got paid as the archivist. Apparently, he was smart enough to know that he will be totally unaffected by whatever happens after his death. He did not care. I see no wrong in rescuing a quite unique resource. Besides, whether or not I need that place to exist, it is obviously extremely significant for a lot of people. I am glad for them. unicorn 1 Quote
fedssocr Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 As far as anyone knows he died without a will or next of kin. If he didn't want the site to continue on when he was gone he certainly could have made a will stipulating that. I have no reason to disbelieve that those who saved the data when they say that they were his friends for decades. Certainly it's a lesson for everyone to make sure they have an estate plan in place. For most people it's a pretty simple process. You can even do it for free with a site like freewill.com if you are in the USA. Lucky and KeepItReal 2 Quote

caeron Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 You rate Daddy's contributions to the sites he 'built' higher than I do. The internet has a zillion forums, and forum software isn't that complicated. He also managed to make the entire review process silly complex. So, yes, it was a lot of work because he made it a lot of work. It seems like a bit of molehill to me to turn moving a free forum to a new site as any big deal. If the site were actually worth anything, he wouldn't have had to ask for donations continuously to pay his bills. Quote

Although I never met the man, someone I know who met him assures me that he was in quite poor health, and should have been quite aware of his precarious situation during this pandemic. I'm in great health, yet I have a will (although no children). Although I'm grateful he continued the site after Hooboy's death, from what I know about him (mostly, but not all, second hand, I'll admit), I'm not an adulating admirer.... Quote

Not only plans in my mind, but written down, and shared with attorneys, family, friends, etc. To be honest, most think I am morbid as I have conversations with others often about what needs to happen in the even of my early demise. For example, yesterday, I talked to my Thai ex who will get my car when I am dead. I told him I wanted to use it for one more year and wanted to put his name on the car now. He will go with me soon to put the car in his name so that when I die, there is no other discussion about the car from anyone. He also gets everything in my apartment in Thailand. My attorney knows this, he knows this, my family know this and to ensure it, I put him on the lease so that when I die, he has the legal right to take everything that belongs to me. Oh sorry, you may mean for this site. That too is very well thought out and planned including information to attorneys, family, friends, hosting company, etc. lookin, Lonnie, numerito and 1 other 4 Quote

I simply find the entire event interesting, along with the behavior of certain gay men. I remember well how Bill was accused of stealing Hooboy's property after Hooboy's sudden and unexpected death. Except, Bill had volunteered for Hooboy for many years, so several of us defended Bill's actions, feeling he was due a little latitude. As I mentioned earlier, I remember Bill writing on his board after Hooboy's death that he thought he might have IT access to some older reviews. He said he did not have access to the entire archive, but he was hoping to salvage some of it. If my memory is correct, and Bill followed through on retrieval, in essence, he may have stolen some of Hooboy's archives to build his own review site, possibly without Hooboy's family knowing or caring. But, I have no idea what details make up the truth. Personally, I don't care what happens to Bill's stuff. Anyone who has no will and no beneficiaries pretty much says all that needs to be said. 7 minutes ago, TotallyOz said: and to ensure it, I put him on the lease so that when I die, he has the legal right to take everything that belongs to me Those of us who have serious love in our life do what we have to do to protect that love once we are gone. Someone may have floated the idea before me, but I mentioned it a few days ago in response to another poster asking about a path of least resistance for preserving Daddy's site. I tried to recall the time fifteen or so years ago when I heard OZ was interested in buying the site after HooBoy's passing, but found the family wasn't interested in what happened to it. My thought was that, if OZ were still interested after all these years, there might be a way to do the deal. As far as I know, OZ has all the resources and experience needed to fold one site into another, or to run it separately. Sounds like you're a lot smarter than I am on how estates are settled and what becomes of assets. All I know is that there's probably a court somewhere that will figure out what becomes of the website. But there seem to be other plans unfolding, so I've got back to an earlier project. Quote

As far as I know, OZ has all the resources and experience needed to fold one site into another, or to run it separately. Hooboy had family, albeit suffering from the shock of his closeted life. Not sure they ever had the chance, ability, or desire to wrap their brains around the value concept of an x-rated "gay escort" website. Behavior after death is never predictable under normal conditions. Oz can speak for himself, but I suspect he's long past throwing money at Hooboy's legacy. Furthermore, what value do OLD reviews really have? Other than feeding old men's fantasy reading, I'm not seeing much. What value does old queen-chat have? Who is using these boards to plan anything that resembles current sexual behavior/practice? I suspect the numbers are extremely small. Reviewing sex falls very much into the "instant gratification" category. Everything else is just last year's news, especially with Covid. But then again, so many years are knocked off escort's lives as they age, many horny men look at the info foolishly believing it was just written yesterday. IMO, there is no question Oz is capable of merging the boards, but at this point, given the state of porn, sex-for-money, and copyright in America, why would he (anyone) want to take on more work for less money? 11 hours ago, lookin said: Sounds like you're a lot smarter than I am on how estates are settled and what becomes of assets. I'm not that smart, but it never hurts to consult an estate lawyer when attempting to acquire unclaimed personal property after a death. I've hired a few estate lawyers in my day. I've been the executor of too many estates, thanks to AIDS. The laws differ from state to state, which makes finding info (and a good lawyer) more complicated. In general, it can take a year or longer, to determine if no blood relatives exist. The courts move very slowly in these matters. If property is stolen and found out later, lawsuits can be filed. Any fool wanting to put his foot and wallet into this pool is nothing more than a fool. But it seems there is no shortage of gay men willing to donate money to something or someone, all to feed a fantasy or a horny indulgence. Good luck to them all. I've been known to do crazy things to satisfy an itch. The lessons I've learned... lookin 1 Quote
