Giuliani Resigns From Law Firm Amid Tensions Over Comments about Trump

May 10, 2018

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, abruptly resigned from his law firm after weeks of tensions over his public comments.

Mr. Giuliani took a leave of absence last month from the firm, Greenberg Traurig, one of the nation’s largest, to represent Mr. Trump. But the firm announced on Thursday that he no longer worked there as of a day earlier.

“After recognizing that this work is all consuming and is lasting longer than initially anticipated, Rudy has determined it is best for him to resign,” said the firm’s chairman, Richard A. Rosenbaum.

In a statement released by the firm, Mr. Giuliani said it “is in everyone’s best interest that I make it a permanent resignation” so he can focus on the special counsel’s investigation.

Firm partners had chafed over Mr. Giuliani’s public comments about payments that another of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Michael D. Cohen, made to secure the silence of a pornographic film actress who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. The president has denied her allegations. In interviews, Mr. Giuliani suggested that such payments were common at his firm.

“That was money that was paid by his lawyer, the way I would do, out of his law firm funds,” he said on Fox News.

He added, “Michael would take care of things like this like I take care of this with my clients.”

The New York Times asked Greenberg Traurig several times to explain those remarks over the past week. On Tuesday, a firm spokeswoman asked for more time to provide answers.

Mr. Giuliani’s colleagues at Greenberg Traurig had bristled in late 2016 when Mr. Giuliani played an aggressive, pit bull-style surrogate role on Mr. Trump’s behalf during the presidential campaign. After Mr. Trump’s inauguration, when it became clear that Mr. Giuliani would not get the job he wanted — secretary of state — he kept a relatively low profile at the request of his colleagues.

But Mr. Giuliani has enjoyed the public-relations work he has been doing for Mr. Trump, according to three people who have spoken with him. Much like his client, the former mayor prefers being untethered , they said.

Translation: He was kicked-out. He was embarrassing the firm.

"Giuliani resigns" as a thread title is misleading.

While he did resign as an associate in a law firm that represents the untruthful and bigoted Trump, Giuliani did not resign from his co-representation of Trump.

Unfortunately, Giuliani remains quite prevalent in the news despite his severance with his former law firm.

I agree. I hope you weren’t momentarily affected by an uncontrollable rapid heart rate increase.

The thread title was supposed to be “Giuliani Resigns Firm”. I dislike very much redundant thread titles and thread body-content titles within a post. The former was originally populated with the latter.  While backing it out I failed to repopulate it properly.

Since there is no BB Code Editor function available in the forum tools, I could not make the change I wanted once published.

With that said,  I’m sure it won’t be long before this thread title becomes the news it implies.

The attention whore sold out, and now Trump owns his sole.     So much for an enduring career....  It's pretty much Dunzo after this.

Giuliani’s career as a competent  practicing attorney died more than a decade ago.  He is now the embarrassing uncle that you don’t want to invite over for Thanksgiving dinner.

He is worse than you described.

He was a prosecutor, not a defense attorney

Worse, he has not practiced any kind of law in decades.   Suddenly, he decided to come out from the woodwork and "defend" Trump, the biggest embarrassment our country has ever had.

He does have something in common with Trump in that they are both draft dodgers:

See this:

"Giuliani did not serve in the military during the Vietnam War. His conscription was deferred while he was enrolled at Manhattan College and NYU Law. Upon graduation from the latter in 1968, he was classified by the Selective Service System as 1-A, available for military service. He applied for a deferment but was rejected. In 1969, Judge MacMahon wrote a letter to Giuliani's draft board, asking that he be reclassified as 2-A, civilian occupation deferment, because Giuliani, who was a law clerk for MacMahon, was an essential employee. The deferment was granted. In 1970, Giuliani received a high draft lottery number; he was not called up for service although by then he had been reclassified 1-A.[30][31]

Seriously, would anyone out here want Giuliani as your attorney?

I never inferred that he was a defense attorney. Yes, he was a prosecutor, but he was/is also an attorney. Everything else is spot-on.

One thing for sure,  I know if I was investigated the way Trump is, I would be in jail already!  LOL

It's impressive that he has been in business for so long and dealing with New York unions building his properties, and we all know the union is not run by Boy Scouts, and yet they still have not found anything to charge President Trump with.

Impressive.

I know you did not say he was a defense attorney.

What I pointed out was that although his background and experience is that of a prosecutor, he is taking on a new and serious role as defense attorney.   Clearly, one has to wonder about competency, which Giuliani has not shown through those numerous and hideous interviews he has granted over public airways.

Legally, as a licensed New York attorney, he can practice in any field despite lack of experience in that field.

Of course, he is an attorney.  He has been licensed in New York since 1969.  It is just that he has not practiced on the side he has now chosen to defend.

I completely agree! Perhaps it was just my misinterpretation.

The biggest mistake Donald Trump ever made in his life was running for president. And he’ll never understand this, but these great United States of ours is not run like his corrupt Trump organization; or by con-men like him or Russian oligarchs who fund his organization; and he is not a king, like he wants to believe. We have separation of powers in this country; and soon, his will be stripped away from him in disgrace. In one form or another.

I don’t even care about what he might luck-into with North Korea. He’s unfit to be our commander-in-chief.

I agree the title was a bit misleading. But, I had not read this before.  So, thank you for posting it.  I was in NYC when he was major. The gays hated him.  I still do.  All dark rooms were being raided and I liked free blowjobs. But, his statements on what he would do with his firm are nothing something any large firm can tolerate.  He was only there for his name.  I am not sure how much his name will mean after all this but I am sure he will get another job and for even more money after all this is over.

Working with Trump, he's more of an "ambulance" chaser.....
