Atlantico Copacabana?

I'm thinking about going to Rio a few days....has anyone recently stayed at the Atlantico?

 

I haven't for many years, but for 40usd a night ....I might return....depending on their overnight policy, does it still stand?

 

I usually stay with Tomcal (the frigatebird) when I'm there but our dates don't line up.

 

I've also had more poor choices with airbnb and a hotel they change the sheets everyday (hopefully) and I like the security of checking id's at the front desk.

 

Last time I stayed at a relatively new hotel and had guys back...but when this one lady was working the front desk, she was like a hawk and no one got past her...that I don't need again.

Having just looked at room rates, I see that the Atlantico is down to $35 a night, including breakfast! Other hotels I have been watching are also down. A hotel I stayed in last year is down to $60 a night, another down to $80. These are reductions of 20-25%, no doubt currency related.

This same hotel 3or 4 years ago the rates were on the $200.00 range and the exchange rate,although more favorable, was not 300%of what it is today. Things certainly don't look good, it was recently reported that the glamuorous Copacabana Palace, the crown jewel of Brazilian hotels, is in the red.

Frankly, the prices on airbnb seem too good to be true. I am looking at $18-$39 a night for entire apartments. Typically I have shopped VRBO, where the prices are slightly lower than hotel prices. I don't want to spend my time weeding out low priced places that are no good.

Yesterday I checked out VRBO. Lots of higher prices, but also lots of prices lower than I am used to seeing. So one has to wonder if the low price is due to declining demand or just a low quality place. I'll stick with hotels. Price reductions there are not great, but still.

The low fares at the hotels is due basically to Airbnb competition. The financial situation also has it's share, but is important to notice that the crisis is going on for at least 3years (was actually much worse a year ago), while hotel prices started collapsing about a year ago. Is possible to get a one bedroom apartment for $50 or $60.00 a night in Ipanema or Copacabana, it will not be luxurious but quite decent. Is also more convenient to bring boys, since is one at a time, a good idea is renting the apartment for 2 (makes no difference on price) and at check in let them know that the companion will come later, (is not 100% guaranteed there will be trouble free but is a good chance) also rent the entire one bedroom apartment, never a room in an apartment where the owner lives. The Airbnb prices are getting ridiculously low, which leaves a lot more money to spend on boys. The only drawback is that you have to clean after yourself.

At www.airbnb.com-- in many of the ads there are rules listed, and in some of the ads it's listed whether or not management allows or disallows guests.

In 2011 I rented an apartment from a now defunct operation.  My friend and I had company over w/o encountering any problems.  This apartment complex had a security guard 27/7, and when we did have guests,   my friend, who could speak a little Brasilian Portuguese, would relay to him if guests would be arriving.  So again, note to see if any owner/manager has a specific guest policy when renting an apartment in Rio.

Axiom you sound like a school teacher...

i have been staying in Apts for 8 years now in Brazil, 4 X a year, and usually 2 sometimes 3 different cities!  so roughly 45+ times and they have All said “no overnight guests or non registered guests”!  I have had overnight guests every time, every night! including my last stay where the owner of the apt lived next door and 5 guys were staying with me!

It might seem like a moral issue but is more likely a security issue, which makes sense in a city like Rio. What scares the hosts is not only the extra person per se, but who is behind them and women are even considered more dangerous than men because there is usually somebody else behind their operation. While you are asleep, your "guest" might run to the corner and have the keys copied in a kiosk on the corner (plenty of them in Rio), so they have access to the apartment and the building when you leave town and you won't even figure it out. Seems paranoid, but it does happen. Is a good idea to not leave the keys at the door when you are sleeping with somebody. Not only the owners might have an issue with guests, the other tenants are probably against it as well. The bigger the apartment more restrictions on the table. A one room apartment is more easy to get away with it, a two room, you gotta get lucky, a three room forget about it. (you probably don't need it anyway).
