Guest MonkeySee Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Another game, another officiating error in the NFL. On a key third-and-2 with 2:52 remaining in today's divisional playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans, the play clock clearly expired well before Joe Flacco received the snap, but no delay of game call came from the officials. The Ravens converted the first down on a long pass to Todd Heap, and ended up kicking the winning field goal later in the drive. It's not uncommon for officials to miss the play clock hitting zero, but when they do the ball is snapped nearly immediately afterward. On this play, the ball was snapped 1.35 seconds after the play clock expired (yes, I timed it). That might sound trivial, but it's really, really not. It's a long time. Watch the replay, it's preposterous how long the back judge had to make the call. This doesn't excuse the Titans for giving up the first down on the third-and-2. Nor is it intended to suggest that the Ravens couldn't have converted on third-and-7 after the penalty. The point is, they should have had to. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_...?urn=nfl,133498 Quote
KhorTose Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Yes, but your last comment says it all. The Titans blew chance after chance and there is no doubt in my mind that the better team won. I predict: The Eagles will beat Arizona--with ease and Baltimore will beat the Steelers in a very close game. THE EAGLES WILL WIN THE SUPERBOWL. For all that follow my advice and win--10% will be appreciated. Of course, if I turn out to be wrong, it won't be my fault----just bad officiating. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Stayed up late to watch the Giant game at Chick-N-Coop, a str8 bar in Pattaya last night. Coop makes a mean chili for the games that air 1AM on Monday mornings. Singha is 60 baht. I'll be in Bali for the Super Bowl. Anyone know a Bali bar that will be airing the game live? Anyone know a Pattaya gay bar that will be showing the conference championships? Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 The conference championships begin at 3:00 and 6:30 Monday morning Thai time. It's going to be cold in Steeltown. Will these games both be aired live on True (which many bars subscribe to)? Anyone know for sure a place that will be showing the 6:30 game? Or anyone know when repeats will aired? Any chance on Sophon? Quote
Bob Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 While it's likely in this case that the referees screwed up, it's possible that's not the case. What you watch on television is not the offical timekeeping but the network's (or the guy running the scoreboard) version of it. I've seen many cases where "official" time expires 1-2 seconds before or after the television/scoreboard version of it. P.S. The scoreboard timer starts when the person sees the timing ref move his arm in a downward motion. I'd guess that its (the scoreboard or television version) is never identical to the exact time that the ref actually pushes the button on the hand timer he carries. Quote

The Ravens are not a better team, as in more talented, they were just the most error free team that day. That's a big part of the Ravens' mantra, forcing the opponent into mistakes, (fumbles and ints) and if the Titans could have somehow avoided them they would have won rather handily. Also there was talk on one football forum that the play where Chris Johnson got injured was due to some dirty unnecessary tactics in the pileup. Losing Johnson and his world class speed for much of the game limited the Titans' offense after that. IMO, the AFC Championship is the true Super Bowl and whomever wins it will beat whomever the NFC champ happens to be. I love an underdog though and will root for the NFC entry no matter which team it is. At this moment, AZ just scored their third TD and look in good shape to continue a Cinderella season on to the SB, barring a big Eagles rally in the 2nd half. Quote
KhorTose Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Well I am two loses for two. Oh well, that is what is so good about American Football. Any team is capable of beating any other team in the NFL. (However, both of my picks were underdogs going in.)Okay, Pittsburgh for the winner of the superbowl over Arizona. They are playing in Tampa. Having said this, and in light of my last predictions, you may be wise to bet on Arizona. Quote
Bob Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Okay, Khor Tose, I'll take the Steelers for 5 baht. You game? We can pay off when we first meet in Chaingmai or elsewhere sometime. Quote

I think the Steelers will win, thats why I will take your bet. I've been wrong up to now, so maybe I am wrong this time to. So your on. The only thing I can say about my home team (Seahawks) is that they sure play better then the Lions. Great season this year for you guys. I mean you could have won at least one game. Quote

I mean you could have won at least one game. Touche (they suck! - then again, they always suck!). You probably didn't hear about the one incident this year, though. It was in the fourth quarter with 6 minutes to play and a train was going by the football stadium. When the train blew its whistle, the other team (probably the Seattle Chickenhawks...), figured it was the end of regulation and simply left the field. It took the Lions 19 plays to score! Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I hate the phrase "American football". To retaliate I refer to soccer as "European Football" on message boards. B) Quote

Ahhh good one Bob, but the reality of a quarterback (Orlovsky) running out of the back of the end zone for a safety at Minnesota, was funny enough. I bet he was thinking, "those guys are big and they look like they are going to hurt me". Astrro, I guess we will have to give you European's your due. We will let you call soccer "football" and try not to laugh at your little men in shorts. Quote

Guest MonkeySee Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I think the Steelers will win, thats why I will take your bet. Now that we know that Obama is rooting for the Steeler, I am sure Pittsburgh will win. Although, I do like to back the underdogs. If the Cardinals win, it would be a cinderella story. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 A question for all you afficionados. What exactly is the attraction of (American) football? I simply cannot understand how you can call any event where the players need so much body armour, which seems more like a war game, which depends (or so it seems to me) so much on the coach conveying instructions through headphones, and which consists almost totally of an unending procession of set pieces, a sport! Another question? Why is it that (American) football is all stop/start, with a lot more stop than start? Is this so that the concession holders can make profits and the TV channels insert so many advertisements? I realise I am asking to be crucified on this Board, but I am curious. And please don't ask me about 5-day test cricket! Quote

And please don't ask me about 5-day test cricket! Funny, I was going to ask you about cricket. The long answer has to do with male bonding, & homoeroticism. Skip the long answer and stick to the fact that it is a simple game with easily understood rules that anyone can play. Yes, anyone. Only the pros wear all that gear. Man and women play lighter versions all the time (flag football e.g.). Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Now that we know that Obama is rooting for the Steeler, A shrewd mood since Pennsylvania will be important in 2012. He's says he's buddies with the Steeler coach and Rooney. Anyone know where I can watch the game in the Kuta/Legian/Semnyiak area? In Pattaya you can watch at Shenanigans or at Chick N Coop, a mostly str8 bar that has one very pretty ladyboy working there. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 It doesn't look like I will be able to see the game in Ubon. We have TRUE (UBC) satellite, but the schedule shows no game. I have tried to find some place on the net, but all of them are restricted to the US only. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Found a place to watch the game in Bali. Sign on the wall indicated that the bar sells fake Viagra, Viagra, and Cialis. Was the final fumble (or forward passing motion) reviewed? If so, it seemed rather quick. Great game. Menu listed drinks including "Cock Sucking Girl Pussy Licking Cowboy" and indicated that there were other drinks available but not on the menu. Considered asking if a "Dicksucking Cowboy" was available. Quote
