The Other Forum Closing

So the other site's owner is shutting down the forum for the month of December.  Probably not the smartest thing to do when you are begging for money because your reserves are down to 16 percent.  Get ready and fire up the reserve computers, things are going to get busy here.

Why shutting down?

He never gave a shit about anything but himself, certainly not what it does to the community every time he'd pull that shit, or people that may need to reference the posts in the travel sections at that time...

They have a staff?  I guess I won't be reading there in DEC or JAN through NOV either.

Best regards,

RA1

One of these times he'll either not come back or they'll get tired of his shit...

That's one way to keep the Grinch at bay.

No board can truly survive if the board's owner is broke, his health is failing, his volunteer "staff" are idiots, and there's never been a viable, reliable plan to build financial resources. In my neck of the woods they call this: bad business.

Thank goodness and merry Christmas there's an option.

LOL! I really enjoyed that laugh. Daddy claims to be this I.T. genius (who can never seem to find enough work). His board is run by vBulletin software. It doesn't get more basic than that. You'd think he was running Tesla. Daddy uses the word "upgrade" as a smoke-and-mirror shield to make it look like he's working to earn donations. In the meantime, can you see these upgrades? Can you feel them? I didn't think so. He doesn't even know how the Time-Outs appear to users. LOL!

Daddy reminds me of the old fat guy with a huge beer gut, who complains when he drops something because he's too fat to bend down and pick it up.

The "staff" needing "time off" is SO LAUGHABLE. These drama queens take themselves so seriously.

Many of us are creatures of habit. Bad habit. It's human nature. But once you discover the joy of "no begging," and the joy of x-rated photo uploads, not to mention the joy of no deej, there really is no looking back (except to poke fun and steal a little chuckle).

One can hope.

The cynic in me says it could be a ploy...to get more money out of members who fear losing their playpen.

I suspect they just had a huge drop without all the catfights. Marylander keeps trying to pick one and I see Kenny lasted 1 day.

I dont know how they plan to start back up after a month .Never happened afaik

IIRC there was a significant break a few years ago.  Remember the "gone fishing" message?  That's when I first registered here.

They've shut down numerous times. For us old-timers, and I can't believe I'm calling myself that, the term was "meltdown." I may be mistaken, but I think the meltdowns began while Hooboy was alive, nearer to the end of his life. There were several in the early Daddy days. The Rico blog and that disaster EscortSpeaks made fun of the meltdowns, and it was funny reading.

Once again, it seems like that board has a troll problem. This time in their Politics Forum. You can probably blame it on Trump, who is the QUEEN of TROLLs. There's an easy way to fix a troll problem, but that requires work. Daddy is way too lazy and disinterested to work that hard. Ditto for the mods.

So it's the same old, same old tired routine. With very little profit dollars to justify the frayed nerves. And the beat goes on...

it's vbulletin, dump the db, upgrade and fucking restart.  They actually have good support and well baked procedures.

Absolute worst case, just setup a new instance of it and load the DB.  It's not like he's running [H]ard|Forum and limited by IO or CPU.  A damn PIII would serve that site just fine.

I just signed in to make the announcement, and was going to title the threat "BE READY FOR ANOTHER WAVE". You were faster.

Daddy shared in La Cabana (a forum with access restricted to those of us who support the site financially) a link to the upgrade he is working on. Nothing radical, but a significantly more contemporaneous design.

He may also be baking something else in the oven. During the gathering in Palm Springs he shared about widening the scope of Daddy's Reviews beyond escorts. He was envisioning something like a yelp for older gay men (my analogy, not his) with reviews of spas, hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. This week he posted this in his home page:

"Las Vegas, NV — Yesterday I told you that traffic is down about 20% and my theory of what is happening. It's time to start doing what I've wanted to do since I took over the website.

If you look on the very first page it says: "Dedicated to reviews of interest to Mature Gay Gentlemen." I fit in that category, and all my life I've had problems finding good places to visit. When I first started out, being Gay was illegal in every single state and territory in the United States.

Now that I'm an old and slow moving Gay man, I find that I still want to go visiting. But most of all I need to know that I'll be safe and comfortable. That's where you come in. I reviews on places to go. The resorts in Palm Springs. The infamous P-Town, The exciting Florida Keys. Your favorite Website.

I know that the submit form is more oriented to our favorite hobby but just make it work for now and know that my plans are to have three types of reviews (or more if we need them) Escorts, Venues, and Websites. If we can start building a library of these types of reviews then hopefully I can start attracting the LGBTQ advertising that is needed."

Yes yes yes.

in today's DevOps world, a successful 'upgrade' implementation is instantaneous.

'Daddy' is living in the Age of Steam Power, computationally speaking.
