Gaybutton Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I see that the exchange rate for the US dollar has broken 35 baht today. Maybe 36 by New Years??? The rate I'm seeing shows the baht closed at 34.77 today. But let's hope it works out as you say. Only a couple days ago it looked like it was going to go back into the 33's. If it reaches 35 on the sites I check, I'll start posting the daily rates again. Monday's opening should be an interesting one. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I think the dollar is going to go weirdly up and down until people figure out what Obama is really going to do for the American economy. Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I think the dollar is going to go weirdly up and down until people figure out what Obama is really going to do for the American economy. I think that will be one important factor. I think two other important factors include the Chinese economy and the stability (or lack thereof) of the Thai government. I feel sorry for the Thai people who are going to suffer as a result of all that's been going on, but I have to admit that if a side effect is a better exchange rate for us farang, then I certainly would have no objection. PattayaMale Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 I have read in the last 2 days that China is going to try and make the Yuang the international currency. I only thing that may delay this is if China can stay stable as a state. If the economy in China tanks, there might be great unrest. We live in very interesting times. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I think two other important factors include the Chinese economy and the stability (or lack thereof) of the Thai government. Judging solely from what I see on TV and read in the press (no guffaws, please!), the Chinese appear to be doing everything right - so far - in trying to stablise their economy. Perhaps taking the US experience into account, they are also moving much faster. But the massive loss of jobs in the manufacturing industries will put a huge strain on the state's ability to retain control. And from the same media outlets, the Thai economy seems to be better able to weather the storm than many others. Where that will leave the Baht v. the US$, I have zero idea. I think the Baht and the dollar are both going to see-saw for quite a time. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 China's economy is very dependent on exports - which may decline as the UK, US and EU economies continue to falter. Guest fountainhall Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 China's economy is very dependent on exports - which may decline as the UK, US and EU economies continue to falter. They have already seen a massive decline in recent months with many millions thrown out of work. That's why the government is now spending vast sums to try and stimulate domestic demand. Let's hope for the sake of the world economy they succeed! Quote

Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 This afternoon I got 34.89 at ATM from my US bank. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 The exchange rate is like a lottery. Quote
Guest Steve1903 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 The UK£ has taken a hammering this year. Sadly for us brits my own opinion is that it will fall yet further in value in the coming year. Tough times ahead. Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 The fluctuations seem to be posted 3 or four times a day. When the dollar was weaker I was sending 3.8 million baht out of the country from a sale of a property. From the time I started the transaction (showing the correct paper work and having it checked) I lost about $500 as the baht strengthened. I protested politely saying they had told me a better rate when we started the transaction. They showed me the conversion sheet they just received. I just sat in silence for a few moments and the man doing the transaction said, "ok" and gave me a little bit better rate. Quote
Guest MonkeySee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I see that the exchange rate for the US dollar has broken 35 baht today. Maybe 36 by New Years??? I have not seen it at 35 since the airport closure, but it is getting close. It was 34.80 for traveler's checks the other day. It won't make it to 36 by New Years but maybe back to 35. Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 It won't make it to 36 by New Years but maybe back to 35. The US dollar exchange rate opened at 34.74 at 8:00am today (December 29). 25 minutes later it moved to 34.78. At this moment it's 9:35am, but the next round of exchange rates has not yet been posted. Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 I want to thank GB for staying on top of this, but geese I hope he can get out to the beach or take a walk instead of being glued to the exchange rate. I had this vision of him sitting at Bangkok Bank with his web enabled mobile phone reporting every time the baht changed, which I appreciate. But since I told my Thai friend that I could not buy him a New Years present unless the rate hit 35..............I hope it does not break 34.9 until Jan 2. Quote

Best resource is the actual rate schedule as posted by the banks daily... as GB has been posting the Bangkok Bank rates of the day. The banks give you less than Yahoo quotes...as they must make a profit I guess ??? Oh well...hopefully we will see rising US $$$ / THB rates into 2009 :-) to 39 per Kasicorn Securities analysts is their opinion...good for US$...bad for THB. tj Quote
