Bangkok has Changed a Lot (and not for the good)

I will be in Bangkok (the name is so appropriate) in just under two months now, and I will post my (first time) findings and observations.

I read all of the above posts; some were baffling to me.  But in regard to your anticipated trip-- go with open mind and eyes and heart, and you'll no less return to your home base raring to go again.  During my last visit I noted some changes, especially in my being able to wander with ease and not worry about communicating.  This happened in Bangkok, Pattaya, and in Phuket, the latter being my first time there.

My first trip was in 1977; I was unaware of the sexual activities (which is/was all right), for I was in another place.  I could play w/o having to pay.  Back in the 80s or perhaps early 90s-- {...don't remember)--I ventured to Thailand again via a gay male tour.  While there I truly enjoyed the cultural and historical attributes and scenery.  ...dabbled a bit sexually and fell in love with the Thai culture and its people and cuisine.  ...returned again in, I think, 2005 or 2007.  ...had a superb tour; then once on my own did a little bit of sexual play!

Never once did I try to get anyone to lower his fee, for I knew that I had fun at a greater rate than I would have "forked out" if I'd been in Europe and/or the US.

Do try to take in what this country has to offer as well as "play."  Return home; bask in the afterglows, for I know you'll wanna return.

I am making my first ever trip to Bangkok in just over two months (Nov 8-16).

While Arizona is not a climatically cool place, please prepare yourself for the humid heat of Thailand.  This year has been a really hot one and it is not cooling down as it usually does at this time of year.  Not in Bangkok at least.  As Axiom said, you should still have a great time and want, very much, to return after this visit.

Unfortunately, the bars with dancing boys now charge an outrageous 3 to 5 dollars to take one of the boys out of the place.  To add insult to the injury they charge $3.50 to $4.00 for a beer.  There are no longer real sex shows and the shows they do have are silly & campy.  This is especially true of the bars in the Soi Twilight area.  Sadly, I cannot recommend any bars I used to go to because they are all like this.  More people now use Grindr, Hornet or another of the phone apps to meet guys who are available and there are many.  Planet Romeo is another place to find boys.

Good hunting!

3-5 dollars is considered outrageous?  $3.50-4 for a beer is terrible?  Drink before you go in or don't drink a beer...

I did go to a sex show that was interesting....to say the least...

Grindr was amazing for me for what I like since Im not into the twinks that are pretty much at all the bars except the one muscle bar...where they do a live sex show...

I guess money is relative based on what your annual income is or if you are retired...

I find BKK to be an amazingly cheap city for food, massages and entertainment...Boys included....

When I go back in December, it will be my third trip to BKK this year...one of the reasons I keep traveling back is how affordable it is...

I guess I missed the days when beers were 50 cents or a dollar and to take a boy out of the bars were free....

Perhaps I did bitch too much in the post opening this thread.  However, please understand where I'm coming from. I live here 365 days a year on a retiree's income.  My choice to move here was for primarily two reasons:  The place was not as expensive as the US and the sex is good.  In the 10+ years I've lived here the prices of most things have gone up considerably and this makes it harder to live on my income.  Of all of the rises in prices, the boy bars and the boys who work there are at the top of this list.  Going to massage places has become the best sex deals since the bars and their boys have become so expensive.

Most of those who post here are from Western countries and, of course, prices there are far above Thailand and most of Southeast Asia and the cost of an escort in much of the US is now around $300.  I would be completely out of that market  As the old saying goes: No mon, no fun.

So, yes, I do wish things were still as cheap as when I moved here.:(

I spend 6 months a year in Bangkok.  Yes, I have been priced out of escort scene in the US since I retired .  Twilight in Bangkok is still my first choice for places to hang out, and there prices have jumped.  But there are plenty of other places in Thailand  where prices are still very low. Your right about massage places being the best bargain.  Prices for everything go up, Thailand is no different. You can still enjoy an evening of fun for $30-$50.

You can get a great apartment in Bangkok for less than 1k per month but more likely around 800.  Food is cheap depending on what you want or if you cook yourself or want delivery.  Tonight I had an omelet with rice for 19 bath and very happy with it. Internet is about 20 USD per month.  Electricity is about 80 USD per month.  I'd say you could eat very well on 400-600 USD per month.  It all depends on your lifestyle and what you want to eat and how much you want to spend on boys and entertainment.  I have friends that easily live on 1500 USD per month.  I have friends that spend 4k USD per month.

Apartment would be biggest expense. I pay $1000 a month for my condo.  But it has everything and includes everything. ((Elec.wifi,cable,).  The location has to do with price. Can walk to public transportation around corner. Everything in a couple of blocks.

I have a good friend that lives just across the river and pays  about $500 for a modern condo.  He pays electricity.  It’s all a location thing. I’m home in bed before he gets home.    I just would rather pay more for convenience.

Everything else is probably close to half the price of the US.    Lots depends on your spending habits. You can still go out for a $100 dinner or you can still eat ok for $3.

My guess is that we would spend a couple of thousand dollars on lodging and  food. Then entertainment for two. Since I live in a winter tourist destination, i could rent my house out for what I need to spend in Bangkok, and pocket my income...for a  few months!
