Members Lucky Posted October 28, 2016 Members Posted October 28, 2016 FBI Director James Comey, once thought to be a pillar of integrity for standing up to Attorney General John Ashcroft, has sent a letter to Republicans in Congress revealing that he is now conducting additional investigation into the Hillary Clinton email matter. His speech to the public announcing the results of the earlier Clinton investigation were so inconsistent with the FBI's policies over decades, that to see him now releasing information that the public has no ability to evaluate just 11 days before the election is no doubt the most irresponsible act ever committed by an FBI Director. Take that, J. Edgar! Normally, the FBI never discusses their pending investigations, or comments when an investigation is closed without charges. Comey his violated both principles, clearly in an effort to benefit his fellow Republicans next month. The only thing more reprehensible was the Supreme Court's decision to intervene in an election with Bush. v. Gore. Quote
paulsf Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 He also sent the letter to 8 ranking Democrats in Congress. Quote
Members MsGuy Posted October 29, 2016 Members Posted October 29, 2016 And this is more partisan than providing political cover last summer for the AG to announce that there would be no prosecution for violating assorted Federal record keeping and secrecy laws, exactly how, Lucky? BigK 1 Quote
Members Lucky Posted October 29, 2016 Author Members Posted October 29, 2016 On both occasions, Comey was out of line. The FBI has a policy of not speaking of existing investigations or explaining why they didn't file charges. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/james-comey-fails-to-follow-justice-department-rules-yet-again/2016/10/29/3a2fad58-9ddd-11e6-b3c9-f662adaa0048_story.html?hpid=hp_no-name_opinion-card-d%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.601e8ce7b640 TotallyOz 1 Quote

Members MsGuy Posted October 30, 2016 Members Posted October 30, 2016 Lucky, I headed here to apologize as soon as I read this article. My bad. I had assumed that no head of the FBI would or could make the kind of public statements Comey made last summer except by direct order of the Attorney General. One would hope Obama fires this clown after the election, saving Clinton the awkwardness. Unless Trump wins. Then Obama should make whatever presidential finding of fact necessary to fly a hellfire missile through his office window. Lucky, numerito and AdamSmith 3 Quote

Members Lucky Posted October 30, 2016 Author Members Posted October 30, 2016 Comey has a ten year term. I doubt he can be fired. He could, however, resign after disgracing himself. MsGuy, OneFinger, TotallyOz and 1 other 4 Quote
TotallyOz Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 Are you sure he can't be fired? That is very odd IMHO. I personally don't know. But, I think he should resign. Lucky, OneFinger and MsGuy 3 Quote
Members boiworship Posted October 30, 2016 Members Posted October 30, 2016 He won't resign. Maybe he wants to be in Trumps's good graces, just in case the polls are wrong. Quote

TotallyOz Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Yes, and can be fired before he ruins the country more. IMHO Quote
AdamSmith Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 The way Comey can be terminated is to be found by a court to have violated the Hatch Act. A suit has been filed charging him with having done so. MsAnn 1 Quote

Members Lucky Posted November 1, 2016 Author Members Posted November 1, 2016 Wow! I made 2 mistakes in one thread. Comey did not stand up to John Ashcroft, he stood up to the guys who would act on Ashcroft's behalf while the Attorney General was hospitalized. He beat them to the hospital and informed Ashcroft of their shenanigans. And the President can fire the Director of the FBI. Bill Clinton did. Sorry for being so wrong. TotallyOz 1 Quote

Sorry, not by a court, but rather by the Office of Special Counsel that is now investigating the charge of violating the Hatch Act that Painter filed against Comey. Quote

If a finding comes down before the election that Comey did violate the Hatch Act, I think Obama -- post-election, of course -- will quite possibly do her the favor of firing himself (of course "only very reluctantly" etc etc ). numerito 1 Quote
