Shut Up, DeNiro

Robert De Niro was a guest at the TONY Awards. He had a specific job- to introduce Bruce Springsteen. De Niro is not a stage actor. Because he is a big movie star he gets invited in the hope that he will help the TONYS poor TV ratings.

But as a guest he had to mind his manners. The show was trying to avoid becoming an anti-Trump rally. Until De Niro came on, it had. His vulgarity may have been a crowd pleaser, but it distracted the news reporters from the awards themselves. How is that for putting yourself before your host? Since Sunday, do you read much about the TONYS? Or do you see more written about De Niro?

I hope that they never invite him back. And no, I am not, nor have I ever been, a Trump supporter.

Nice critique. I don't watch award shows so I was spared this melodramatic performance.  NP.  I rarely go to movies either so barely even know who De Niro is.

Nice critique. I like DeNiro and glad he spoke up.  You are right, it distracted from the show and the winners. But, in this fucked up world of Trump, would anything been reported anyway?  I am not sure.  After all, we had a Trump Kim summit that changed the world and deserves a Nobel Prize. :)

DeNiro could have spoken up anywhere and received press coverage. Why he had to sabotage the TONYS isn't easy to explain. They need the attention the awards can bring, but DeNiro only cared about himself.

If he wanted attention, just call TMZ. They'll respond like hungry dogs at a picnic.

Agreed, we live in a country that supposedly affords us Free Speech.  Our President certainly takes advantage of this right so why shouldnt DeNiro, regardless of what the evening was supposed to be about..?   I applaud him.   Now is not the time to remain silent..... Anyway, the show is a frivolous bunch of fluff about people patting themselves on the backs for winning a competition.  DeNiro didnt interrupt MUCH !    and his message was much more important...

DeNiro has every right of free speech, but everything in its place. The TONYS was not his show, that's all I am saying. Just like you can call it frivolous fluff, that's your right to say, here, where you a member and not a guest.

That's not entirely true. He was on Broadway in 1986.

That's not entirely true, either. He's the co-director of The Bronx Tale The Musical.

De Niro has reached a point in his life/career where he feels he can do just about anything he wants to do. Nobody controls De Niro. I've worked with De Niro, and I can tell you his ego is HUGE. He and I did not bond. He preferred to interact with my beautiful female assistant at the time. She is Black. I knew what I was doing by hiring her.

Not just himself. His friend Chazz Palminteri is about to enter the musical. I'm sure De Niro felt this was a good opportunity to drum up some free publicity. De Niro is no dummy when it comes to free anything.

He knew the vast majority of the audience would be on his side. He knew what their reaction would be. He knew CBS was on a time delay and would bleep it. He knew the media would go crazy. He knew some in the media would talk about the fact that he's got a musical on Broadway. De Niro can be very calculated. Oh, and btw, he hates Trump.

I posted two comments that don't show on the menu. Then I got signed out while typing a response here. Is the thread jinxed? I didn't know DeNiro was that powerful!

Keep the fight alive!  Be vile, nasty and reveal how much hate the left and Hollywood  has for the president.  Don't stop till the votes are counted!

Gurl, you just stay on  that Trump Train until it derails.....  (hope you're wearing a helmet?)

It's not just "the left." I know many Republican voters who are currently hating on Trump. They voted for him while holding their noses, and now the stench is so putrid, they're sick of the sight and the sound of the guy.

It may take another major war to reduce severe partisanship in this country. I hope that's not the case. I hope not in my lifetime. The new women candidates who are entering races may save the day for us all.

Trump is a disaster for America, and many Republicans now realize it. Let's see what happens when Mueller releases his report. Then let's see what happens in the mid-terms. Yes, the fight is alive, and I'm donating as much as I can.

I hope you got 6 1/2 more years of hate in you.  This is going to be a rough time for all the haters.  His every success will burn at your very soul.

But if it brings you joy....  enjoy.

Wake up and smell the corruption Bucky.   You and Trump should start packing your knapsacks NOW !    :bye:

Oh and BTW, if you consider that carefully orchestrated Kim summit (photo-op another "success",  you're even a bigger fool than you've already proven to be.

I'm a happy camper with President Trump.  I'm also happy to be here so others see they are not alone in being a gay Trump supporter.

And if you think Trump is not popular you should see this

Yeah cause he made their Nazi/racist agenda popular and "visible".  Now they dont have to hide in their closets with their hatred.  They can wave it proudly and have it applauded by THEIR President.   You and the other happy campers can all sit around the bondfire and celebrate with Glee until it comes crashing down on your heads.  Especially the Gays, who have obviously turned their backs on their community to put this vile, homophobic animal on his pedestal.  SHAME ON YOU.... trading a BEAUTIFUL Rainbow flag for a symbolic "white sheet"....:poke:

How dare that Trump drive unemployment for minorities to their lowest levels?  Bad Trump!

Nice to see you are able to cherry pick a talking point.... That really has nothing to do directly with Trump.  It's a cyclical reaction to economy,  but if you want to give your "massa" that notch on his bedpost, go right ahead.  And while you are at it, KISS HIS FEET !

Talking points are people too...

I love seeing my race gainfully employed.  If it's not a point to talk about, it should be.

I agree, but once again, TRUMP didnt do that !   Its more education and accomplished skills.    Stop drinking Kool-Aid and have a glass of water.

Presidents have a lot less to do with the economy than they or their backers like to think.  In addition, during my life time I seemingly have observed that succeeding Presidents reap the reward (if any economically) of the previous.  Not going back too far, Clinton enjoyed the ground work done by Bush the first, Bush the second suffered from Clinton, Obama first suffered then enjoyed the work done by Bush II.  I agree we have not much of an idea of the economic legacy of Trump.  Global politics do count.  Also public perception (vs. reality).  Again, many factors can overwhelm or underwhelm what a President does.  His main arena is public perception with limited other inputs.

Best regards,

Trump had nothing to do with approving the pipelines.

Trump had nothing to do with reigning in the EPA and stopping their power grab.

Trump had nothing to do with threatening companies that if they go to Mexico and try to sell to the usa they will be sorry.

Trump had nothing to do with killing the Obamacare mandate.

Trump had nothing to do with putting in a rule that for every new regulation, 2 must be eradicated.

Trump had nothing to do with the tax cuts bringing hundreds of billions back to the usa and having employers give out large bonuses.

Trump had nothing to do with all those foreign companies announcing they were investing big in the usa due to trump.

Trump had nothing to do with bringing north Korea to the table and accepting the hostages from them without flying in 100's of billions in cash like Obama did for iran.

Trump had nothing to do with telling China to stop stealing our inventions and is now in a push pull situation with them.  I wonder who will win? Haha.

Trump had nothing to do with getting NATO to reach into their pockets and start living up to their funding promises.

And that is just the stuff off the top of my head of stuff trump had no hand in.

Even Obama said trump didn't have a magic wand that would lower unemployment and grow the economy.  Obama told us these jobs were not coming back.  Guess trump didn't hear him.
