Malcolm McDowell: 'I have no memory of doing most of my films'

Xan Brooks

He was once the embodiment of youthful rage and rebellion. Now, the Clockwork Orange star is reconciled to a life of golf, gangster flicks and the odd glimpse of genius

Not a good stage actor in "Look Back in Anger' off Broadway in 1980. He was lucky to work with A+ Directors.

One would have thought Malcolm McDowell was well cast in "Look Back."

He wasn't.

Nobody gets it right all the time. You take on interesting difficult challenges, aim at the dartboard and throw, then see what sticks, and how near the bullseye.

I certainly don’t get it right anywhere near 100% of the time.

Do you?

Over the years, I have seen plays with actors like Henry Fonda, Barbara Bel Geddes, Many Martin, Audra McDonald, Ralph Richardson, Jason Robards, Art Carney, Pat Carroll, Julia Roberts,  Glenda Jackson, Elaine Stritch, Gertrude Berg, Scott Wolf  and Alan Bates.  And a musical with Vivien Leigh.

They all made an impression.

I had to think about McDowell. It took a while to remember him.

Kubrick's film 'Clockwork Orange' does not come immediately to mind?

I meant as a stage actor.

And I forget to mention Seeing Kim Stanley on stage

I saw "A Clockwork Orange" several times shortly after it was released, but not in a long time.
