Guest fountainhall Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Not having visited Pattaya for more than 18 months, 3 friends and I just returned from 3 days staying in a nice hotel in South Pattaya. On previous visits, I have had great times in fun bars like Funny Boys (perhaps my favourite), Throb and Krazy Dragon. This trip we visitied a reasonable selection in Boystown and Sunnee, including the aforementioned 3 plus Boyz Boyz Boyz, A-Bomb and Villa Rouge. Apart from Villa Rouge (which is not really my scene), we found the average age of boys has definitely gone up and there are far more macho types (as opposed to cute types) than there ever were before. Very few in any of the bars actually smiled and many looked downright bored. Funny Boys was - amazingly - like being at a funeral! Granted there were not many customers around, but I'd have thought this would be the time for the boys to make themselves as appealing as possible. Only in Rock Hard Boys in Jomtien did we find boys who really seemed to enjoy themselves and go out of their way to see that customers were having a good time. After two nights, we gave up on the bars and enjoyed a wonderful meal at Au Bon Coin. I never thought I'd say it, but some of the bars in Bangkok are now more appealing. Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Maybe it's akin to the kind of performance stage actors are likely to give to a packed house rather than when the theater is nearly empty. The high season, for obvious reasons, has been a dismal one. Perhaps the mood has rubbed off on the boys. Some bars seem to draw a good number of customers, but many remain close to empty. Yes, you would think that the boys might try harder with fewer customers, but I have a feeling that many have simply thrown in the towel. Don't forget, you were in the bars only a couple of nights, but those same boys have been working to a nearly empty house for months. I can't say I blame the boys you observed if they have given up trying very hard, considering the fact that it's getting more and more rare for them to be taken off no matter how hard they try. I would have expected to see a lot more of them trying to work the beach or work the gay personals web sites, but I don't see significantly more on the personals sites and, oddly enough, I have actually observed a very significant drop in the numbers of boys trying their luck at the beach. Maybe they're just trying to survive until this too passes. As far as their cuteness goes, however, that's in the eye of the beholder. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Yes, many seemed just to be waiting for the mamasan to introduce the old theatrical practice: if there are more performers on stage than in the audience, you cancel the show and all go home. I have actually observed a very significant drop in the numbers of boys trying their luck at the beach We did spend all of one afternoon at the beach and also noticed a distinct lack of eye candy. So, many thanks to the 5 smiling volleyball guys who entertained us even though there was very little space due to the tide being high. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Although the attitude of boys in a specific bar might vary, I don't think the general attitude of boys across all bars has changed. But I think that my mood varies on a nightly basis and that impacts the way I perceive the boys and also their attitude towards me. Last night is a good example. After a great time at the Christmas bash and feeling a little drunk, my buddy wanted to ogle some eye candy. So we popped into Villa Rouge and all the dancers seemed to be extraordinarily friendly. But I really think it was we who was feeling great and our attitude rubbed off on them. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 I think that my mood varies on a nightly basis and that impacts the way I perceive the boys and also their attitude towards me Point taken and accepted. But there were 4 of us, and we do tend to chat and laugh amongst ourselves and have a boy or two over for drinks and tips rather than just ogling whilst bar hopping. Each night we all felt the same, which makes me doubt it was our effect on the boys rather than the other way around. As I mentioned, Funny Boys has always been on my schedule when visiting Pattaya. I have always liked their selection of boys and have had some great times there. On this visit, the boys seemed definitely older (on average) and with just two exceptions far more interested in themselves than in the possiblity of even a drink with some convivial farangs. I am supposed to be visiting again in January, but judging by the experience of the last few days, I really have no desire. Which I do find rather sad. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Having made another trip to Pattaya early in the week, I did find a big change in the bars and gay areas from mid-December. There were certainly far more people around and the boys in the bars seemed to be having far more fun again. I guess the increased numbers might be due to Chinese New Year visitors, and I wonder if business is now starting to fall back once again? Quote
