PattayaMale Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Today I went with my Thai friend to see Ong-Bak 2. The first thing I was amazed at is that the theater was almost full for a 12:15 showing on a Monday. The movie has a lot of action and very good English translation. There is not much dialog so it is very easy to follow the story line. It was realistic since they did not seem to use much computer generated scenes. Looking for something to do, take a Thai friend to see it. You both will like it Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Four of us went to see it yesterday (2 Thais and 2 farang). One of the Thais wanted to leave after 30 min. His farang bf said "It was the worst movie I ever saw." MY bf and I liked it because of the reality of it. The lead actor did all of his own stunts and did not use harnesses. Agreed, there wasn't much of a a story line, but it was interesting to watch. Quote

Guest fountainhall Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Saw it yesterday in Discovery Centre around 5:00 pm and was surprised that the cinema was less than 1/5 full. Personally I disliked it as it's merely a series of totally unbelievable fight scenes (Tony Jaa killing legions of attackers all on his own) with pounding, repetitive music and quite unrealistic sound effects (flesh hitting flesh just does not sound like bricks hitting bricks!). It's obviously an attempt to match the Hong Kong kung fu movie genre which just does not click. But my Thai friend enjoyed it. And I understand that it has already been sold for release in quite a number of countries - so I guess I missed something! Quote
Guest MonkeySee Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Looking for something to do, take a Thai friend to see it. You both will like it I will see if boy special wants to see it tomorrow. I am not really into blood and guts kung fu movies, but bf will probably like it. Speaking of liking it, do you think Thais enjoy English films with Thai subtitles. Seems many of my Thai friends loose interest in the movie before it is over. I guess it depends on the movie. Quote

Seems many of my Thai friends loose interest in the movie before it is over. I guess it depends on the movie. Without any doubt at all. They love the movies and are far more used to going to movies with subtitles than we westerners. They go gaga over all the same movies that seem to do well here in the west (from Harry Potter to James Bond to whatever). As a side note, about the only place in Thailand I've been cold (other than Doi Inthanon and one late evening in Chiangmai) has been in Thai movie theaters. Damn near as cold as all the friggin' 7-11 stores! Quote

They love the movies, if action, but not keen on a lot of reading of subtitles, at least the bf. He often watches western DVDs without the Thai subtitles. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 It all depends on the movie and the Thai if they mind reading the subtitles. Many of the movies have subtitles that don't make sense, especially the copy DVDs. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Many of the movies have subtitles that don't make sense, especially the copy DVDs. Whoever does the english subtitles for copy DVDs clearly has no great knowledge of spoken and written English. This reminds me of the experience of a friend (let's call him Witaya) who was training for work in a new hotel here. Part involved role playing, with the management team being 'guests' and the trainees acting as front desk attendants, room service waiters etc. Witaya's english is kind of OK, but his pronunciation leaves something to be desired. In one session he was being a room service waiter when the 'guest' asked what he would suggest for a dessert. "Sir, may I suggest you . . ". "No, Khun Witaya" replied the trainer with exasperation; "it's 'sug-gest', not 'suck guest'!" To the question "What kind of shopping can I do near the hotel?", Witaya's answer, "Well, sir, there are many kinds of shops, such as . . ." was cut short with the response, "No, Khun Witaya, you really must be much more careful about your pronunciation. It's 'such as' - not 'suck ass'!" Both, I swear, are true! Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I remember checking into a hotel in BKK and the bellboy who took me to my room was pointing out the various accouterments in the room. He pointed to the water at the minibar and said, "You get two free bottoms everyday." Needless to say I was thrilled. Quote
Guest MonkeySee Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I will see if boy special wants to see it tomorrow. I asked my friend if he wanted to go to the movies and to my surprise he said, "no, too cold." My answer was to bring a jacket, but we bought a DVD instead and stayed at home. Quote

It is action packed with kungfu-type fighting. There were a couple of bloody scenes that I had to look away, but overall it was entertaining. I recommend it. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 James Bond As a side note, about the only place in Thailand I've been cold (other than Doi Inthanon and one late evening in Chiangmai) has been in Thai movie theaters. Damn near as cold as all the friggin' 7-11 stores! Whenever we go to the movies we bring along two sweatshirts. My teerak and I both enjoyed the new James Bond movie. Roger Craig is an excellent Bond, perhaps not as suave as Roger Moore but a real killer. The Cineplex at the Avenue mall in Pattaya has very confortable seating. We're late nigters generally going to the last showing and it's always empty. One time we were the only two customers. Don't worry if you're running late because they generally show at least 20 minutes of trailers. Quote
