Bangkok Fun Diminished?

Caeron's experience makes me wonder if Bangkok is much fun anymore. A post on gaythailand by Michael was also not encouraging. I have been there 15 times over the years, and certainly in the beginning (1987) it was a blast. Now it seems all money-oriented, giving as little as possible for the highest rate. Boys lazy in bed, such as the Tawan guy. The innocence seems gone for good, and that was part of the attraction. I used to think the guys were glad to be chosen and eager to please. There was no race to the door when finished either.  Am I wrong?

I’m mixed on this.   I have no problems with Bangkok.  I love it and have lots of fun.   You mention reading all the negativity. That’s the people posting.   Many of forum members I know from here and Gaythailand have stopped posting because as soon as we say how much fun we are having, posters come on and post all their negatives. . 

I always ask these people if everything is that bad why do you keep going.   For me it’s still a big bargain.   Every night is different.  Right now is the middle of the low season. It’s not going to be wall to wall boys or customers.    I was talking to a friend tonight that stopped by Screwboys. Said it was full so he left and stopped in at Maxis. 3/4 full.    

So I’ll only speak for myself.  I see very little wrong and will continue to spend my 6 months a year there having a great time.

I'll be in Thailand in September for 4 weeks with stops in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and completing my holiday in Bangkok.  Right now I am still booking my hotel rooms and I am starting to notice how many webpages have vanished that once provided plentiful information on Thailand...  Board like Thailandout.com, Gaypattaya.com, Dreadedneds, stickeyrice and others.  

Luckily, I have a good knowledge of Thailand so I know the area's I want to stay but getting info on bars is not as easy as it use to be.

My trip last year was filled with fun and I only had to put in a little effort.  Meeting guys on the beach or on the apps was like ordering out for pizza delivery.  The gogo bars were fun.  If I went into an expensive bar, I had my drink, looked over the guys wearing little to nothing and tipping a few if the mood hit me.  Most nights my bed was occupied by friends or new friends I met on the street or guys I met on the apps.  I go to the bars to look and tip.  If the bar is offering reasonable drink prices, I will sit with a few staff and tip and share a drink with them.  In Sunee I may open a bottle, get 1,000 baht changed into 1,000 baht broken down into 20 baht notes.  I tend to give out tips till the money and the bottle is gone.

At a few of the other bars I play tipping games with the guys (I only do this in Sunee).  I love to flirt with the guys but flirting with them was a lot different 15 years ago when I had a harder gym body and it was also kinda nice being the exotic gay black american when they were very few in Thailand.  I still get a guys that are interested only to be able to say they had sex with a black guy and I let them have their way with me! 

I only tend to go to Thailand in low season and I have met some great guys!  Will this time be fun?  Oh yeah!

There are still amazing places in Thailand and much more to do than ever but the scene is evolving. Online meets are gaining steam. Still many boys in Gogo bars and many in massage parlors but they have never been tons of twinks in either in Bangkok.  I like twinks. Pattaya is better for that. But, still, as the bars change, others open up that fill the void. I have yet to find anywhere on earth you can go and find 500 guys working in different bars right next to each other.

I've gone to Bangkok probably a dozen times in the last 15 years or so, including 2-3 times with my boyfriend (at the time).  Of course, the solo trips were more fun in terms of experiencing the local boys.  haha  I can't say that I've noticed much of a difference in that time though.  I usually have hired from the gogo bars but I've had good experiences in massage parlors and online (both free and paid).  Had a great threesome with two boys from one of the gogo bars - mindblowing experience!  And another great experience on the last day of my last trip - a very hot session with a Japanese guy there for business (Grindr hookup).  It was the fantasy-cum-true experience of "my hotel door is open and I'm on my bed with my ass up for you"

I'm sorry if my posts implied I didn't have fun. I had a blast. But over the years I've gotten more picky and direct about what I want, and if I don't see it, I move on.

Straight guys watching porn on their phone is hardly a phenom unique to Thailand. I'd just never had the experience. I'm quite sure most of the guys who fuck me are straight, but they're young and horny and do just fine. 

That said, I will see what my first experience in Rio is like. My guess is I may find I like it better if I can afford the airfare from rainy Oregon...

No worries.  I understand what you mean.  I did have a guy in Bangkok who was clearly straight and wanted to watch str8 porn to get off.  While it was a bit disappointing, I knew prior to hiring; sex wasn't the primary motivation behind the hire (that's a story for another day lol). 

And the prices are rising too.  It's frustrating when the going rate for an erotic massage is around the price I used to pay (and still can pay in many cases) for the "full experience".  And I'm not talking about the high end spas either.  The little spas with no amenities, a ratty towel and a trickling shower have guys who want 1500-2000 Thai Baht for a bad massage and a handjob.  It's definitely "buyer beware" out there. 

I've had several guys promise they can do "everything I want, no problem" (and I'm clear in advance, too) but when we start the action, things change.  It's only happened a couple of times but it's still annoying.  

For the most part, I've had great experiences though.  I've learned a lot in my travels and I tend to be very clear in my expectations.  I even have a document on my phone that has pics and descriptions in English (for me!) and several other languages (French, Spanish, Japanese and Thai at this point) to show the guy what I'm into.

My experience with Bangkok began in 1987, and I do long for the seemingly innocent era that I enjoyed. There were fewer games played. Guys were eager to play, grateful to be chosen. Making the customer happy was the goal. Prices were quite low.  300 baht at the time was $14 US dollars. Some guys asked 400, which is still quite low. I am not suggesting that one takes advantage of the boys by paying the low price, and I am glad that the guys are getting paid better now. It's just the contrast with how good their attitude was then despite the low pay. There is a different experience when the guy you pick seems quite happy to go with you and stays that way. They didn't get to the room and  demand more or do less than they said at the bar.

I believe that I have always been generous when the price was low, but it was the same thing then "You are undercutting the locals when you pay too much!"

I guess if by locals , you mean ex pats then certainly that could be true . Certainly not true from real locals.  One of differences between Brazil and Thailand. In Brazil most of the customers are really locals.

I too have been going to Thailand for the last 10 years, but have not hired boys for the last 3 years, and it's rare that I hookup with guys from grindr there, perhaps because my type has changed.  What I enjoy most these days in Thailand is the 5 star hotel services, spa, massage and the food.  They are still very good value for the price.  I still go to boy bars for the shows, and also gay dance clubs in Bangkok,  but I find the party scene at DJ and G BKK are quite mediocre compare to Brazil and Europe, (but still better than other Asian cities.)

Can you describe a bit more about why the scene is mediocre to Brazil and Europe?  Quality of clubs? Number of people? Type of people?  Trying to learn more about the scene there.  Thanks!

I think the gay scene is diminished in all areas. However, for Thailand, there are tons of gogo bars and tons of boys. The fun is still there but not what it was 10 years ago.  The Internet has changed every scene permanently.

Very simple.  The party crowd in BKK are too sober and reserved for me.  It's  their culture and I used to appreciate those qualities.  But I now prefer partying in crazy and horny crowds where no police conduct drug raids into private establishments. And, nudity and public orgy are common things at the clubs, e.g.  Brazil, Amsterdam, Barcelona and many other cities.

I guarantee that you will have more fun (Sexually) in Brasil. The exchange rate is now 4-1, which means a round of sex , REALLY good sex will cost you about 25usd. Plus hotel and apt rates have dropped quite a bit.

If I ever do return to Thailand, will be for a connection going somewhere else.... been going to BKK for 20 yrs...sometimes 3 or 4 times a yr (good mileage run trips), However, on my last trip I said to myself ...and to others, is not as much fun as before...sadly.

I did have a blast in Rio. I will be going back, not sure when, but a lot of fun.

It was more 'raw' than Bangkok, and the guys were super hot. 

Because the guys were all working it themselves, it had MUCH more of a hustler vibe than Bangkok does. This may fade out some as you become more of a known quantity rather than just the rich foreigner that needs his pockets and balls emptied before he leaves town.

A goodly number of years ago, there was talk by Oz and Tampa Yankee of making me some kind of mod or admin or Lord High Executioner or some such.

Sadly things fell through (I blame the rumors circulated by an evil cabal (You know who you are!)).

Apparently, I lack a certain degree of restraint in my temperament. Me! Can you imagine? Shameless gossip!
