One reason I do not drive in Thailand

Traffic is bad enough in Thailand most of the year (at least in Pattaya and Bangkok), but it is even worse around a holiday. Here is a clip in the paper about the road deaths around New Years.

The seven "dangerous New Year holidays" saw 367 people killed in 3,824 road accidents nationwide, the Road Safety Centre announced Tuesday.

Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul, deputy director of the centre, said 4,107 people were injured in the road accidents during the seven-day period from December 30 to January 5.

On Monday, 275 road accidents occurred, killing 32 people and injuring 297 others.

I have been driving since i was 17 and had a car for most of my years since then. - until I moved to Thailand. Frankly, living in Bangkok I do not think a car is necessary.

I think having a car and driving in BKK would be a nightmare. When I have taken taxis in BKK it seems like it takes forever to go anywhere and parking seems to be horrific.

Much depends on where you have to get to and when you must be there. Outside the main rush hours, I have found geting around on taxis and public transport a lot easier than some other cities I know. The Skytrain to river transport is a great way (and much underused) of getting to some part of the city

I agree that public transportation is good, i.e, sky train and subway, but surface traffic is a mess in most parts of the city most of the time..

I have a car and I wouldn't want to be without one, but Bangkok is a different story. Whenever I drive to Bangkok, I park the car and rely on public transportation most of the time. Driving in Bangkok is a nightmare even on the best days.

I might try driving in Pattaya in the off season. As for Bangkok, there is no way I would give that a try.
