Guest fountainhall Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 I have a better idea. Recognize the Cuban government and end the stupid trade and travel embargo. Not being American, the trade/travel embargo has always seemed to me the pettiest of actions by successive American governments. Domestic politics, I guess, and the importance of the Cuban-American vote. Much like the Jewish vote makes it impossible for the US to do anything but back up everything Israel gets up to. But there have been rumblings coming out of the Obama camp in recent days that something lis likely to happen re Cuba. Maybe, as KhorTose suggests, there will be an easing of relations and Cuban boys will become the hot new items. Sounds like a nice quid pro quo for the Rev. Rick Warren hiccup! Quote

I don't think you have to be an American to realize that the embargo is very petty and that the blind support of Israel needs to be questioned. I really liked your post fountainhall. Especially the second paragraph. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Thank you. I have never been to Cuba, but several friends have - and all loved their trip. It seems Cubans really are hot - and not just when on the beach or in the dance clubs Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 The problem is that you need to win Florida in order to become president and Florida is full of hard line Cuban exiles who will go batshit if the US lifts the embargo while either Castro brother is still alive. Quote

Are these the guys who operated the gambling franchises and were then put out of business by Castro? I thought that was mostly the Mafia. I guess perhaps they had their estates nationalised. I did not pay close attention to the November election results, but would Obama have lost without Florida? Something tells me he'd still have won. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 It's very hard to win without Florida. Obama could have done it, probably, but this was an exceptional year. It's not the gangsters - who were from Chicago - that still give a shit about Cuba. It's the Middle Class cubans and their children who are still insanely anti-Castro And there are tons of them and they vote largely as a singular block. When Fidel finally kicks the bucket and the parties start in the street you'll see just how many of them there are and just how crazy they are. Quote
