Guest Astrrro Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Sometimes it's nice to just have a quiet beer with friends without the hassle of the boys around. And for expats on a budget, low prices are always nice. I was looking through Nicky's Sunee map. Extremely well done but one ommission. The Minimart 24 across Soi VC from Forest House is a great place to watch the world go by. There's comfortable seating outside for about 10 and the beer is cheap. Acha is 20 baht, small Changs 25 baht, and large Changs are 40 baht. Soft drinks are only 15 baht. Check it out! Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 That is interesting idea. I have seen people sitting there in the past but did not think about it being such a good location to people watch until your post Astro. Enjoy Quote
Guest lester1 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Its also a place where less discerning farangs often sit who want to meet street life of all ages. Be careful who you strike a conversation up with. Plus, of course, it might be considered a bit of a defeat insofar as there might be more to life. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Plus, of course, it might be considered a bit of a defeat insofar as there might be more to life. Not sure what that's supposed to mean. Not at all a defeat for me. If I want to watch the world go by, and my world has no interest in underage boys why should I sit in Forest Bar and pay triple the price if I want a quiet drink with a mate? More prices: Small bottle SangSom 120 baht Small bottle Orange Label (is that Mekong?) 80 baht. Soda water 10 baht 1.25 litre Coke 27 baht Ice 6 baht Tip none expected. I'm an expat on a very tight budget. My self esteem does not improve by drinking at places I can't afford. Quote

As to your first point, that could apply to any bar or joint in Sunni. As to your second point,i presume that is in your view. Thanks very much for the info Astrrro Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Just want to clear one thing up. Rereading my post it may appear that I may have some axe to grind with the Forest Bar. Not so. I've sat there many times and enjoy the atmosphere. The prices are quite reasonable too. And no boy will sit with you uninvited but if you want to buy a boy a drink you can. I only mention it cause it's right across the soi. Somehow it just never occurred to me to sit across the street at Minimart 24, I guess cause it doesn't look like a bar. So despite having seen Minimart 24 dozens of times I was surprised how much I liked it when a friend brought me there and shocked at the low prices. Simple things make me happy. I don't wear jewelry, not even a wrist watch. If staying in a hotel I'm almost as happy in 2 Guys as the Amari. Of course, if they were the same price, I'd stay in the Amari, but they're not and a simple clean friendly place is really all I need. And I'm not suggesting that the ambiance of Minimart 24 is for everyone. But some of you may have walked by hundreds of times without thinking of it as a Sunee option so just wanted to put it on the radar. Quote

I for one, have walked by hundreds of times and never thought to stop and have a drink. I do like to watch the world go by and so will give it a go. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 without the hassle of the boys around. And for expats on a budget, low prices are always nice. I'm finding out this is not completely true. A street type, though looking of legal age, asked me for 20 baht. This happened when I was sitting alone but has not happened when sitting with friends. I saw another street kid ask some guy for 20 baht and he gave. Then it seemed a few seconds later he asked the same guy for 100 baht and he said no. I will never give some street urchin 20 baht but it's not about the 20 baht. I don't want these kids to know me and approach me because some might get the wrong idea. Once u give you'll always be asked IMO. Best to nip it in the bud and say no from day 1. Quote

Guest Astrrro Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 why should I sit in Forest Bar and pay triple the price if I want a quiet drink with a mate? In an effort to be "fair and balanced" some friends and I were in both Forest and Minimart 24 last night and of course Forest is the nicer place, softer lighting, more pleasing on the eye etc.. also if sitting on the Sunee side of Forest the boys in the rooms above CockTail will peek out the window and wave. I think you get what u pay for so it really depends on your budget. I've also found the My Mic Bar next door to Forest a good place extremely late in my drunken wanderings if I see a boy outfront and bring him inside, seems private as I might be the only customer at 3AM. But My Mic is not the best bar if one's main objective is to have a drink with friends as it cannot match the ambiance of a place like Memories or the price of Minimart 24. Anyway, all the places above beat Boystown by a country mile IMHO. Quote
