yes, i will defenitely bargain, if they offer me something what is out of market. so, i will not bargain, if they say 100 or 120. but if someone offers 200, i will try to bring price down to normal range.

on the other hand, i will always tip, if service is good.  i will always give 50 reais more, than what was negotiated, but only if the service was good. mostly is.  but i would not pay if if someone, was combing his hair, while fucking me.

it maybe sound stupid to negotiate from 150 to 100, and then pay 150. but protects the uality of service. and i think the boys know and expect that.

Could anybody really sum up and knit together the many, often disparate, pieces of thought put forward here? I must admit, though, there is an obsessionality about it and we we will see it played out in interminable groundhog day style. I find myself drawn to the posts like a moth to flame. You can almost time to the minute when money will inevitably come up. Once introduced into a thread it becomes like a fast-spreading weed choking out the topic's purpose. It can never be shut down because too many posters need to have the last word, and too much attention span is required. I hope mine is not the final word that shuts it down. Who could tolerate such omnipotence?

I find the whole thing incredibly amusing as a kind of collective character trait, ideas defying meaningful integration while colliding off each other. Then me unwittingly putting myself out there as a whipping boy, offering the one opportunity for unification among those polarized in their futile attempts to give readers a true roadmap for the topic of money.

Interestingly, I think this topic should never be shelved because it cannot be put to rest. It is immortal and beloved. I think we should just resign ourselves to living with it, stockholm syndrome style. I get a kick out of it, while kicking myself for it.

I agree with you. Fact: we will never agree, we all are placed in different ranges in the anti/pro bargaining continuum. Let me add a second fact, that makes @axiom2001's over reaction completely unjustified: whether or not you like bargaining, it is an institution in some cultures, including most South American countries. Bargaining is often not only tolerated, but expected.

Ok guys I am fully reconciled with this city, even though it is still ugly, but I had a great 24 hours.

 

 

I spent Saturday morning visiting the Porto Alegre cathedral, the market (nothing to buy, but it is good to see how people live here, and what they eat), and the rest of the city center.

 

By 11:30, it was getting too hot for me, so I went back to my hotel to enjoy the gym, the pool, and a take a nap.

 

I left at 3:30 pm for mezzaninu, but I arrived 10 minutes early: they only open at 4, so I had to hang around with GPs who didn’t feel like talking to me much. 

 

I have not yet mentioned the quality of the premises. It is very large, very clean, very well organized and probably expensive for the locals. Clearly the best setup of all the saunas I have seen.

My primary bank’s automated fraud system has freaked out (it was more or less expected) and has blocked card payments from both my credit card and my debit card. So I am using set of cards from backup bank #1. If they freak out as well, I have a 2nd backup, and then a 3rd backup set. This is happening although I have warned their system, online, that I was going to be in Brasil for these dates. They still freaked out. Maybe the shadyness of the places I am paying makes it more likely. I could call them and go through the painful process to get this unblocked, but I am on holidays! This can be dealt with from home later on.

 

The heat is getting too much again, most likely I will spend the afternoon at the hotel again, using the gym and pool, and maybe today get ready to bottom at Mezzaninu.

Yes, I have a simple rule which is more than 1600 years old: “When in Rome, do like the Romans”.

That rule has worked for me extremely well everywhere, no exception (and I have been to a lot of places) for any aspect of life.

It does mean you have to spend a lot of time observing, though.

So, @axiom2001, I have no issues with your post, but yes I haggle down to 100 in PA, because that is the minimum haggling expected. The locals certainly often haggle further down. 

I would not haggle with an escort in the US or in Europe, simply because “that isn’t done”.

Also, you will notice, in the US, if you reject a high price from an escort, the conversation simply politely ends there. Here in Brasil, you immediately get a lower offer from the guy, which is a clear indication that haggling is normal.

My new boyfriend is AWESOME!

Ok well, we just broke up because I am in the airplane to Montevideo and there is very little chance I will be back here for a long time, but he was AWESOME!

So if you have been reading, his name is Bruno, he is gay, usually passive, not effeminate, tender, sexy, romantic etc. etc. 

Anyway, we were texting all day Sunday, he was offering a walk in the park, or a cinema (apparently they have English audio movies here), but I declined. He said he would be in mezzaninu later. We also agreed that we would go to Gramado tomorrow together. I had hinted that it would be easier to go together early if he slept at my place 

I was thinking of going to Plataforma, just to check it out, but I got lazy. So I will leave PA never having seen this famous historical Sauna. I know some of you will say I have missed out on a couple of interesting hours. 

I got an Uber straight to Mezzaninu, in which there was a very slow night going on again. Only a few of the usual suspects were there, except for 2 new twink boys which I tried.

Bruno was hugging people he recognized and having chats with them. Interestingly the fact, that the music was too loud to talk has no impact on our communication, since flashes of google translate white text on blue screens is still the main way to talk for us.

It also helped that, unlike in my late 20’s clubbing experiences, I was not going to be rejected even once tonight, because I was not cruising. I already had one of the 5 hottest guys on the floor dancing with me. By the way, he knows some serious dance moves. 

He got notified that there was a party where 2 of his room mates were, North of town. He offered to go, and I was like “sure”. So new Uber (I think Bruno was loving the idea of jumping from party to party at no cost to him), we went quite some way out of the centre of town. It was such and experience:

First, it was in a field! There was everything you would expect in a club, except the walls and the roof. Very gay friendly party, but not exclusively. One girl was Bruno’s room mate, he asked if she could come also with us to Gramado in the morning. I said “yes, if she can wake up early enough”. I thought it would be good for him to have someone to speak to at normal speed. She was fine, but I didn’t connect.

There was a second of his roommate, an incredibly cute 18 yo, Matteus. He had a sense of humor like my Bruno. I had to remind myself a second time that here not everyone was for hire. He was hugging and kissing his boyfriend (who was the quiet type).

The party finished soon (we had arrived into it very late) and then, we heard of a third place with more people they knew. I was only a bit reluctant but he showed me where it was on the map, and it was 3 blocks from my hotel, so I though at worst I will loose 1/2 hour of sleep, no unnecessary travel happening here. Bruno said no need for Uber, my friend has a car. OK, All good, we squeeze at six in this car, and then things started to go downhill: the driver was drunk. Not quite enough to miss a traffic light or do something stupid like this, but still, I was uncomfortable. (Young people! ) Luckily at 1 am the streets are empty and he was staying under the speed limit, so I didn’t make a scene and I resorted to make well received jokes about our drunk driver through my google translate, showing them to everyone except him. 

For example when we arrived I flashed on my phone at everyone “quem é surpreso ao ainda estar vivo?” ( “who else is surprised to still be alive?”).
I loved making Matteus laugh. 


At the third party (more like an After) I paid for all 6 entrances of course (who cares about total us$ 30) but it wasn’t as fun any more. Also, a near catastrophe: the second girl roommate of Bruno was also there, and they asked if we could take her too. I didn’t dare to say no, but she looked trashy, and I don’t know if “a sense of vulgarity” is the right description of the feeling I had about her. 

Luckily, that got fully resolved later in the morning. At 7:30am when he texted them, the girls had only just arrived home, and so they were more desperate for sleep than for Gramado. 

Bruno was a star all night, though, hugs, kisses, holding hands, introducing me to everyone, not ashamed in any way, always checking with me if I preferred to go back to the hotel or something else. After 40 minutes in that “After”, we left for the hotel. I was feeling 29 again. 

Exhausted, no sex, fell asleep right away. 

We woke up early, Monday morning, quick breakfast and left for the car rental place, and of course I screwed up. I forgot my driving license at the hotel. We had to go back and lost nearly an hour in total.

He doesn’t drive, so I drove all the way up to Gramado.

Drove 10 minutes to Canela, more pictures, lunch, and then more shopping. He was looking at phones, and he decided which Samsung he wanted, and then looked at me, imploring. I was shaking my head but he said “you help me, half only”. 

All right, all right, you do need a phone that works.

He paid his half with his fee from me. I paid mine by CC. Later on in the evening, he was very thankful about this

 

The drive back was tough, at 6-7 pm you have the sun in your eyes all the way, in that direction.  Sunglasses only do so much for me. Anyone who has enough time, I strongly recommend to sleep up in Gramado so you only do 2 hours of driving in a single day. 

 

I was also tired, and my back hurt. He offered to stop for 15 minutes at his family’s house which is half way with just an 8 minutes extra driving. That was perfect for me, I was able to relax, drink some painkillers, and the sun had just gone down when we started again, so the rest was more comfortable. Great for him too, he wanted to leave them some of the chocolates we had bought in Gramado. 

 

I told him that he hadn’t shaved for 2 days and that was not how I preferred him. He asked to stop in a pharmacy and he bought several toiletries. 

 

Back at the hotel, he spent a long time preparing for me, shaving, cleaning up down there, showering of course, using the new perfume I just bought him...

 

The sex was so tender and slow, so boyfriend-like, so good, I am still not sure it wasn’t a dream.

thanks for the reviews Tarte!  a couple of points 1) i have paid a $100R for at least the last 7 or 8 years in Rio and SP and $75-80. in Porto Alegre until 2 yrs ago when i made it a $100.R for everyone! i have never tipped! ever! but i do offer them a drink(s).  all i can say it’s worked well for me for the past 17 years going to Brazil!

Tarte the Moinjos de Vento park is a pretty well used park for joggers, many good looking guys and on sunny weekends it is packed. First day in Montevideo:

Arrived in my 4* hotel in Montevideo and it is a bit of a disaster. The safe doesn’t work, the walls aren’t well painted and the room smells. I am worried about my back on this mattress. On top of this, the staff don’t speak English. 

After thinking about whether I could make this room work for a good 10 minutes, I upgraded myself to the Radisson (5*). 

To be fair, they still agreed to not charge me anything. And the 5* of the Radisson I don’t think are deserved, in the US it would be a 4*. 

Then I went to eat a seafood casserole at the Mercado Del Puerto. It is a beautiful place although I suspect a bit of tourist trap. I walked past several nice buildings to come here. Love the pedestrian streets with palm trees. Overall, quite a clean city, big improvement on Porto Alegre. 

I have walked the busy streets for about 3 hours and I have seen at least 1000 white people but only 2 black people here. And 4 Japanese tourists. This is whiter than Helsinki, Finland. Except they all have a nice tan. 


Switching away from Portuguese is hard. I used to find Spanish easier to speak than Portuguese, but not today. Everything comes out in Portuguese.

Writing this from the Buquebus fast ferry between Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

This Ferry ride is very comfortable. Not a cruise ship, obviously but still nice. 

I recommend the business class, only about $25 more.

I was thinking of going by bus to Colonia and take the ferry from there, but that would have shorted my time in Buenos Aires. Plus I was lazy, I have my big luggage and taking it on a bus wasn’t appealing. 

 

In the last few days, I have been confirming my hires in Montevideo and Buenos Aires in a way similar to the following:

I am joking and i am not that annoyed, but I thought I would share that anecdote, as I found it funny that all of them did this to me. 

 

And anyway, I am not immune to being stupid: I dropped my passport somewhere in the ferry terminal and realised it only when queuing for the checkin. 

I started panicking. After asking 4 different staff members, I was starting to think it was lost in the taxi, and was already imagining myself stuck 2 days in Montevideo while the consulate was making me a new passport on their emergency service.  The 5th person I asked made a phone call and luckily, someone had brought it to the terminal’s admin office, and they just handed it back to me.

 

I haven’t found people to be friendly in Montevideo. They are very cold. Brazilians were nearly all instantly warm and smiling. Here only a couple of people were not stone-faced. Fair enough, my Spanish is terrible, but at least I am trying!

 

There are 2 gay saunas in Montevideo, Toronto Sauna and Horus sauna both in the center, but I haven’t visited either. There are no garotos de programma as far as I know and I didn’t feel like pulling a guy that looks like me.

Banks all close at 3 pm. 

And you can’t withdraw after that, because most of their ATM area not accessible out of hours. 

There are no ATMs in the street.  I went through 5 banks like this, finally found an ATM that charged me $7 to withdraw $120. All the cash come out so the ATM in banknotes worth $5.7 each.

So if you are hiring at night and want to withdraw cash, be sure to withdraw in the morning. 

 

Nearly everyone is white again. There are more East-Asians, though, they are running some shops here, not just tourists.
