Guest fountainhall Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 To be hospitable with my smoking friends, I'll sit with them outside, and try to seat myself where my exposure is minimized. I have never smoked and I personally loathe the habit of smoking. I refuse to let anyone smoke in my apartment - friend or foe - because I know the smell will stick to soft furnishings for several days. Maybe this is because my father smoked 60 a day in the days of really heavy tar content. Not surprisingly perhaps, he died of cancer - and he was a doctor! How much second hand smoke I inhaled as a youngster, I hate to think. But you know what works wonders for me? If we are sitting outside and a friend asks if it's OK to smoke, I don't think I have ever said 'no'. It's a free world and some like smoking; others don't. As long as friends respect my choice on this issue and take the courtesy of asking, I'll generally respect theirs. Quote
Guest shebavon Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Why did hairstyles change? Because hair requiring a pound and a half of mousse or gel did not work well with the helmet's crushing weight. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I would have thought that much gel would have almost the same effect as a helmet. Quote
Gaybutton Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Indoor smokers, even if the bar or restaurant is empty, are just being rude and selfish people, who should be advised of what they are doing. Oh come on! Do you truly believe that smokers don't already know? Do you truly believe you can advise them about anything they are not already aware of? It isn't that they don't know. It's that they have no regard for others. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Or they are tired of being nice and still being treated like shit by insane non-smokers. It's the people who are fanatical about it that make a lot of smokers decide there is no point in being nice and they might as well light up. Quote
Guest buckeroo2 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I've been in bars where people were doing cocaine on the tables, sucking cock in the bathrooms and fighting in the next door alley, yet heard people say "we should call the police" when someone has tried to light up a cigarette. Someone else doing cocaine, sucking cock in the bathrooms and fighting in the next door alley is going to make my clothes smell rancid or give me cancer. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Dude the streets of bankcock are going to make your clothes smell rancid. Car exhaust and smoke are essentially the same thing. And there are tons of other carcinogens in the air - especially in Asia. I wish anti-smokers would stop ranting about health stuff and just admit they don't like the smell of smoke. I would have so much more respect for them. Quote

But happily I have been informed that very soon the inspectors will be showing up and doing the job the law requires. If you want to check on this just visit the government Health Center on Soi Bokow. According to what I was told, they plan on taking a close look beginning in Sunee Plaza since they have received complaints from that area. It was explained to me that each customer will be fined 2000 baht on the spot and that the bar will be fined 20,000 for each customer that is smoking. So if 3 people are smoking the fine is 60,000 baht. Also it will not be a "raid" where police storm the area but undercover investigators and that they will be coming from Alcohol and Tobacco control in Bangkok. So it seems to me that you and others can go on and on about his but the Thais themselves will take care of this. If you have a complaint, you should take it to Soi Bokow. All the postings in the world will not change this. Too much profit from fines to be made. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 The cops will call it "The Great Nicotine Caper Of 2009." Quote

Bar owners should decide and nobody else. Looking at Atri's remark should be reminder to all of why officialdom needs to be vigilent when the bar owner is not. Non-smokers have a right to smoke-free air inside, and it is the smoker who should be made to move. Many people would love to be able to smoke a joint or worse in a bar, but I don't see them doing it. Could it be because they are afraid of being prosecuted? Quote

Guest laurence Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 My sensitive nose smelled no smoke and I would find it hard to think that cigerette smoke would travel 10 yards in an outside environment. Not hard to believe! I can smell cig smoke 100 feet away. At the beach the smoke from puffers 10 yards or more is easily blown back into the faces of others. Quote

I believe that anyone who knows me would vouch for the fact that I'm very polite and accommodating when it comes to smoking. As a smoker, that's where I draw the line. I'm perfectly willing to step outside to smoke at bars, restaurants, and other enclosed venues. However, when I'm already outdoors I'm not so readily willing to be accommodating. At the beach, if my smoking is bothering you and you're sitting right next to me, I would probably put it out or move if I'm asked politely. However, if you're yards away from me, now you're going to be the one who has to move. Quote

It is the ones in front, even rows away, whose smoke is carried back by the sea breeze. And then there are the cigar smokers..... Quote
Guest Steve1903 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 There are rude or selfish or even downright stupid people on both sides of the smoking lobby. I dont want a smoker in the room when I'm out to lunch like most but when it gets to a situation like we have in a couple of areas of the UK which believe that children should not be adopted by people who smoke - leaving them to be brought up in a childrens home instead - then I can also see why smokers can get a bit fed up being preached at constantly. Guest MonkeySee Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Your friend sounds like a real drama queen. He needs to relax and lighten-up the load on his blood pressure. Sit him down and offer him a nice Marlboro red ... it's amazing how that helps people calm down. He is a drama queen when it comes to smoking cigerettes. Otherwise, he is a well respected lawyer in the community. Thank buddha, his wife does not smoke. He does relax and lighten-up when he has a dobbie. Seems that smoking a joint does not bother him at all. Go figure? Quote

I can tell you that people that smoke dobbies and Bogart them are the very worst kind of smokers. It is nice to share. Quote
atri1666 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 In other words, everyone should decide what is legal or illegal and what laws should be enforced or ignored? I not said! Dont change the words in my mouth! I am happy to be old enough to decide what places i like and what places i will avoid >>> and for this i dont need laws or spys I really hope there will come many controls and they will shut down many bars. No problem for me i already changed to singapore mainly - more and more fun in the last years and for free. Quote

I always read they had tough laws on littering, spitting, and on and on. Sure and they are much more harder. They have extreme punishments for people not obeying the law - but i am nonsmoker and so i dont care. I am always happy with the system in singapore because the police has power to take care about the criminals - not same like europe. I also travel already more than 20 years to singapore and never have had any problems there. Quote
Guest shebavon Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 All crying to obey the nonsmoking law i never hear cry to obey the law against prostitution? All only hypocritical brothers There is a world of difference between Smoking in an enclosed area and subjecting non-consenting forced participants to that smoke; and prostitution which is between consenting adults, and is essentially a victimless crime. I always wondered why it was illegal to charge for what is legal to give away. For one, I do not participate in the act of prostitution, but believe in being generous with my friends. Quote
Guest joseph44 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Last night a friend and I were out and about in Pattaya and noticed that more and more bars are ignoring the no smoking laws . I have tried to talk to some bar owners and managers where it is occurring with no results. So I thought today I would call the city help desk 1337 and find out how to report violations. The person that took my call after putting me on hold for awhile to check came back on line and told me to call the police at the following number: 038 420 802...5 She also told me to call the city managers office if the police did not go to check. So with this information and the names and location of some of the Sunee Plaza that are violating the law, I called. No answer. I tried for 10 minutes redialing all 3 numbers. No answer. I thought the call center must have given me the wrong number. So I went on line to check. The number was correct and I found additional numbers 038-428-223, 038 429- 371. I tried those numbers. Same thing. Despite my redialing each number for 10 minutes, No answer. Not giving up, I thought ok I will call the tourist police. I saw that they have a special 4 digit number 1155, but that number seems to be out of service. So after 30 minutes of trying to get someone to answer the phone I remembered that I saw a number on a no smoking sign that was in Thai. I went to check that number 025903342. Some one answered. Apparently is was the Alcohol and tobacco control number. Problem for me was they only speak Thai. So I decided that I would make up a petition. Get some people to sign it and submit it to the Mayor's Office and also see if I could get the press involved. Are there any other ideas? "Vote with my feet" is not an option. It is my hope to bring these violators to their knees!! Will you report the truck and pick up drivers, who pull up in a thick black smoke too? Will you report the people who burn their garbage along the side of the road too? Will you not travel by baht buses anymore? Will you sue the landlord for letting you stay in a condo or house with a filthy and contaminated aircon? I'm a smoker and I enjoy the smoke free places AND I enjoy the smoking areas created for us addicted people, but please, don't get excited so much about this minor issue. Just after longue cancer, heart failure is the next second cause of deaths. Quote
