I’m mulling the idea of a trip Aug 21 - Sept 6 or so (flying into Rio from Miami with some side trips to SP and PA) but concerned about the press release from AA today that MIA-GIG service is resuming winter ‘21.

and I would say that is "no earlier than" winter '21 knowing American. If you have United miles or connections they may be more likely sooner but I think their flights will all be through Houston. https://hub.united.com/united-further-reduces-schedule-2645516655.html

UA also has EWR-GRU flights for sale in August with good award availability. Based in DC so may take advantage of that. Also, I misspoke re MIA-GIG on AA - press release said “Winter 2020”. Tempted to try my luck booking business class AA with Etihad miles (50k each way!) but LifeMiles is also 50k for UA business class so may just go with them if UA is more reliably going to operate the flights. Looking at Airbnbs in Ipanema right now and it’s crazy cheap!

Good idea. Business class is pretty wide open with miles now. Unusual.

Argentina from the very start "closed" until Sept 1st.....it seemed a bit harsh at the moment, not so much in retrospect.

Brasil is in worse shape than the USA....I wouldn't expect anything sooner, and if it is....why would you risk it, especially if you're in an "at risk"  group?

I booked Thailand and Indonesia for December,  flights and hotels all refundable.

Copa isn't flying ANYWHERE until Aug 7th...and that could be pushed out further

Oh, I am not going anywhere. However, other forum members seem to be considering traveling now. The current Brazilian ban for incoming foreigners dies on July 5th, if I remember well.

The airlines in Latin America seem to be going Humpty Dumpty one by one, implications for flights in context of bankruptcy, rendering the prospect of reliable in-country air travel unstable even if you can get to a hub. And Aeromexico now in bankruptcy ... I am not sure if bankruptcy = absolutely grounded for any of these carriers, but that workaround option for entering/leaving Brazil from North America may close. Bus travel arrangements for shorter distance, or just-in-time booking for longer domestic hauls once there, may be realistic if one is determined to be in Brazil.

I think it's a matter of what's Brazil got to lose ? The countries visitors are coming from are doing better. 

All this exclusion would have been nice back when the virus was first coming in but restrictions on travel now are like closing the barn door after 2 million horses have escaped. It's everywhere anyway.

Hawaii's opening up but my Bel Ami twins go home tomorrow after 4 months. Mexico could be appealing although I hear flights are from smaller airports (and the land border is closed).

Sure, there may be equitable case rates comparing Brazil with USA, the epidemiological mirroring figures seeming to justify reciprocal or even unilateral transplantation. As well, folks from ‘downcurve’ places may pose less contagion risk.

However, incoming visitors are among the least likely to follow local protocol because they are not cloistered in isolated monastery retreats. They simply add to the segment of the population that defies protective compliance or that cannot accommodate their country’s recommendations for mitigating spread.

A foreign national tourist from a place with less disease prevalence is as bad as the non-adherent Brazilian that stimulates case incidence, wilfully or by default. Importing more of those is not a strategy to be found in the infection control handbook. 

Better to send hay there than make hay there.

Yes! Favorite hobby during lock down, besides jerking off? Planning trips that you know you will have t cancel.

But researching, I have learned for instance that Medellin is one of the successful stories in the fight against the pandemic. One week in November would be perfect to recognize territory, and then make a decision about whether or not and where to travel for winter break.
