When I travel in less developed countries, I try to act with restraint while being generous in inviting guys to dinner or to accompany me on trips. But it is difficult: what we see as moderate expenditure, they may view as a fortune.

Just a quick check-in. Starting my 6th! trip to Brazil today. São Paulo, Salavador, Rio. Currently at Guarulhos waiting for my Uber. The airport is full of families waiting for their loved ones to arrive.

And the place is pandemonium. I’ve had 6 Uber cancellations. My friend whose place I’m staying for a few days tried to call a driver for me using the 99 ride share app (never heard of it) and even he got cancelled on.

Finally got an Uber on my 7th try and he still got stuck in traffic. Muito cheio aqui:

There’s rain forecasted for throughout the holiday weeks ahead for SP and Rio. Hopefully it’s not too much of a buzzkill.

The airport express bus is a good alternative if uber and taxi fail.

Day 10: Business up front, Party in the Back

As far as I know the majority of the direct flights from Brazil to the USA (Miami, Atlanta, New York, Houston, LAX) depart at night. I don’t know if I like this schedule or not. On the one hand it is pretty cool to have late night departures because you can have a last minute victory lap at the sauna before heading out to the airport. But on the other hand I do feel a little bit of anxiety throughout the majority of the day of the flight. I've always lived in mortal fear of missing my flight, anywhere I am. Having to wait for it all day, even if I was doing something fun, kind of takes away from the fun because I keep checking my cellphone for the time.

After the aquarium we get back Shopping Cidade on Paulista to have our late lunch, and then strolled on Paulista, since today was Sunday and the street is closed to cars so pedestrians and bicyclists can have free reign over the popular street.

At 2:30 PM we headed back to the hotel to pack, shower and say our intimate goodbyes before we both head to the sauna. Thank goodness for late check-out at the Intercontinental. United offers more than a dozen flights a day from Houston (IAD) to Rio (GIG). 

However, there is only one non stop flight each day which is twice the cost of the other flights. 

With the other flights, the aircraft are smaller and are usually not UA but instead, a Star Alliance partner.  Most of the smaller flights transfer through Panama

The one non stop is flight number 129 - and it has Polaris.

Last update for the year. Since I can catch my breath to actually sit down and relax at the beach...

Arrived in Rio from Salvador yesterday and boy the whole city is bursting with activity for the New Year’s celebrations. Eye candy everywhere! Even an innocent trip to the supermarket at midnight was a jaw dropping experience. The streets are filled with people even at night.

We stayed up too late last night so only got up to go to the beach at 1:30 pm, but the sun is strong and the boys are hot, so it’s all good. The city is bracing for tonight’s Festivities, with both signage and police presence:

I was just offered upgrades this morning for a trip in a few weeks with United  -Houston to Rio and return São Paulo to Houston, and both have Polaris. I’m actually excited to try these legs out as my one Polaris experience which was Boston to San Francisco was pretty positive.

Thanks axiom. Debating on whether to write a new trip report or not. Didn’t go to saunas as much as I wanted to this trip, but it was a life changing experience regardless. I’m leaning towards yes.
