Flights to Brazil (Rio or Belo)

Hello guys
I'm a British guy living in UK and love Brazil and all things Brazilian. I've visited Rio a few times in the last few years and been able to hook up with guys off this site.
I've also been able to meet up with a guy from Belo Horizonte, Guilherme, he's not an escort and things are a little serious now. We've been able to meet up a few times in Europe and Brazil.
I've looked at buying him a flight ticket to UK, but the prices seem expensive, so would appreciate if anyone with knowledge of this industry could help me out.
Usually I fly KLM from Manchester (UK) to Rio, they have frequent flight sales and price can come in at £500. However, if I book Rio to Manchester at about the same times, the price is coming in at nearly £1000. So, I can have two return trips to Rio for the cost of one return trip for Guilherme.
A few questions or if someone can share their knowledge:
- why if I want to buy return tickets (journey departing in Brazil) so much more expensive than return journey departing from UK? Do the airline companies have cookies or something offering me a higher price?
- what would the cost of booking the flights I want in Brazil be? how would locals in Brazil find cheap tickets?
- how can I buy the tickets I want from UK cheaply? (I know about the flight comparison sites but the prices still come back high)
Many thanks
Mikey

Mikey, the airlines have complex algorithims to determine pricing and it definitely is different if your starting point is the ending point for going the opposite way!  For example right now coach fare for me to bring guys from Rio or Sao Paulo to Mexico is around $700. US. But for me to fly there is $1,700. Or about twice what it was my last 1/2 dozen trips and its not high season!

I guessed something like this was happening. So for you buying two return trips and using the return flight on the first flight and first flight on the second trip to return home would be cheaper than the $1700 flight!

So have you any suggestions how my Brazilian friend can find decent priced flights to Europe? Walk-in travel agents, Brazilian websites, particular times of year to buy?

Although I'm happy to travel to Brazil, I want my friend to spend time in UK to become  an Anglophile ;-)

I'm also in UK and have Brazilian friends (one a travel agent in Brazil) in both London and Brazil.

I think everything you've stated is just the way it is.

It is more expensive for Brazilians to make a return trip to London than it is for Brits to make a return trip to Rio.

And booking any flights in Brazil (whether internal or international) is more expensive than booking exactly the same flights here in the UK.

I think my only advice would be for you to book Guilherme's flight from the UK, to book at least 8 weeks in advance, make sure the flight goes via Europe (rather than USA or Canada).

That said... I hope someone might have a better answer...

You and Guilherme can get married and live in the UK, so you won't have to spend any more fund on his airplane ticket.

Well that might happen... but he finishes medical school early next year so until then I'm stuck here and he is stuck there ;-)

Just one note of caution: I know a middle-aged Londoner who returned from a holiday in Brazil with a cute young twink of 23. The Londoner isn't rich but has a steady income. The young twink came from an ordinary background but there was little disposable income. After 18 months of living together, and a steady diet of sugary drinks and a much richer diet, the twink has ballooned in size and weight. The Londoner is no longer enamoured of him but can't get rid of him.

Thanks. The age gap isn't that great and he's eligible for Portuguese citizenship already

I know Brazil has manged to get international agreements preventing its nurses from being poached by, or going to work in western countries... I would imagine they've done the same with newly qualified doctors...

In regards to flights and cost-- have you tried obtaining tickets via discount brokers?  I've been using varying brokers for my travelers outside of the US for business and first class tickets.  Mileage has accrued as well.

Just google "discounted airfares" business or otherwise and see what happens.

Hope the both of you are truly, truly committed to each other, for I know a man who fell in love with a carioca; retired, moved to Rio and bought a condo.  His love joined him and used him to the hilt as well as playing around while the two traveled in Europe together one summer.  I AM NOT trying to put a dent in what you posted, but if the two of you really have a solid relationship and trust-- then proceed!

Why should the flight travel through Europe and not USA/Canada?

redxs, if you want to include US/Canada, bear in mind there MAY be a chance he will require a visa in the POSSIBLE event customs needs to be cleared prior to transfer connection.

Also, and maybe I am prying too much, but is he pre-residency? pre-fellowship? Needs to line up placement for such in your city? "Finishes medical school" is ambiguous, frankly. But you may already know the nuances.

He has US visa already. Also he studied for a year at Tufts University so has a good record with US immigration.

He's in the final year and his course includes an internship. To practice in UK he'd have to pass two further medical exams and an English test to obtain a licence to practice.

The key questions are-- Is he handsome, does he have a nice body?  nice dick and always horny like we always get from Brazilian GPs on our trip there.

Ah, bases covered. Tudo bom.

If I am not mistaken, as of May 17 entry to Canada for Brazilians can occur with possession of a US visa within the previous 10 years. However, an online eTravel Authorization is required ... in fact such an authorization requirement for Brits and others was initiated last Fall.

I have collaborated professionally on health care teams with a few MD Brazilian expats to Canada. Lovely people. I wish you and Guil much love and happiness, redxs.

Guilherme could sit the exams and English test... but he would then be up against the Department of Health and Department of International Development's list of countries that the NHS should not recruit from.  Brazil is included on that list.

The Brazilian government unveiled their "More Doctors" plan in 2013.  It highlighted how Brazil was about 15,000 doctors short (especially in the north of the country).  Their solution was to open up medical education by encouraging private universities to train doctors in addition to state universities.  This in turn, has led to a dropping of standards (mostly in those privately educated)... and perhaps unsurprisingly, a greater desire to work in the private sector once qualified...

We see loads of foreign doctors in NHS hospitals... but they tend to come from countries not included on the list (like poor European countries... certain states in India...)

That said, I guess nothing is insurmountable if you put enough time and effort into looking for loopholes or getting him European citizenship...

While Brazilian doctors eye US, Canada, and other locales for better opps and wages, some of them protest the recruitment of Cuban doctors to fill some of the gaps in Brazil. Cuban doctors are attracted by the better opps and wages in Brazil. While the UK may be sufficiently organized to impede MD immigration, I doubt that Brazil can do much to stem the exodus of their doctors. Canada has difficulty with retention due to Canadian doctors border-crossing for better opps and wages in US. Commonwealth doctors look to Canada for better opps and wages.

Maybe a Belo Horizonte -based doctor will successfully slip under the razor wire of this fuck-iasco.

Now I feel badly this deviated so much from the original flight cost inquiry.

If it were me, I would get a second or third job for now, pay the flight cost differential referenced here, and be as busy and burned out as the Brazilian will be, at least in the short term. Good for relationship sympatico. Generates more needed cash for flight costs.

Congrat.   Another "too good to be true", and we should all believe it.

Hi Redxs

I am thinking of visiting Brazil for the first time next year and I'm trying to get a feel for the prices. I'm flying from Dublin and the best prices I'm seeing for February (before carnival) also seem to be with KLM (via Amsterdam), but the prices I'm getting are around £650 - 700. £500 would be great. Could you tell me how long in advance you are booking and what time of year you are going? Or are there specific sale times you wait for?

Thanks,

J
