Spacey Strikes Back

Recommended Posts

Spacey WAS House Of Cards.  He left, the ratings tanked, the reviews were merciless.  I love Robin Wright, but she wasn't fit to carry that show.

As for the charges, the kid told Spacey (as per his mother) that he was 21 at the time of the incident.  I wonder how many guys here would be in the slammer if the same thing was said to them by a legally underage guy.

I'm going to hold off on judgement until this thing shakes out in court.

Spacey is wealthy and doesn't need to work another day. But, as an artist, this video reminds us that he has a talent. To cut off that talent so abruptly must hurt a lot. He talks about people rushing to judgment without any facts, without any evidence. He plays a character rather than himself. Why?

The statements of his multiple accusers are evidence. Whether it's he said, she said doesn't matter. Statements are admissible in court, where they might be established as facts. That's the benefit of a public trial where a person who said something must now bring the facts that support it. They get cross-examined, and their statements are entered only in accordance with the rules of law. No hearsay, for example.

So Spacey is right that no facts have been established. But we do have multiple statements. Most of those will never see a courtroom due to the statue of limitations. But people are entitled to their opinions, whether based on a statement or a fact. Too bad for him, because the statements alone, even outside a court of law, cumulatively make a case against Spacey that many, if not most, find credible.

So there are courts of law and courts of public opinion. He's already lost in the latter. It will be interesting to see if he takes the latest case all the way to trial.

Do you think he has lost the court of public opinion in the gay arena?

I am not sure. What I do know is that the gay arena is full of guys without a clean conscience who love pointing fingers and blaming others. You should take a look at the other site and see how often this happens. I am always surprised, when I defend boytoy, on how outraged they are at the very name of this website. Many times I have used the word "boy' in my report meaning a young man, considering that many 50 y.o. men call themselves boys. Many times I was astonished at the number of posters confronting me and asking me to redact my post. The only time that I edited a post not because of spelling issues but because of content,  I was a newbie and was confronted about this.

After that and once I became more knowledgeable of the ropes, I laughed at their concerns every time they had an issue with me talking about playing with my boys.

This has been a debate for years. They initially did not like the name MaleEscortReview.com. Why? It was not the site they wanted to go to. Now there is an issue with the word boy.  However, every one of them that have that issue was OK with the word Rentboy.  IMHO no difference.

But, you are right, many will not give Spacey a second chance.  I will and not because he is a great actor (he is) but because he has not been proven to be guilty of anything yet. Yes, he made advances.  Yes, he was a prick at times. But, does it rise to the level of career ending?  Not from what I have heard. But, perhaps I have not heard the whole story.

I don't know what Spacey will have to do to win back the confidence of the public. I'd hate to see us lose a very talented gay actor because he groped an 18-year old. But, just as in the MeToo movement, some people are out for blood. Nothing short of castration will satisfy them. For me, if he is convicted, he should serve his time, pay his fine, and make amends to the boys he offended. If did that sincerely, I would welcome him back into the theater.

As for gay men, my guess is that many of us have acted inappropriately at times. There was an era when open gay sex was being celebrated, and we did just that. Numerous underage guys have hit on me. I politely resisted. I remember being at a party with a date and a thirteen year old kept begging me for sex. I said I was with someone. He replied, we can go do it and be back before he knows you are gone! Actually, no, we couldn't.

But many teens had already come to grips with their sexuality. A lot sooner than I ever did. What were they expected to do for sex? The law says and said then that we cannot indulge them. It must be tough to have a teenagers raging hormones and no outlet but your hand.

Vox Article on the over 30 allegations against Kevin Spacey

I think it's pretty clear to me that Kevin used his position and his power inappropriately at the very minimum. I am not at all OK with straight men doing this, so why would I be OK with Kevin doing it? Being Gay doesn't give you a free pass to be an asshole.

I may be an asshole for saying it, but I'm OK with a few people's careers going up in smoke to teach folks that this kind of behavior is not OK.

He has had the money and success to rent anything (of age...) he wants.  When your reputation, career, or whole life is on the line, why not just do that?  So much safer and you can get everything you want instead of some groping or head at best.  At his level you add on NDAs, sure, even then there'll be rumors and gossip, but no jeopardy.

Because he's a narcissistic asshole who enjoys taking advantage of people, and the sex (and sexuality) are secondary to the power play.

I mean, we've seen a couple good people #metoo'd but it seems fairly obvious Spacey wasn't one of them.

If he gets through the suits though, no reason he can't continue to play the sleazy ego-maniacal bad guy he mostly always plays.  We'll just know why he's so believable.

Wow! What a deep knowledge of all the circumstances and of Spacey's character. You sound like experts...

...on blaming others, specially if they are more talented and successful than you are. I am sure it feels good.

No, actually, it doesn't feel good.

It sucks that a gay icon like Kevin Spacey did this. But pretending it didn't happen doesn't change the fact that he did these things. One or two people might make up stories. But 30+? I don't think so.

Defending this behavior is an insult and attack on the people he did it to. If it was a straight man who had done these things, I'm pretty sure everybody here would be condemning him...

I am choosing to believe the 30+ people who have accused him.

You are choosing not to believe them. You can put a fine point on calling them liars, but by choosing not to believe them, that's what you're doing. It's the exact same bullshit that senate republicans pulled with Brett Kavanaugh.
