Argentina and Rio de Janeiro July 2019

Hello everyone. As usual, planning for my trips in advance. Actually, I am leaving to Buenos Aires on June 25th. As Argentina is well known territory, I am not planning for it. But during my staying in Buenos Aires, I will spend one week in Rio. THAT is unknown territory, it would be my first time there.

I already have the tickets. I decided to rent an airbnb instead of going to a hotel. That decision on which one is not yet made, I am waiting for some suggestions from sister @numazu1, who is too busy hanging out with Brazilian boys and has abandoned us but still chats in WhatsApp, and sends teasing pictures all the time.

If anyone is going to be around, let me know if you want to meet. My plan is very simple. Writing and networking in the morning, beach at noon and early afternoon, sauna in the evening. Any tips about other things to do will be very appreciated. I do not think I would leave Ipanema/Copacabana area. For instance, I have zero interest on visiting the Cristo.

Take in Lapa on a Friday late eve around 10ish or a little after.  Loads of locals in all of the streets; it's virtually a fun fest.  Try to go with a local or locals.  Take in Santa Teresa; ride that dingy or cable car which was out of commission due to the occurrence of a very tragic accident.  ...was down for more than two years.  Walk up/down those beautiful, famous titled steps from Lapa to ST or vice versa.  Try to have a companion or go during the daytime.  If you don't mind paying a mint-- do a helicopter ride over Rio within a short period of time.  There are two drawbacks: the cost and the length of time.  I did it twice: once with a tour guide of my own choosing who also escorted but preferred the latter to the former.  He honored my plans; I enjoyed everywhere we went.  Unfortunately, he lost both legs to a horrendous motorcycle accident: a public transit bus ran into him.  Miss him....  Go to those fabulous gardens, name escapes me.  I went alone and did not like it, for it was great when I went with my traveling partner.

If you do the copter ride-- take it from the Botofogo area.  There's a nice restaurant that's very near--.  My friend and I dined there before hopping into the copter.  I took lots of photos from the air.  You must do Sugar Loaf; it's quite interesting while going up; it's fantastic once you reach the top.  If time allows-- have dinner up there one evening and watch the sun going down.

Those are a few things that I can think of which you perhaps would enjoy during your stay there, and they are not that touristy per se.

I’m going to Rio for the first time as well in December, I’m interested in seeing how the men of Rio compare to those of Santo Domingo and if it’s worth the extra money to head out there.  I hope you come back with a full report!

@Kevie770 If you can, you should probably go the end of December and try to bring in the new year there. We were there Jan 1st - 8th of this year and it was mind blowing. The garatos come from all over Brazil and the men are plentiful and sculpted like statues. The saunas have wall to wall men and the clients/customers in the saunas are so friendly. We were blessed to have a VERY NICE Airbnb host who sat with us and told us to come back to ring in the new year in 2019-2020. We booked his place while chatting with him for December 26th 2019. My hubby and I aren't Into the circuit scene or parties and they are plentiful during that time. you dont have to be into the parties to have a GREAT TIME in Rio during that time. In my unofficial opinion, the guys in Rio are much sexier than the DR. Only because their bodies will have you in awe. when you think you've seen the most sexiest guy in Rio, a sexier guy will walk past you and you will forget about the first guy you saw a second ago. It will have you scratching your head. During new years eve there is a never ending parade of sexy guys all over ipanema and copacabana. My Airbnb is already booked. I have a few apps on my phone now watching the flights for new years eve. Download hopper and skyscanner to your phone and it will monitor flights and let you know when the prices change. Be prepared though, my friend. There is no other place for a horny gay man to be but Rio during new years eve. Take plenty of condoms and lube. YOU WILL NEED THEM.

Reveillon (New Years Eve) and Carnaval are the most expensive times for lodging in Rio. The High Season, their summer (December to beginning of March) has increased prices, and the weeks  to two weeks of Reveillon and Carnaval, the prices are even higher.

If Kevie’s major concern was cost compared to the DR, as he seemed to suggest, then that period (even without the difference in airfare) could be prohibitive. A low season (not during their summer) visit would be much less expensive. And it also would not be as crowded.

Well, for sure I will report on my adventures and misadventures with Rio men, but I have never been to the RD and cannot make comparisons.

I was definitely confusing you with @BlkSuperman.  But he definitely gave me the exact info I was looking for! Also how much higher are prices during peak season?  I know it will be more expensive than SD but how much more? I usually pay about $60-$70 a night for an Air B&B and it seems as if the guys are similarly priced.  Im not super into the party scene but I will definitely plan on going out for at least a few nights.  What is rio like during the off seasons?  I was going to do one week in Rio, 3 days in Salvador and 3 days in SP.

@Kevie770 the prices for airbnb and hotels are more than double the price during peak season. For example in April I tried to book 4 different airbnb for next year's carnaval. Originally all my reservations had been accepted by each host. About a day or 2 later each of the hosts notified me that they didn't realize it was the week of carnaval and my rate would increase. Each reservation had more than doubled, a few tripled,  in price. Again, for the flights I use apps on my phone and they notify me when the cost of flights change.

Last June was the 1st time my hubby and i visited Rio and we paid about $1600 round trip pp. I was so blown away by what transpired on our first visit so we decided to go again 4 weeks later and paid about $1800 pp for the flight only. When it isn't peak season the apartments on airbnb are very affordable, in fact they're cheap as hell. The flight will leave a huge hole in your budget.

My husband and i always get the seats on american airlines DIRECTLY BEHIND PREMIUM ECONOMY! Although you're in coach seating, if you get the seats directly behind premium economy then You will get more leg room. A good buddy of mine flew with us in March of this year and said he was miserable the entire trip because he had no leg room where he was sitting in Coach. He was actually sitting in the middle of two strangers. he dreaded taking the long, uncomfortable flight home.

We snagged tickets for $681 for on our last trip to rio in March and were fortunate to get tickets for the same price for our upcoming visit in 4 weeks. Do yourself a huge favor and download HOPPER, SKYSCANNER, GOOGLE TRIPS AND SKIPLAGGED to your phone. these apps will monitor flights you're interested in and notify you when the price changes. Once you get the alert that the price has dropped for your trip NEVER BOOK through those sites. ALWAYS GO DIRECTLY to the airline site and book your ticket as you can still save a few more bucks by doing so.

As far as the guys in the peak and off season, it will be as you would expect. Peak season brings wayyyyyy more guys than the off season, but let me tell you my friend, our first trip was during the off season and there were plenty of sexy brazalian men in those saunas. We went twice last year during the off season and were in "gay man's heaven," both times during the off season.

If you can, try to find an airbnb in the Ipanema area on your visit. If not, Copacabana is pretty nice also. Also, rent the orange itau bicycles for a month and ride along the beach. If you're going to be there for a week, its cheaper to rent the bikes for the month than renting them daily. Additionally, stop by BLAME IT ON RIO travel. The owner is American and well-known in rio. he can set up a lot of tours and other activities for you. He's super friendly and you can exchange your money there also.

I absolutely concur with Kevie770.  I've been to the Dominican Republic only one during this century and to Brazil over eleven times-- the last being in 2011, much too long.  OverallI,  I too thought the men in Brazil to be much hotter than those I viewed and met while in the DR.  But it doesn't hurt to travel to a variety of places to experience and appreciate and enjoy!

Take in stride and make the better of the situation!      I  Brazil!     I  Rio!

New Years is fun in Rio, the largest NYE celebration in the world. However, I don't go to saunas about 2-3 days after Christmas until the middle of January.

The saunas are SOOO full , that the wait for a room is ridiculous and with so many tourists (nationals as well as foreigners). The boys ask higher than normal and stick to their high price, for the most part. And is very frustrating when you really like someone and he's taken with two more waiting for him.

The first three weeks of December has been some of my best times in saunas....people thinking about Christmas, business is slow. The boys need money to buy presents for whomever, hardly any tourists....they are hungry for business and really try to earn it. Rooms/apts are cheaper....overall your money will go a lot further.

I'm 6'3.  The last time that I flew to Rio de janeiro from Miami although my base point was San Francisco to Miami-- I had to fly business class because on previous trips-- the flights from MIA to GIG via Coach were "friggin" killers, especially if the pricks occupying the seats directly in front of me lower theirs to the max.

They are not pricks. The airlines trying to save space are.

Depending on which airlines you are flying with, you may be able to request a bulkhead or exit row seat in economy class for free or for a fee, these seats have much better leg room.

Arrived to Buenos Aires his morning. A car from Ezeiza to Recoleta was U$S 36 (AR$ 1,550). he guy did not help me ro carry my bag and so I did not tip him. I did not start yet fucking, but I could not avoid diving in delicious food. These prices are from a fancy French place where I had lunch today, not chip for local standards.

I am trying to see Carlos Aleman tomorrow. He is now retired from the local market, frustrated at the complaints about his rate (he is asking for 3K, which at nowadays currency is U$S 70). I am not sure yet whether or not we will meet, as I do not have much time before leaving to Corrientes. I am actually planning on a fest of local providers when I return from Rio, the last two weeks of July.

Done with family for the day, and waiting for the debates to start. Tomorrow I fly to Corrientes. While I wait, here yo have a preliminary report on local providers.

Rentmen here shows rates. The standard price targeting visitors seems to be U$S 100, but there are a few guys asking for 200/300, and even one at 400. However, a couple of guys who hit me in Grindr asked for just AR$ 1,500. I do not know whether or not knew I am coming from the USA, but my profiles there are written in English. In the local forums, clients seem to be happy with rates in the 1,500/2,000 range.
