PattayaMale Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 It seems that a favorite breakfast place in Day Night has closed. I don't think it has been open for almost two weeks. I heard that there is hope that it may open again, but not sure. This economic down turn may leave us with several more business closings. It is sad to see what is starting to happen. Hopefully, the gay traveler will still continue to show up. It seems that this may be true as on another thread it was reported that Ambiance is almost booked up for the holiday season. Another good sign was reported that the airports are almost up to the level of passengers it had been handling. Quote
Guest MonkeySee Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 It seems that a favorite breakfast place in Day Night has closed. I don't think it has been open for almost two weeks. I heard that there is hope that it may open again, but not sure. They were closed yesterday and not open today when I walked by. No sign out to suggest when they may open again, as they have in the past. Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 I am having lunch with Googie later today after his hospital appointment. Maybe he will have some positive news which he will allow me to post. I hope he can open soon. Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 Googie was feeling well enough to have lunch with me today. Here is what he told me. He is having contract problems with his landlord. There are 2 contracts since he has 2 side by side shops that make the current Googies. One contract has ended and the landlord does not want to renew that contract. Of course there is no way to open one side only of the restaurant. Today when we drove by the restaurant a sign had been put up on one side saying it was for rent. So Googie may have no choice but to pull all his equipment out. Basically closing down. He also told me he may have some other options and will let people know when he knows. Quote
Guest lester1 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I guess you mustn't read too much into second hand information but I must be missing something here. Mr.Googie has a one fronted shop area on a contract. Then he gets hold of the next door unit on a second contract , knocks the intervening wall down and at considerable expense turns it into a two fronted restaurant. Then the contract on one of the units runs out and the landlord refuses to extend it. Presumably he either wants extra rental money, working on the basis that Mr.Googie has to comply or the other half becomes unviable, or has a better offer from somebody else. My view is that both possibilites were completely predictable and that perhaps Mr. Googie is the farang referred to in the old chectnut about 'its easy to make a small fortune in Thailand as long as you start with a big fortune'. I feel double sorry for the guy because of his illness but also because he must have lost a packet already on the other restaurant he opened near the old Flamingo Hotel. I assume there was a reason why he didnt combine the two contracts into one as soon as he took on the second unit. Of course, it might be the case that there are two landlords involved; if so, then the situation is even more mindnumbingly stupid. Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 the situation is even more mindnumbingly stupid. I'm wondering what point you are trying to make. If you feel curious about the reasons why Googie's is closed or feel that it's anyone's business other than his own, rather than second guessing or trying to make him look foolish through innuendo, why don't you simply ask him? You can contact him via Email at: googies-pattaya@hotmail.com You can call him at: 085 227 0114 Let us know what he tells you after you make contact with him. Quote
Guest lester1 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Sorry if I have upset anybody, especially GB. I am not entirely sure that GB's comment about the reason for closing is nobody's business other than Mr.Googie's. We all know that as soon as comment is made on a public message board about something, then that means it is open season for anybody else to chip in. If we were to confine ourselves to 'what is our business', then these boards would be rather dull places. Notice that I did not call Mr.Googie stupid, I said that the situation was stupid. The situation was described by an earlier correspondent who was also not minding his own business. It may be that he had Mr.Googies permission to release details for the many who enjoy his establishment and wonder about its future, in which case Mr.Googie himself has made his business everybodies business! The only comment I regret is the one about the large fortune becoming a small one. I agree, not fair or nice. So apologies to all who are offended. Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 We all know that as soon as comment is made on a public message board about something, then that means it is open season for anybody else to chip in. If we were to confine ourselves to 'what is our business', then these boards would be rather dull places. I agree with that part. People are always sticking their noses into other people's business on these boards. The gossip queens seem to love that. Unfortunately, whether that would make a board a dull place or not, it doesn't make it a right thing to do. In my opinion it's one thing for people to post about a business being open or closed, but it's quite another when people post speculation without having the facts. When you start a sentence with "Presumably," that tells me you don't have the facts or you didn't speak to Googie before posting. Regarding Googies, what we know is that for at least the time being he is closed. That's all we know. As for the reason he is closed, I've heard your version of it along with several other versions. What nobody posting about it seems to have done is to ask Googie himself. In my opinion, posting guesses as to why he is closed without at least being able to post what he says about it himself is unfair, especially if your guess turns out to be wrong. That's what I think, anyway. I have nothing personal for or against Googie. For the record, I've eaten there a grand total of once, and that was nearly five years ago. I don't know Googie personally. I wouldn't know him if he was sitting next to me. It doesn't matter to me personally whether his restaurant is open, closed, or anything else. However, I do think that businesses, especially gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses, ought to be treated fairly on the boards. I think it's the responsibility of the boards and the people posting on them to at least do their best to make sure they're right before writing negative posts that can potentially harm someone's business. I don't know what's going on with postings about Googie's on other boards. I haven't read those posts. But on this board, let's at least have his version of it before declaring "open season," as you put it, on him. Fair enough? Quote
Guest joseph44 Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Well, Googie's could try to obtain the 'old' O'Briens, which was transferred into Take Me or Take away restaurant. It's for rent since a few weeks. Quote

This is because O'Briens was the eaterie that Mr.Googie opened up about a year ago that never really took off. I assume that it is available for rent again. Although its position is good, it does have a heap of competition from other places in that Soi. I was last there in April and from the Pattaya tai end and walking down, you have Cuisine Au beurre, Little Planet, Luxor, what used to be Renoir, then Salt and Pepper, and then at least two ter places whose name escapes me.
