On "Gay Boy Thailand" blog there is quite a revealing photo essay on the emergency exits at a popular gay night club in Bangkok. I must admit that I'm not always aware of adequate exits when I'm in a club. How do Pattaya bar's rate?

I'll have to plead ignorance for this one. Been in most of Pattaya's gay establishments but never once bothered with fire exit strategy. Guess I use the oldest tactics in the book ie. fingers crossed.

Frankly, I do not know of any Gay establishments (other than the open air ones) that meet western standards for fire safety (i.e. more than one exit).

As to DJ station, I have always felt that it is a disaster waiting to happen.

There are places in Pattaya that could be a problem in a fire...but there are places that are a problem in every jurisdiction.

Example would be upstairs at Happy Boy...sudden smoke added to an already pretty dark area, could make it hard to get out. Some of the places in Boystown could be a problem because of the depth of the building, and the distance from the entrance, I am sure many of these have rear exits, but they are not marked well, or porvided lighting.

I guess the best advice I can give you is "situational awareness"...in other works try to know where you are and what is around you..other than the boys!! If a fire happens, try to go to the closest exit and StAY DOWN...as in Crawl on the floor. If people are in a panic, try not to join them and stay down. The fire in going to "run" the ceiling, and then take a while for "flashover". Just move to the exit staying down. You don't have to be the first or fastest...Just the SMARTEST ... to get out of a bad situation.

This applies to every public occupancy or transportation. Once something happens it is too late to start figueing out where you are and how to get out....Plan Ahead!!!

On another thread, I expressed my fears about exiting DJ Station if there is a fire. Another poster said there were now several doors and he was less concerned. Those photos sum it all up - a death trap waiting to happen.

Apart from the exits to that club, the whole of Silom Soi 2 is a panic event waiting to happen. A fire in any of the establishments will send a wave of panic through all of them resulting in hundreds rushing to get out through that very narrow soi to Silom all at once. The imagination boggles at the number of deaths this will cause.

Apart from better and more strategically positioned exits, another fire safety remedy the authorities should consider is the fire resistance of the materials used inside the buildings. In any theatre in the west, the local fire authorities come on stage before the first public performance and literally use a lighter to try and set the drapes/props/sets alight. Only if fire fails to take hold will a license be granted to enable the show to take place. Using fire-retardant or treated materials and fabrics is not substantially more expensive, the more so when you consider the number of lives it will save.

If I would list venues that DO have adequate exits, sprinklers, smoke alarms I think it would be a very short list.

Last year after Xzyte had it's fire (thankfully early enough that no customers were there), I went in a month later and guess what??? Some of the fire exits were chained and locked.

The "finger crossed" method mentioned above is probably the best to hope for.

I asked a waiter at Boyz Boyz Boyz about an alternate exit rather than the front entrance and he told me that there is an exit to the outside via the Staff dressing room. So at least the staff will know how to escape. A few weeks ago, even before the Santika fire, I looked around a very crowded XRAY and asked about an emergency exit and the waiter just shrugged - he did not know or did not want to share his knowledge. As I was standing all the way in the back near the restrooms, I was very uncomfortable as there were several hundred patrons closer to the front entance than was I. I finished my one drink and left.
