Where to stay in Bangkok?

My first trip is in March so I am looking at areas for Bangkok....I'm open to suggestions as far as hotel and locations that would be best for somebody visiting for the first time....

Impossible to recommend a place with out a bit more info.  Hotels in Bangkok are as reasonably priced as anywhere. It's a big city with good public transportation system.  So you need to figure what your going to be doing and if location is a major factor. 

All the major chains have many locations. You can run $75  - 150 for 4and 5 star hotels.  You can also find $40 very comfortable and clean hotels. Not much on amenities.  

I just arrived this morning. I'll be here for 3 months. I rent a condo. 1 bedroom is cheaper than hotel.  Not hard to find something great in this city as it's overwhelmed with hotels.

I was more interested in the location....I want to stay somewhere that is central to get around but not right in the middle of the noise and high traffic associated with a lot of tourists

But that's what Bangkok is...lots of noise, traffic and tourist.

If you want to stay near gay area, try Le Meridan or Crown Plaza. Both are near gay bars and easy to get to malls, etc in daytime.  The malls are fun.

If you want to stay a bit out, try one of the Holiday Inn or Marriott Executive Apartments out on Sukhumvit.  You will be a bit away from things but close to the BTS to get into city. 

However, on first trip, I'd say in Silom area just to be near all gay areas.  IMHO

Previous options are no doubt excellent quality.  If you wanted lower priced options:

Nantra Silom is well located & cheap.

Baan Silom Soi 3 -nicer hotel.

Do you pay the rent by the month?  How do you find such apartments?

I found the place I am in now thru Airbnb.  I spend about 6 months a year in Bangkok and have worked out a deal with the owner. I've used this Condo for 3 years now.
