In my experience in Brazil and the rest of South America, it really depends on each city. In general, any establishment that serves tables will have public bathrooms for their clients. Some cities may allow owners to not share their facilities with by passers. There are underground public bathrooms  along Avenida Atlantica in Rio. There are portable public bathrooms along the rambla in Salvador.

Countless times, but not in Brazil. During years I worked in a gigantic federal building in Buenos Aires. Unusually, many of its public bathrooms for men would have fancy squatting porcelain toilets instead of the conventional sitting ones. Also many times in Argentinean country side and during my military service. So the last time I squatted to take a shit was probably in Buenos Aires in the early 90s.

With some boys I spend only 30 minutes in bed, but that's because activities are not what I'm looking and if it's not working out, there is no point to stretch it. Records (all with free boys) were 6 hours in bed (daytime, awake), one in Myanmar, one in Taiwan, one in Thailand, and after 6 hours I or he had other business to attend to.

In Brazil, if you go to a sauna, your time is about 30'/40' in the cabins. The prices I have paid for that are between 80 and 150 Rials. Every time I took a boy to my place the deal was 200 Rials, supposedly for one hour. In most cases, that hour became many. If the boys like you and are having a good time around you, they tend to stick with you. 

By the way, the one hour standard is not only Brazilian. I do not know Germany or SE Asia, but in Argentina, Mexico, the USA, and Brazil, you usually make a deal based in a one hour rate. I have never made an open ended arrangement, although many if my arrangements turned into open ended without any extra investment.

Never wear jewelry, watches or cameras in the streets, and keep your smart phones tucked away in your pockets. Wallets should never be in the back pocket. I would also advise against any headphones and Bluetooth ear pieces as well as AirPods. A camera is a definite NO.

Although foreigners (no matter how often they visit and start to feel “comfortable” or “blended in”, and no matter how intimidating they may think they are) should not do any of these things, even a local brasileiro would say that it’s a bad idea for them to carry these things on the street as well. Just because you’ve been doing these things and you haven’t yet “gotten got”, that doesn’t mean you’re immune to it. It just means that your time hasn’t come up yet. Why tempt fate?

Anyone (here or in the real world) who advises you otherwise is not your friend, your pal, or your amigo, and does not have your best interests at heart.

I'm in the same situation like Christian, looking for an alternative to Thailand.

One of my favorite holiday routine is to take a lot of pictures (with my phone), so the thought of somebody mugging me and stealing my phone creeps me out. Of course I won't flash around my phone during nightime or in dodgy areas, but is it really that risky in daylight in populated areas?

If you travel a lot, you probably know how hard it is to answer that question. The crime statistics for Brazil are unquestionably worse than for the U.S. or most of Asia. It's a numbers game and one does not know when his number will be up. I've never had a problem acting like a stereotypical tourist (camera, iphone, backpack, shorts). However, I was mugged in Salvador - the guy flashed what looked like a crude shank and demanded by daypack. That contained the last dedicated point-&-shoot camera I owned. I've used a smartphone for pictures ever since with no problem - until that phone got pickpocketed in a different Latin country! Just be careful and smart. Accept that you may have to offer electronic sacrifices to the travel gods (and the local economy). Be really careful on any beaches in Rio. The colonial touristy part of Salvador was the sketchiest place I've seen in Brazil. On the other hand, I constantly have to remind myself to be more scared in Sao Paulo: Though the city is big, loud, and messy, I don't think I've ever encountered anything that felt terribly menacing in SP.  People there seem to have jobs and things to do other than rob tourists. The middle-class Rio neighborhoods of Flamenco, Gloria, and Botafogo similarly felt more safe than the touristy ones in Copacabana and Ipanema. The smaller cities and colonial towns were never a problem.

First to put things in perspective, i feel safer in Gloria/Copa/Ipanema then i do in large areas of LA or Chicago or my hometown of Mpls!  That doesn’t mean anything if you are foolish or in the wrong place at the wrong time, no matter what world city you are in!  i have been going to Rio for 20 years usually 4 times a year and have far fewer issues then my 4 trips to Prague!  A few things i never do in Rio or Brazil(since i also frequently go to São paulo and Porto Alegre) 1)walk along the beachside of the street in Copacabana after the sun goes down! many “snatch and grabs” happen there!  2) wear no jewelry or watches!! One older American was mugged for his watch and he told me “it was only a Timex!” i told him “Timex or Rolex, all they know is you have a watch on your wrist and it’s worth something!”  3)if you have to give a second thought to doing something ...DON’T! go with your gut! 

i always have sleepovers every night i am in Brazil, for 2 reasons the first and most important is I Like It, and secondly it is much safer walking back to your hotel or Apt. with 3 or 4 guys late at night!  con’t..

There is a saying in Brazilian Portuguese that in English, translates best as “The finger is worth more than the ring.”

Putting it bluntly, some malandros will cut off a finger just to get to the ring, or slice an ear just to grab the earring. Or slice the wrist to take the watch, or the neck to grab the necklace.

A few meters away, most cannot tell the difference between a cheap watch / necklace / ring and an expensive one. They’ll only find out after they grabbed it off you and ran away, and hopefully for your sake, you weren’t sliced or diced up in the process.

I am entering my 11th straight year of going to Brazil, and about half of those visits are months-long stays. I wouldn’t advise a new traveler to behave as familiar with the place as I do, and even after more than a decade, I am not cavalier. One can still enjoy Brazil and exercise caution. 

I think it’s important, @Tomcal, for us both to disclose to new(er) posters here that, even as much as we love Brazil and as much as we travel there and feel “familiar”, we have both “gotten got” (been victims of crimes, or attempted at least). Yours (as you posted before) was by gunpoint outdoors in very upscale Ipanema. Mine was a snatch and grab (by a malandro on a bike) in broad daylight at the edge of Copanema and Ipanema. I know more brasileiros and regular-visiting foreigners who HAVE gotten got than have not. I also have a good friend who has been robbed on the streets of São Paulo three of the last four times he has visited. Some things are avoidable, but sometimes it’s just a numbers game and when it’s your time, it’s your time. Don’t wear a target on your shirt and tempt fate.

That seems to be a good location-duration visit calendar since you have Rio previously under your belt but can tweak it with Salvador Bahia. I would personally pick a similar itinerary if visiting were in the cards sooner than later. It will be interesting to have a take on how uniform the alterations are across settings in the pandemic context.

I made it to Brazil! In Sao Paulo now. There was a slight chance that immigration rule or airline rules change, but they did not and all that was different from travelling before Covid was wearing a mask and showing proof of health insurance at check-in and immigration. Full report when I´m back.
