Today, 18 Dec., the NY Times published a photo of the new Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, paying his respects to His Majesty by prostrating himself in front of HM. Or rather, a portrait of HM!

HE is not there in person. Why? A message to the Thai people?

Perhaps HE is ill? Perhaps the end is near? Perhaps He does not want to appear in person with the new PM? HE did not make his annual message to the Thai people upon his birthday; and now this. I do not know, but the symbolism is significant.

Or perhaps I am reading or seeing too much into the photo of the new PM paying his respects to a portrait?

I think you may be reading too much into this laurence. His Majesty has been ill and is recovering. It is not unusual for people to show their allegiance to the King this way. It is part of a legal process that must be followed.

The King can not appear at every function so a picture is often used, even when the King is well.

It would be nice to see the King feeling well enough and I hope that prosperity returns to the Kingdom soon

Wow! You guys are quick to respond. And I do hope you are correct in your assessment. It just seemed so odd to me to see some one bowing in front of a portrait, not that it is that uncommon in churches, etc.

Apparently, you are not in Thailand and don't understand the Thais very well.

Well, no, not in LOS at the minute, and for sure, do not understand Thais very well. Wait and see, time will tell.
