Gaybutton Posted December 9, 2008 Author Posted December 9, 2008 I don't understand why I consistently get a higher rate than is posted here. I wouldn't complain about it . . . Most likely it has to do with the time of day when you withdraw money. I post the opening rates, which usually appear about 8:00am, and the closing rates, which usually appear around 5:00pm. During the day the rates constantly fluctuate. Also, since you're withdrawing from a foreign bank, maybe you're getting an offshore rate. I have no idea why or how it works, but offshore rates seem to be better than the rates within Thailand. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I wouldn't complain about it . . . It was not a complaint, just a rhetorical comment. Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I was hoping I would be able to buy 36 baht for 1 US dollar but see that the baht peaked at 35.8 and is now heading down. Since it is almost Christmas, I need every satang to buy what my Thai friend is hoping for. Quote

PattayaMale Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 The difference of the US dollar to the Baht had a big fall yesterday of almost .5 baht. I keep reading that the Thai economy is on the brink...as is the US, but I am surprised that in just a few days the dollar is worth one less baht Quote

Gaybutton Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 I keep reading that the Thai economy is on the brink...as is the US, but I am surprised that in just a few days the dollar is worth one less baht. It's not just the US dollar. Today, with the exception of the Euro, all the major western currencies slid against the baht. I have given up trying to understand why. It would seem to me that in light of all the turmoil in Thailand and the residual effects, the baht would have fallen against other major currencies. Is there anyone out there who knows enough about economics who can explain it to those of us who don't understand? I was expecting the baht to be in the 36's against the US dollar by now. Instead, it's back in the 34's. What's keeping the baht so strong? Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 On CNBC they seem to think the $ dropped because the Senate refused to bail out the auto industry. Quote

PattayaMale Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 GB, Maybe you need to change the title of the thread to "Exchange rate falls to 34 baht to the dollar" Do you think now that a new government has been elected the baht will get stronger? I think I need to go shopping before things get worse. Euro Boys for sure tonight Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Do you think now that a new government has been elected the baht will get stronger? To tell the truth, I don't know what to think anymore. Now that the Prime Minister election has taken place, I'm going to continue these posts for the rest of this week. If there are no major changes by Friday, that's when I'll end this thread and start a fresh exchange rate thread if significant changes occur later. As of 2:00pm, the US dollar to baht exchange rate hasn't changed at all since this morning. It's still 34.68. That's unusual. Quote

mahjongguy Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 There seems to be a general feeling that the value of the baht compared to other currencies has a lot to with current events, that political turmoil is a big factor. That's just not the case. It's money, so it's much more about interest rates and trade imbalances and such. The recent climb of the USD vs. THB had little to do with a "weak baht". It was about a flight to quality strengthening the dollar. Now, yesterday's unavoidable cut in US interest rates has turned the dollar around, falling somewhat against the baht and most other currencies. Gaze into the future and place your bets as you will, but predicting currency rates has few rewards. Yes, in a few months Thailand will be cutting interest rates further and exports will be a fraction of normal. Will that mean a cheap baht for you? That will depend entirely on the strength of your home country's currency. Relative to the baht, it might be better or it might be worse. Quote

Gaybutton Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 My apologies. I didn't have time this morning to post the opening rates, but here are the closing rates. I'm going to stop these posts for the time being. If the US dollar to baht exchange rate falls below 34 or looks as if it's going to get up into the 35's again, then I'll continue these posts on a new thread.
