Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a 2016 memoir by J. D. Vance about the Appalachian values of his Kentucky family and their relation to the social problems of his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, where his mother's parents moved when they were young.

A friend had me read the book a year or so ago and I loved it. I just watched the Netflix movie and it was fabulous. Glen Close was amazing and the rest of the cast was excellent. I loved the story and being a redneck myself, I totally pictured myself in this movie.

The movie. They say there are things that are inauthentic about it. Big debate on twitter.

Well, for me, it was pretty fucking authentic. I truly related. Having had relatives with drug problems and the things they did, I related. There was not one thing I found in the movie that was inauthentic other than the dinner party with the lawyers. :)

Can't wait to hear what others think as I often tend to be alone in what I think is excellent. But, then again, I love me a Bacon Whopper and think it is a delight.

I listened to the audiobook last year. I’m not from Appalachia but the author’s experience with drug addiction in his family resonated with me. Didn’t realize there was a movie adaptation. Very good performances especially from Glenn Close, who received a Golden Globe nomination. Someone mentioned there was backlash about the way the people were portrayed and I think this might have played into some of the negative reviews. But I thought it did a good job of covering the struggle of a young man trying to move forward with his life and the incredible opportunities he has with the dilemma of saving his mother from her drug abuse. Watching this felt a little personal at times, I thought the story was handled well.
